The Stuff We Can't Fit In Somewhere Else

  • Felixstowe the place that everyone talks about but never admits to going to, a quiet resort for the elderly and infirm, I've lived here for 19 years and can honestly say it'as a place you can still leave your back door open in. You might get a visitor, if you're lucky. Its quiet and peaceful what more could I ask for? It hasn't alot, but whatit has is enough, anymore and it wouldn't be good old Felixstowe! PS. My lad likes the clubs and pubs!
  • Felixstowe began to go downhill when local council disappeared. Whichever body has been responsible for making decisions about direction the town takes over last 25 years has a lot to answer for. Building permissions, types of businesses attracted to the town, amount of money from docks taxes that gets plowed back into the place etc all need to be reflected upon. But let's not look back. The town has enormous potential and the part between Bent Hill and Cobbold Point still has it's charm. Rejuvination is required together with the right level of investment. Start by getting a multi-national hotel chain to build a five-star hotel near the beach, develop water sports, make Spa Pavilion into a top notch entertainment centre and then go from there.
  • Excellent library, good selection of books, and computers for internet connection ,,,,,all free.
  • In connection with the "Timed Run" to Martlesham, the 2min 56 sec time is out of the window. The new time is 2 min 27 sec (car) and 1 in 28 sec (motorbike)!!!

  • Favourite place for sex: Lovers Hump in Langer Park, Under the Pier, In a beach hut, Languard common, cinema, coronation park (in the bushes), on the beach.
  • Although most of the descriptions are fairly accurate, I can't say that I agree with the overall sentiment expressed about Felixstowe. I lived there for seven years (Cavendish Road). My local was the Felsto Arms. The favorite time of the year for my family was the winter. All of the daytrippers were gone and we'd have the beach, or should I say shingle, to ourselves. I have fond memories of my children bundled up for an arctic expedition throwing stones into the sea. My Mother-in-law and brother-in-law still live there running thier own business. Coco's is a dive, on that score you're correct. I only went there when the pubs shut and I didn't have any better sense (usually due to high alcohol intake). Felixstowe can be a wonderful place to raise a family. There's nothing like having five pubs within five minutes walk of your house. We now live in Ft. Worth, Texas were I have to put up with insufferable heat and humidity in the summer and having a concealed handgun is legal. If I win the lottery, we are buying the Martello Tower and moving back!
  • May I suggest the below link for Felixstowe please.
  • COUNTDOWN - an exciting project for the millenuim in Felixstowe Involving all local Infant, Primary & Junoir Schools, the project will produce a CD, CD-ROM, cassette, video and concets at the Spa pavillion The project is being run by people from local churches For more information, visit the site at http://www.btinternet.com/~rayners/countdown/
  • Some of the comments made by certain idiots are completely unfair- if the shopping is as bad as some people say, why do a hell of a lot of Ipswich people do their shopping in Felixstowe?
It is one of the sunniest resorts in the UK and has one of the lowest rainfall figures - it faces south and has most of the amenities that go with a small seaside resort.
The seafront is clean and the gardens are,in the main, kept in good order(not so good since Suffolk Coastal took over from Felixstowe UDC-they reside in palatial offices in the village of Woodbridge and are far too distant to be that interested in our fine town probably one of the most important in the UK)
As for the person who thinks very little of the town except that the Grove is useful for sexual pursuits - he wants to think himself bloody lucky- not many larger towns afford such comfortable amenities for such pursuits.
We have a huge quantity of food and food takeaway shops on the seafront - probably too many but we also have something of a rare breed - A Stamp Shop - on the seafront right opposite the Pier (Philately that is) - there are very few of those around these days.
I don't live in Felixstowe (3 miles away) but I think it is the next thing to the Garden of Eden - If there ever was such a place!
  • I quite agree with the comments about Felixstowe, which I usually describe to people (the lucky ones, who haven't been there) as the "Arm-pit of Suffolk". I consider Suffolk to be one of the most beautiful places in Britain, and being born in Felixstowe, I suppose I'm biased. Its a shame that Felixstowe can't be towed out into the North Sea and scuttled! Mercifully, I haven't lived there since 1974, and my last visit was in 1991 (for old-times'-sake!)
  • The Grove was mentioned as a great shagging location. Well, something is amiss here since underneath the Pier arcade was not included in descriptions of places to bonk. Many of us played 'hide the sausage' there.
  • I hope the following suggestion is not considered to silly, but my family and friends have a little challenge. The backroad between Martlesham, through Brightwell, past Bucklesham, and onto the A14 (nee A45) near the Levington turn off, is great for timed runs - NOT races, but against the clock. We would like to hear of peoples times for this.. a 2 minutes 56 seconds is beatable, but then my car is only a 1 litre and so if a mountain cyclist can't beat that then I am most puzzled.
  • I totally agree that Charlie Mannings is the DB's - many a 10p has disappeared in there. Tesco's is a top establishment (I worked there for two years so I should know). I agree with what everyone else says about it being a dump, but recent visits (I now live in London) have made me feel rather nostalgic about the old place. Hence I'm a sad bastard.
  • The Grove, the little wood, is great for shagging in. As was the now demolished barn at Felixstowe Ferry along the flood wall.
Felixstowe happens to be the largest container port in the uk, and second only to Rotterdam in Europe, thus making it one of the largest in the world.
Charlie Mannings entertainments... The dog's bollocks.
The huge amounts of shell suits and Shazzers... Most distressing!
The Cavendish Community Church next to Safeways is excellent.
Felixstowe's Coolege Girls School will be sadly missed.
Nothing much else to say, which kind of sums up the place doesn't it?!
  • There's not much in Felixstowe - even the convent is for OAP nuns. Need I say more? The highlight of a Saturday are the jumble sales in St. Andrews Church Hall.
  • Indeed, the Solar car park is the high spot of Felixstowe. The only other WWW reference to Felixstowe is in the Texas Homecare list of shops. Texas Homecare is also situated in the Solar car park in Felixstowe. It has a pier, a dock and lots of old people some of whom live there and lots who just pop down for the day (generally Tuesdays and Thursdays). DON'T GO THERE. IT SUCKS!
  • Felixstowe isn't a bad place to live but you always get the feeling that anywhere else would be better. The beach doesn't have huge amounts of sand, but at least we've got ice-creams. The High Street isn't as dull as in some towns but if you want to buy anything decent you have to go to Ipswich. The cinema is cheap and has two screens but the films take a while to get here, i.e. two months after the rest of England's already seen it!! And the football team's not much to write home about either.

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Felixstowe. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Felixstowe.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
