Nottingham, Nottinghamshire Triumphs and Tragedies

* Important Note: all entries in the Knowhere Guide are the opinions of its users. see What is Knowhere for more info about the Guide.

Favourite Building

  • The building on the corner of Long Row and King Street.
  • ROCK CITY
  • The buildings up Queen Street are architecturally rather nice.
  • the whole of the shops in hockley
  • The dept of maxifacial surgery and breast screening on the Ropewalk (the former Out-patients dept of the General Hospital) which was the first hospital building in Nottingham to have a lift. (It's not exciting but made a lot of nurses happy)And the Rotunda which was the Jubilee ward of the General Hospital.
  • Has to be Rock City seeing as I seem to spend half my life there
  • The Falcon Alfreton road, Good food and beer , what more do you want?
  • the adams building on stoney street newly renovated into a college is absolutely stunning was a factory in the 17c now restored. wow!
  • The orange tower at the corner of king street and market square, above the news agents -I drew it for an art project.
  • C&A, DEFINATELY-HAHA
  • cop shop (?) nah 4 reel, Non-stop, small and nise!
  • Wollaton Hall-Just cos its big and old and I can say I live by there when they show it on the cricket
  • Clarendon college Adams building.
  • Watson Fothergill architecture, notably NatWest Bank Thurland Street, Express Buildings Parliament Street. NatWest modlled on Alfred Waterhouse Manchester Town Hall.
  • Council House, Castle, The whole of the Lace Market
  • Nottingham University Portland Building. Good for views from there too. The new Inland Revenue buildings are fine examples of modern architecture, although much malined.
  • New uni library - it's unbelievable inside
  • Newton Building, Nottingham Trent university - looks like something JFK was shot out of
  • the rotunda near the castle, used to be part of city hospital (i think) now a bar.

Demolish It Now Building

  • The Gresham Hotel
  • the cricket players pub next to the ice centre and 'the company inn at castle wharf
  • The Broadmarsh Shopping Centre.
  • The ugly sixties building which currently houses Littlewoods - such a monstrosity should not be allowed to cloud the perfection of the Long Row/King Street building.
  • ALL NIGHT CLUBS THAT DON`T DO ROCK
  • Broadmarsh and Vic Centre.
  • New look buildings of the world
  • The car park on Queens Bridge road, ugly even for 1970s carpark art.
  • Victoria Centre, enormous concrete horror, kill it now...Oh and the new Ice Stadium, it's in the wrong place I keep telling you.
  • the old evening post building has been
  • The Palais and Ocean because they are all full of tossers
  • the becket school...need i say more
  • The new Ice Stadium, YOU'RE BUILDING IT IN THE WRONG PLACE!!!!!! I dont care what you say people will still use their car and park as close as possible. Park and ride schemes, MY ARSE!!!!!
  • broadmarsh centre esp. the dodgy bus station bit. 60's arcutecture at it's worst!
  • Pearl Assurance building! We hate hexagonal windows.
  • VOID AND BROAD MARSH
  • cop shop, not joking this time!
  • Isis - Because its full of trendy tossers
  • My school- Rushcliffe comprehensive
  • Nottingham Evening Post - to make way for the new multiplex cinema.
  • Broadmarsh Centre facade, especially the Arndale centre car park. Blaargh. Looks like Leicester.
  • Town Hall (Market Square)
  • The old Evening Post Building opposite the Concert Hall. It's cold and unfriendly looking and that new bit they added on looks like a new bit added on.
  • Nottingham 'castle' - not a real castle, but a stately home. Visitors are very disappointed by this building.
  • Newton, cos you can see it from all over the place and it winds me up. Failing that, every house in the Meadows - they're damp, cold and generally the worst place in the world to live.
  • The house I'm renting next year. No seriously, Lloyd's monstrosity in the Market Square.

The Best Things

  • If you can fight your way through the rivers of piss and past the drunken slappers who want to maul every man in sight, Saturday night in Nottingham is perhaps better than anything Leicester or Derby has to offer.
  • Relaxed and friendly social environment.
  • Nottingham is cool and thriving. Great for shopping, drinking and clubbing. Beggars are generally rather friendly.
  • the lads! oh the cute skater boys!
  • The girls, oh the girls.....
  • The atmosphere!!!I've lived in lots of different places in my time but no where touches Notts.Top pubs, top clubs (anyone remember Rock Citys 50p a pint offer in the early nineties-i kid you not)The square-the left lion on a weekend was a more exciting place than most cities top club.Only thing is when i go back there all the old faces have gone.Apart from that bloody preacher arsehole who regularly used to get a twatting off offended muslims.
  • Its now becoming over run with 'alternative' (ie skaters, bmxers etc) people so the trendies will soon be outnumbered! It makes a nice change!
  • The nightlife
  • THE PUBS, THE GIRLS, ROCK CITY, AIRBORNE(Classic rock covers band)
  • DiY are still doing their thing.
  • nottinghams compact city centre and room for everyone
  • nearness of everything, stupid crusties on ketamin trying to stand up and then falling into the road...he heh
  • TOA + ROCK CITY

  • Doctor Love and the Disco Divas, great band.
  • Forest Women Rock City The 35 bus
  • Rock city on student night-rudies reckon is Grebby! Summer in town watching my friends skate Definately my house in Lady Bay West Bridgford.
  • Very vibrant at night. So many people about in the square on Saturday night. Plenty of old buildings still.
  • Caves - there are loads, under pubs, shops and houses. You can visit them at the Broad Marsh shopping centre, Nottingham Castle and arrange to visit more unknown sites via the Civic Society or Nottingham Historical and Archaeological Society.
  • Range of bars and atmosphere
  • A band called Atomic Kandy. Best thing to come out of Nottingham in a long time. All girl band, original material, leather clad..excellent singer!
  • It's central in UK. The night life is excellent - something for everyone. Good local government - local needs met very well. Two good footy teams.
  • Pubs, friendly people, decent drink prices, compact size (you can have an ace pub crawl taking in about 15 pubs, and never have to be outside for more than 2 minutes, tops, between pubs). Women. Clothes shops.
  • No-one minds an Irish accent.

The Worst Things

  • The Gresham Hotel
  • Saturday night in the Old Market Square is plain depressing - drunk lads singing and shouting obscenities whilst relieving themselves against any solid object they can find. Women running around in the middle of winter in skimpy dresses and no tights - please, ladies, use fake tan it's been around for years for Godsake!
  • Yates & Squares
  • Hangovers every day of the week. One of the beggars is a complete arse and is totally ungrateful. Needs avoiding at all costs.
  • People mug you if you go on your own...thats from experience.
  • The new WB cinema which is totally disorganised and impossible to find your way around.
  • Nottingham is grim on the whole, it's smaller than you'd think, but it's good points are really good, so look out for them, i mean try and find some er sorry what were they again?
  • Nottingham City council
  • Hey fuckin' prick, why then do you wear your sweaty sag-bags in the heat of the summer, ye fuckin' prick?
  • Trendy bimbos that hardly wear any clothes in the winter!(whats wrong with wearing a nice warm hoody!) The same bloody pig who keeps stopping me boarding!
  • the dirty old men which can be found in broadmarsh bus station after 10pm the bad tempered bouncers on the door at cucamaras cocktail bar
  • the beggers, one on every corner!!
  • Radio Trent, Dumb Sculptures dotted all round the place that taxpayers money has been frittered away on.
  • Clamping guy on postern gate
  • the massive gangs of townies on friday & saturday stamping on pidgeons
  • Maidmarian way cutting straight through Nottingham, horrid, busy and UGLY.
  • the rude boyz in the square who reckon they are actually quite hard, when they are all a bunch of Puffs! nuff said!
  • County Trendies bloody stupid taxi drivers who don't know wher bramcote lane is
  • Bloody Rudies shouting 'Greb!' at skaters Big rudies nicking skateboards Tramps in Square Libery's-slaggy pub No 10 -slaggy pub Fountain-slaggy pub Palais-slaggy nightclub MGM-slaggy nightclub
  • gangsta kids thinking they are real cool
  • Broadmarsh Centre!!!
  • The litter. Nottingham John ( only joking!)
  • Pigeons. Loads of them. Cab drivers - they queue up all day, but at 3am when you really want one you can't stop them for love nor money...
  • No-one understands an Irish accent.

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Nottingham. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Nottingham.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
