The Stuff We Can't Fit In Somewhere Else

  • Luton is great. I've left and come back more times than I care to remember and the same deadbeats are still hanging around the Arndale Centre... ahh sweet if you're having a bad day at work go and take a peek to remind yourself of the alternative.
  • dogs shit theres to much in bury park as it is
  • Luton is generally thought of as a very urban place, but that's overlooking loads of green spaces. You can walk from Dallow Road to the South coast, crossing very few roads. Stockwood park, Peoples park, Wardown Park, Sundon Hills, Blows Downs, Farley Hill (great for joyriders looking for a place to burn out cars), Marsh Farm, Bramingham woods, Bluebell woods, Foxdell, and only a 20 minute drive from Luton, Ashridge, Stockgrove and Dunstable Downs (low flying gliders).
  • that luton holds two fascinating "records" - the longest skid mark in the world (look it up in the guiness book of world records) and that the only roman - era pet monkey was found there - surely it could be a top tourist site on that fact alone?
  • Luton Town Hall was built in 1936
  • Anyone know where the occasional clubber can obtain her party prescriptions?
  • spend a day sightseeing all the weirdo's that hang out in the Arndale, but leave before you start turning into one yourself.
  • Hey! Take that nasty bit off about Hockwell Ring! One bad experience or street doesn't reflect the whole area!
  • Keep to the town centre and you're more likely to get turned over in nearby smart Harpenden - well, the rich kids have got more in their pockets, haven't they?
  • You are correct, Mick Abrahams (also of Blodwyn Pig) used to drink in the "GreyHound" in Dunstable. Yeah and Luton was tremendous place in the 60s and 70s..and it was safe to walk home in the dark through Wardown Park or even walk down Moor Path in the pitch black
  • Luton's really not a bad place, yeah it has it's scummy bits but where doesn't? The pubs are getting better all the time. There are more restaurants opening every month, they've even tried their best with the Arndale. If you think it's bad try living in Stevenage. If you think it has no soul or town feeling then try Milton Keynes. Bury Park is great for buying strange but interesting food.
  • Luton was a tremendous place in the late 60's early 70's...what happenned?
  • Luton has a town Hall built in 1920-24. The previous Town Hall was burnt day during a riot on Peace Day 1919.
  • Last year, the Bollywood film festival was held there, with many stars coming over from India. They also held the World Carrom championships there. Luton Carnival, on the Bank holiday weekend at the end of May, is the biggest one day carnival in the UK and is organised by the people that do Notting Hill.
  • Living there for twenty six years.
  • Luton is the un-crowned Mecca for Martial Arts. Its not very well publised, but in Luton there is a British, European and World Champion in nearly every kind of Martial Art there is, for instance Willie Thomas (Karate); John Harvey and Pat O'Malley (Escrima); Victor Evelyn (Wing Chun kung fu) - Owner of the Warriors Workshop, dealing in Martial Arts Equipment); Dave Short (Judo) and scores of others in other arts.
  • Brook Street is the mini 'red light district', hence the jokes 'you work at Brook Street' (employment agency) blah blah.
  • It was with a little sadness and and lot of pleasure I was able to find a web site that dealt exclusively with Luton. I grew up in Luton and attended Lealands high school graduating in 1972, I fled it's green pastures for the u.s.a. in 1978 but miss it a great deal. I could go on about the great Luton of the past but the one thing that comes to mind is that Luton was the first team to be involved in a one hundred thousand pound transfer, when Bruce Rioch was sold to Aston Villa. One more thing that comes to mind, in the early seventies a book was published called "the story of Luton" if anyone should know of a place I could buy a copy I would appreciate hearing (mystic@ccnn.net).
  • Trivia---Luton has the longest foot bridge between two railway stations. "In the world."
  • And finally, Stockwood Park Rugby Football Club is a top place and an excellent venue to get drunk.
  • Luton Hoo, large stately home, was the venue for filming a lot of "Four Weddings and a Funeral". It is also next to a large sewage treatment plant.
  • Eamon Andrews lived in a very big house in Luton, in a road where driving instructors take all there first time pupils because it's easy to do three point turn there.
  • Bob Monkhouse lives just outside of Luton, which leads me to conclude he's been shopping there a couple of times.
  • David Arnold, the guy who did "Play Dead" with Bjork, is from Luton.
  • Not only does Paul Young come from Luton, but so do many other famous people, such as the main character from childrens tv program of the 80's "Dodger, Bonzo and the rest"
  • Luton has a rugby club with some of the best facilities and playing services that can be found in the country. Visit Luton RUFC in Newlands Road and be sure of a warm welcome. All ages catered from minis to veterans.
  • Nick Owen supports Luton Town (but Anne Diamond doesn't).
  • Mick Harford owns a nightclub there.
  • Paul Young was born in Luton.
  • The town has a high immigrant population, mainly from the Kashmir area of Pakistan. Many of the indigenous locals do not like them.
  • Luton is best known for its airport which featured in a number of commercials in the 1980s with Loraine Chase.
  • Luton suffers from a poor image!

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Luton. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Luton.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
