Best and Worst in Derby, Derbyshire*

Derby, Derbyshire Triumphs and Tragedies

* Important Note: all entries in the Knowhere Guide are the opinions of its users. see What is Knowhere for more info about the Guide.

Favourite Building

  • zanzibar
  • st werburgs church
  • The Dolphin in Irongate, also St.Mary's church which was designed by Pugin. this was the first church designed by him at the early age of 25 years.
  • WATERFALL IN WINTER IT FREEZES NEAR BY A SIT AND WATCH AS PEOPLE FALL OVER /WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY

Demolish It Now Building

  • Littleover Community School (but leave the good skate spots)
  • BOOM NIGHTCLUB!!!!!
  • The old Police Station in Full Street (1960's extension) It hasn't had the windows cleaned since it was built.
  • THE WATER FALL IN THE MARKET PLACE-WHAT IS THAT ALL ABOUT!
  • THE BUS STATION!
  • The Pink Coconut (with everyone inside preferably)
  • NOTTS FOREST GROUND HA HA
  • The Assembly Rooms facade is truly awful.

The Best Things

  • pubs are far as the eye can see
  • The river, and chilling in the parks in the summer, Derby is great for getting to other places too, handy for motorways, trains, planes, crap for boats
  • The best thing right now has to be a Friday night combination of The Bless and then the Bluenote...never been anywhere that can beat the vibe...ALWAYS a good night. Make mine a JD & C and I will see you there!
  • The skaters, offers in pubs, the men in the derby evening telegraph wheelie things (derrrrbybyyybybyby evnionbufeg telebfebhggraphrofhh), shops when u have money and peak performance.
  • The people and and the bloke from Marmaris (kebab shop opposite the future (formerly the Rockhouse)). Nice Kebabs.
  • Derby is a well off city, with high employment and this allows the streets to feel safe in the City Centre at weekends (cause, effect etc.). Also, it may not be the best looking city, but you get attached and that's it!
  • Sadlergate. I've been all over the world, but this takes some beating for a pubs/drinking/good time type of place, and all on one street.
  • beer
  • Great people. Lovely city centre. Interesting walks and many many parks and river walks.
  • FRIENDLY, NIGHT S OUT

The Worst Things

  • the kamikaze grandmothers who insist in walkin straight towards u, and the family's with about 7 kids who walk as slow as they can.
  • The university (heard a rumour they're about to go bankrupt - hope so)
  • The council, no vision, no plans, too much money to spend on daft things
  • East Midlands Airport - have you ever been there? The waiting lounge seems to be hap hazardly littered with pillars, posts, and columns. It's extrodinary, I can imagine the response to the architects original designs - It's good....but can we have more posts.
  • shops when u have no money, boom nightclub, the big issue and limeys prices.
  • Everything. Derby is the worst place I have ever been unfortunate enough to end up in. I have lived here for two years now and seriously could not tell you one good thing about the place.
  • there's poo all over the pavements
  • The people in Union One
  • The "city" of Derby is a very confused little town with little to do or see (apart from on Sunday)!!
  • BREEDING GROUND FOR IMORALTY IN PROFESSIONAL PERSONS WHO DO NOT VALUE FAMILY LIFE, THEY ARE SELF CENTERED
  • Definitely the 1960's planners who demolished the ancient St. Alkmunds area of the city centre for an ugly road. man!
  • The University of Derby. As an ex student I would not recommend anyone to go there. I had three years of hating the place, but then again you may like the idea of lectures clashing and a severe lack of organisation. The social life was o.k though and I suppose that's the important bit.
  • the club scene--only dance orientated
  • may 98, a new bar has opened on the square "jackie Stamps" or summat and it is just horrible. don't go there!!!!

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Derby. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Derby.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
