  • I'm shocked! You refer to members of The Clash as coming from west London. In fact, both Mick Jones and Paul Simonon are sarf London boys. Mick is from Streatham and Paul a good ol' Brixton boy - THAT is why he (not Strummer/Jones) wrote Guns of Brixton. Sorry to be so anal, but why should west London always get the kudos?
  • tony slattery lives up the road in stockwell. roger moore [yes, the one with the eyebrow] was born in stockwell. his dad was a local policeman. apparently, saffron from republica lives here too.
  • The Clash did not come from Brixton, it's just a song title. Strummer lived in N. London and the others Notting Hill/Shepherds Bush area.
  • Genius Comedy God Chris Morris lives here
  • Various of our current leaders have had spells serving on Lambeth Borough Council - John Major most famously also Ken Livingstone (Born in Streatham), Tony Banks, Paul Boateng
  • Bowie was born David Robert Hayward Jones at 40 Stansfield Road on January 8, 1947
  • As I speed by on Eurostar gazing out across the brixton rooftops it keeps going round and round in my mind that David Bowie is supposed to have been raised/born here.It really puzzles me how such a talented, one time effete and sensitive star could rise from a place like this.
  • Mixmaster Morriss Lives in Camberwell (next to Brixton)
  • The Clash!!! Remember "The guns of Brixton".
  • Chris Moyles
  • Skin from Skunk Anasie is from here. The Alabama 3 live here.
  • Probably the best costume designer in the movies, Sandy Powell, winner of 1999 Oscar for Best Costume Design - SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, lives in Brixton.

Buskers, Street Entertainers

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Brixton. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Brixton.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
