John Hume. Martin McGuinness. (dunno if they count though)
the undertones
janet donaghey who lived in beechwood avenue and read the news on ulster television. last heard of reading law at cambridge university. and now?
Bronagh Gallagher, that guy from D:REAM, Sheamus Heaney, Brian Friel, Annes Hot Chip Shop, Martin McGuiness, Mary Neilis, any one from Channel 9.
Famous ex-Derry residents include the sublime Peter Cunnah of D:ream fame,
Fergal Sharkey (The Undertones), Bronagh Gallagher (The Committments), Roma
Downey (A Woman Named Jackie and Touched By An Angel), Phil Coulter of course,
Martin Mc Guinness (Sinn fein), John Hume (Nobel peace prize and SDLP leader),
Seamus Heaney (Nobel Literature winner), Dana (!).
Bill Clinton claimed to be, but then what city in Ireland did he NOT claim as his? The area has its fair share of US history.
Nobel prize winning poet, Seamus Heaney, went to school there and wrote some poems about it. Playwright Brian Friel comes from Derry and some of his plays (eg Dancing at Lughnasa) are set nearby. The Undertones and Peter Cunnah from d:ream are probably the most famous musical exports, although it's also the home of Phil Coulter who gave the world "Puppet on a string", The Bay City Rollers and horrible irish musak. Derry also launched Dana (also a local) on her path to minor celebrity.

The Richmond Centre, new Millenium Theater Complex.
Between The Richmond Centre and Foyleside there are always pleasant, talented buskers.
Usually found hanging out under the arches of the city's infamous walls and in the city's craft Village, near the centre of town. They are also round Guildhall Square, not to be offiliated with the the drunks at the front who - at night - when relieving themselves try to compete with the fountain whilst singing a song. And no, I'm not refering to the local councillors... well, not this time anyway...
The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!
In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor
(the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.
We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!
If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.
If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.
