The Stuff We Can't Fit In Somewhere Else
Now that John Smith is our MP I'd like to say how much I enjoy watching him distance himself from the Labour Party locally. Also of interest is the way he accuses everyone else of "talking Barry down" and then bleats about the need for objective one funding whilst being photo'ed by piles of rubbish and run down public spaces.
The boy who wrote about Barry Boys was right. Though I admire his sincerety, one only has to look at the spelling and grammar to know that he speaks truthfully. The Welsh medium schools have the edge, which is why I take my daughter every day to the other side of Barry and back. If I were rich she would attend a school outside of Barry. (If I were rich I wouldn't live in Barry.)
The worst thing about Barry is everyone elses attitude to it.
Come to Barry, Come to Barry! It's a wicked place to grow up and it's really improving at the moment!
When I do come to Barry to do my shopping, you cannot walk on the pavements due to the dogs mess, litter, chewing gum, in fact Barry is the dirtiest shit hole there ever was. The Council do fuck about cleaning up the mess. All the men do is drink tea and smoke in cafes.
I would like state one thing about the police in Barry They abuse their power, it may have lowered the
crime rate but still does not justify using violence
against inosent public persons.
Barry is not a hell hole and by all means visit our
town.
Dont expect the "pigs" to be civil to you if you look
under the age of 30, or are sat/stood outside a pub enjoying a "beverage" in the sun.!
Altogether, the town is in such a good position geographically. You've got the sea, the beautiful Vale of Glamorgan, and Cardiff all on your doorstep. The place just seems to have gone downhill so much since the 80s when I was growing up in the town. It saddens me to see the state of Holton Road on the rare occasions when I come back to Barry.
Barry Docks lifeboat is a rather unappreciated plus to the town. At the time of writing there are about 20 dedicated men (and 1 woman) who regulary risk their lives to save others. On call 24hours a day, 365 days a year, the crew often get called out for jetskiers, yachts, and those still silly enough to venture out on rubber rings etc! The only "shouts" the crew regret responding to are the hoax calls that they so often get. When you consider that the average cost to launch the Aran class boat we have at Barry is five thousand pounds, it is not suprising that these hoax callers have earnt themselves a bad name! The Barry Dock Lifeboat covers the area from Porthcawl up to the Severn bridges, and all the crew are volunteers. To reach the lifeboat station, head towards the Marine pub or the Triangle shopping area on Barry Island and follow the road downhill untill it reaches an end.
do not go for a good beer up if you are english , you will get your head kicked in trust me i am welsh and had the misfortune of taking an english mate for a bevvie in barry - wrong
I'm from Barry, and I now live in Brooklyn, New York City. I can honestly say that where I live now is by far more comfortable, safer, more secure than Barry ever was. However, I do miss home...I don't know about the drop in crime but try standing opposite the Bassett for more than 20 minutes one Friday, $20 says you don't make it out alive...
Avoid Barry Job Club by volunteering for a two-day-a-week stint at Barry C A B, Oxfam, etc. Then you will be instructed by the local DSS to attend the Job Shop Extra. Hardly anyone comes here and it's got loads of new WPs and staff. Far better, quieter and easier to find a seat. Job Shop Extra - Why not?
In The Pink Beauty Salon, High Street. All aspects of Beauty Therapy.
Good jumping off point to the Vale of Glamorgan - lots of nice pubs.
History. Loads here. Once boasted the busiest sea port in the whole world! (Coal exports during the turn of the century.) Home of the steam locomotive graveyard from whence most of to-days preserved locos came.
The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!
In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor
(the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.
We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!
If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide.
