Food

  • Ah, there is a plethora of take-aways in Barry!
  • What happened to the bagetted place on Thompson ST
  • Quite a few chinkies, I seriously recomend you avoid chans at the bottom of st pauls avenue/high street - they are tight as bastards and you might find a few hairs and the like in the greasy undercooked chips. Chippie on park creasant is ok though. Indian opposite cinema is tasty.
  • The Bengal Lancer, Broad Street Parade - best Indian in South Wales. Also, the Chinese take-away on York Rd.
  • barry has many takeaway's and restaurants but i suppose the one that stands out in my mind would be forte's barry island
  • How can anyone write to this board without mentioning the Kwon Shan Chinese Takeaway in York Place (end of High Street). I've eaten Chinese food all over the UK and Pete's curry is undoubtedly the best. If you visit you must try the capital ribs too!!
  • Streets Brasserie in Broad Street..great food...and a brilliant atmosphere........but book early.....a week in advance at least
  • Great burgers at miss pennies man!!!! Believe me well worth a taste. The best in south wales with out a doubt. Treat yourself and let your taste buds have an orgasmic experience.
  • Chan's Take Away. A family run shop selling authentic Chinese food and Fish and Chips. A popular choice for all the family. Come down to Chan's at 123 High St Barry.
  • Mark's Fish & Chicken shop (!), Holton Rd. Best chippy in Barry. Get down to Barry Docks for a Saturday morning after fry-up like you've never had before. (Near the Sully road I think - can't remember)

Pubs

  • THE BEST PLACE TO DRINK IS ADMIRAL AS LONG AS YOUR WITH GOOD COMPANY.
  • The Park would be my local I suppose. The trouble is it's a far walk to be a local as I live on the Gibbonsdown side of town. The Admiral's alright on a Thursday, especially when the Kareoke's on.
  • The Dolfin a new pub with alate licence seems to be the place to be in Barry at the moment. It's next to the pleasure park over the island oppersite the former Majestic camp. Saturday night is the best night and if you get there before ten you get in for free, otherwise it costs you about a fiver! NO trainers aloud but skirts seem to be optional! On a Thursday night the Admaral in Vere street is quite a good place to be, at least it always used to be.
  • The Ship (very attractive to the FRESH FACED crowd), Horatios, The Cwm Ciddy...there are too many fab pubs to mention!
  • The Park Hotel serves a great pint of Brains. Go upstairs for a cosy evening. Also, the Marine on Barry Island - nice bunch of people.
  • not a drinker but maybe the ship hotel
  • Look above at the Borough Arms, High Street. Good ale and friendly atmosphere.
  • Cwm Talwg taking over where the Park left off....now has the Old Record Club on Fridays....check it out
  • The Ship Inn is the best in Barry. Daryll the bouncer is a really nice guy he won't trouble you if you behave yourself. They serve a great Snakebite and black and it is a great place to get wasted, I should know!!! Great beer garden to have a smoke in (if you know what I mean). Horatio's is also a good pub which also has a beer garden, but stay away from the pool table and the dodgy looking geezer's at the back, if you won,t to go home as you arrived (in one piece).
  • Bindles is on the sea front at the old harbour
  • Als bar - No, don't go in there man, don't sacrifice yourself.
  • Ship - Quieter, more mature version of Horatios. Bottom of Ship Hill, last pub before Barry Island.
  • Horatios - Recently renovated. Very busy, loud music, close to central area of town. Kind of a party atmosphere. Pub licencing, except for on special occasions.
  • High Street. - loads of pubs down there but I can't remember their names. Meet the Black Prince of Wales in THE BASSETT.
  • The Friars - The only late licence in Barry (I think), with Buster Blood Vessel doing the doors. Opens till 1 on weekends. Plays no dance music, got pictures of Bowie on the wall. Get pissed first.
  • Quids In - Supposed to be good (opened after I left).
  • The Windsor (or, 'the Zoo') - Not a popular tourist attraction.
  • The Royal, The Admiral - In Cadoxton, dodgy and alright depending on who you are with probably.
  • The College Inn (I think) - Top of Barry Road - Just been done out when I went there last. Not bad.
  • The Colcot Arms - Far end of Colcot Road - only been in once, full of old grippers playing cards.
Recently refurbished, very nice inside, family pub, large playground, good food. On Colcot Road just before main round about with port road
  • The Park - Half way down Park Crescent; packed with slappers on a Sunday night.Three bars.
  • The Witchell - Bottom of Barry Road; good laugh sometimes. The Cwm Ciddy- On your left on the way to Cardiff Airport. This is an alright pub, pretty quiet. Karaoke on some nights.
It's quiet and pleasant. It has an eaterie and a seperate lounge bar. Quiz nights etc...

Cafes and Coffee Shops

  • lynns kitchen vere street, best cafe in barry, they do a wicked egg and chips, expect to get a cip round the ear if your chopsy to anyone working there
  • THE BEST PLACE TO EAT IN BARRY IS ROSE'S SIZZLING PAN BARRY ISLAND, OPPOSITE THE MARINE HOTEL. BRILL GRUB, FRIENDLY SERVICE, AND YOUR SURE TO END UP THE BEST OF FRIENDS WITH ROSIE. (HER DAUGHTER IS A LOOKER TOO!!!) ITS NEAR TO THE BEACH AND A NICE PLACE TO STOP OFF IF YOU HAVE GOT THE MUNCHIES! THE FOOD IS FRESH AND YOU CAN TAKE AWAY IF YOU ARE IN A RUSH.
  • Go to the Knap. A slightly better class of clientle.
  • The Bridge cafe serves up a great greasy spoon, if you can get a seat anmongst the RAF and council workers.
  • A few greasy spoon cafes in barry dock, expect botulism poisoning though.
  • terry's cafe holton road a old family cafe good food

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Barry. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Barry.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
