The Stuff We Can't Fit In Somewhere Else

  • dont you think that the men in the derby evening telegraph wheelie things are great? they all look the same, all are dirty and bald and they all can speak (or shout) properly. bless em. oh! and at the end of the day, they wheel the booth things home and plan there speech for tomorrow.
  • Derby & Nottingham Music Hall Association. Founded in 1979. Now over 100 members, in UK. Research and archive Music Hall & Variety. 8 meetings per year at Derby & Sutton in Ashfield. Connections with British Music Hall Association and Grand Order of Water Rats.
  • If you like electronic/ambient music (or just a change) try out Radio Derby on Sunday afternoon, between 3 and 6. Programme's called Soundscapes and is presented by Ashley Franklin (who is also RD's film critic).
  • tattoo shops-- sparkys - normanton abacus - london rd. and now in town tattoo sensations - chaddesden
  • Derby is a great little city with everything that one would expect in a much larger city. Historically it is very interesting, dating back to Roman times , but at the present, there are many great pubs, restaurents and the people are very friendly.
  • Why bother when Nottingham, Leicester, Sheffield, Birmingham aint that far away!
  • Derby is home to one of the best roller skating populations in the country. Rollerworld is a Derby landmark in its own right, and is home to Derby Rollerspeed, the best speed skating team in the country.
  • Remember Derby's famous games software house, Core Design. I know, I work there.
  • I was a student at Derby College of Art 20 years ago. I took great umbrage at the fact that I had inadvertently landed just about as far as I could get from any shore in an island kingdom. Is the Dolphin still thriving?
  • And book shops: Waterstones in St.Peters St. W H Smiths in Eagle Centre and Cluloes in Irongate.
  • The Derby cinemas are Showcase in Forresters Leisure Park, UCI in Meteor Centre and Metro Cinema in Green Lane.
  • Derby is cool. From the middle of town you walk to the river and jump off big bridges, and that can only be good. We also seem to attract a lot of fashion victims, so avoid the sitting on the benches crew. They all mean well though.
If you ever come to Derby then look for Lindsay who works in Wayahead, he will definitely help you out an make sure you have a good time. [Update:] Lyndsey ain't there anymore but is in Birmingham (supposedly studying!?!) - top lad tho :) And if you come in the summer then look out for Evergreen Central which will be a open access computer facility run by myself, Saul, and a good friend of mine. A bit like an Internet cafe but with no cafe and very little Internet.
What else can I say? Derby is about as laid back as it gets and everyone I know there is super nice. Not much serious skating though; if that's your poison then head up North to Sheffield.
Come and have a laugh but do not expect the highest standard of skateboarding, nobody from Derby will ever be a professional (no love lost there).
  • Having the main skate spot (the Assembly Rooms) next to the Police headquarters.
  • The place is rife with train-spotters!
  • A very dodgy football team.
  • Very expensive public transport. A very silly local accent :-) I mean 'eh up mi duck' is very very silly!!! (and I'm from Derby!!)
  • There is nowt else good in Derby. But then, I'm a Nottingham lad. - Paul
  • Worst Thing:
    • Go to the new football stadium - whether you like football or not, it's really impressive.
    • Absolutely massive kebabs in Naan bread, at fairly cheap prices.
    • Skating when Ben Marley or Ollie Bradly are about, those doods are way rad man! And that just goes to show that professional standard skaters can come from Derby!!!
    • A City centre 'Ghost Walk' is available which takes in several haunted pubs and other buildings (more details available soon...).
    • A good selection of restaurants of all types.
    • Derby's basketball team are good this year - by the way they are called 'The Derby Storm' now.
    • The Derby Playhouse is an excellent theatre.
    • Good Public transport.
    • Good night life in City centre, plenty of good pubs of all types.
    • Can't think of much more and I live there.:)
    • Home of Rolls-Royce aero-engines.
    • Derby County FC, Derby basketball team.
    • Keith's toy stall, Eagle Centre market - sells a top range of 2nd hand toys, including many Star Wars figures.
    • Best hang out spot, cool place etc.: Evergreen Central (summer 96)

    What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

    Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Derby. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Derby.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
