Record Shops

  • Ipswich Record And Tape Exchange is the best shop in East Anglia for cheap second hand records and quality vinyl rarities!Cheap dvd's and they still sell tapes and even 78's. Rex records is no more.
  • rex records rip hmv
  • hmv and virgin
  • Does Red Eye Records still exist? If not, there's a little place almost opposite what used to be (or still is) The Falcon.
  • virgin much cheeper than hmv (even tho theres fitt bois outside hmv!) if ya want realli cheep cds then g 2 tescos! haha nah realli its well cheep
  • Rex Records on Queen Street is the best shop for CDs at good prices. You want the new Taking Back Sunday album? You can get it £2 cheaper than HMV in here. Has good music on the listening posts, too.
  • HMV AND COMPACT DISCS ARE THE BEST ONES
  • Rex records is great. Good selection of punk/emo/indie stuff.
  • There is one nice record shop, just to the left of music world on queen street..:o)
  • Andies Records in the Butter Market was always my favourite so you can imagine my dissapointment when i recently went home to find they have closed down, now where will i go!
  • Opposite the Cheesecake Shop, lots of punk, rock and alternative.
  • Rex records, and that one on fore street...can't remember it's name. but by far the geezer with a stall on corn hill is quality, but watch the trampy onlookers sitting on the town hall steps..they've got an eye on you....
  • andy's records
  • HMV is ok
  • Hmm. Rex's Records is best, otherwise just your usual, HMV and Virgin (now Andy's is gone...but will anyone really miss it?)
  • asda, sainsbury's and tesco's are all cheaper than those b******s at vigin or our price.
  • Rex records / Andy's records are definately the best record shops, they tend to sell old classics that you can;t find in virgin or HMV
  • blatantly rex records...more emo/indie/metal/alternative bands than you can shake a chicken at.
  • Rex records sells a lot of stuff thats hard to get elsewhere and it isn't too expensive usually either. Another good point is that you're not bombarded with commercial pop music as soon as you walk in the door. Out of time is hard to find but has a good selection of new releases and quality old albums at affordable prices yay!plus they do student discount (theres nothing wrong with woolworths!)
  • yes " Out of time records" is still open " Ipswich tape and record exchange" is also well worth alook for any sort of music and cheap DVD's
  • out of time records- class place
  • out of time and rex records, please support the small buisnesses
  • don't know if its still around but out of time records used to be great.good old selections of rarities and classic vinyl.
  • Swich above red eye down fore street sell plenty of good drum and bass & hiphop.
  • Rex records - run by Scruff. Really knows what he's talking about and does good mail ordering too. Loads of interesting punk, alternative stuff here. Out of Time - stacks of second hand, some rare and promos Red Eye Records - fantastic dance and stuff. More underground - don't go here for Alice Deejay!
  • Out of time records is wicked 4 really cheap cd's. Rex records is cool-pretty cheap and sells loads of really obscure bands. also they normally have tons of flyers 4 local gigs etc which u probably would miss otherwise
  • andys is shite
  • Virgin Megastores
  • HMV - Top Dog for Music!!! Try the specialities floor upstairs, i'ts brilliant. Although I would say that as my fiancee runs it just about. Virgin - but I wouldn't buy a CD there if you paid me. They don't know what music is there.
  • Out of Time records - excellent for cheap second hand CD's - near Fore St. swimming pool.
  • Rex Records, somewhere behind the Corn Exchange. Top independent record store, often cheaper than Virgin and HMV as well!
  • has to be Out of Time records for all those bargains but otherwise Rex records has all the chart stuff cheaper than the chains.
  • Is "Out of Time" records still open?? Fine emporium.
  • Andy's Records (in the Butter Market) is pretty good. Rhythm Records (Narwich Road). Out of Time for second hand records.

Clubs (Dance Music) and Music Bars

  • why have a refurb to make a club smaller, bring back the old liquid coz its now poser central.
  • Check out the monthly 70's / 80's Night @ The ICA run by Planet Earth. Always loads of students there. They also run a 90's Night now which is crackin'
  • Liquid Envy £2 million refit.....mmmmmmmmmm!, luminar do everything on the cheap. Liquid lickakid is back but with an added OAP room....nice!
  • Chicagos, Shout...now Quilt clublounge. Nice refurb, liking the funky beanbags and shisha pipes great way to chill, but be WARNED once on a beanbag you wont want to get up with a little shisha inside ya!
  • Liquid & Envy (cardinal park) finally a new club in Ipswich, I can't wait! £2 million spent on it and opens end of August. Liquid over 18's and Envy over 25's. I can go out on weekends again now!!!
  • Harry Palmers Groove Lounge is coming home.. After a three year abscence the hugely popular 60's groove night is returning to it's original venue. The Great White Horse, on Carr St.The main shopping high st.
  • indy at the corn exchange
  • If you haven't already you should really check out Uprock at the Cock & Pye every other Friday night. they seem to be the only place in town playing credible new music and they've done well in getting some really good bands down (Forward Russia, Jamie T, Bromheads Jacket, We Start Fires). Good to see this happening - Get behind it people!
  • Before it went downhill, i.e. in the second week, Liquid was great. The Curry Club at the Cricketers was legendary. It's always worth having a pint or two in the Irish pub opposite the libary - what's it called again? Kilkenny's??
  • Planet Earth & Mojo. This is THE place to go on a Friday night now, well it's on once a month anyway. Brill 80's night, always packed out. Check out the website for photos. Think it's www.planetearth.moonfruit.com
  • The best night I go to and so do many others these days is the brilliant Planet Earth / Mojo 70's / 80's night at the Ipswich Carribean Centre on Woodbridge Road. Loads of students there for a predominately 80's night. Human League, Erasure, Bon Jovi, Madness, bit of everything really. A great laugh and not a cheap pick up cattle market, just a good fun night out. Drinks are pub prices too and it goes on until 2am. Once a month on a Friday. Look out for the huge banner above the door of the ICA or check the website. Think it's www.planetearth.moonfruit.com
  • erm, khartouche?! seriously?! no way, the bouncers have got rather heavy handed on occasion and resulted in the murder of two(?) people!! three people have been injected with HIV!! and u go in, u generally end up in a fight. It's now known as zest in a new revamp to change its image, but the tickets still say khartouche.. dear me.
  • ok so first of all are we all still living in the 80's or what!!! now boys and girls here is whats really going on in Ipswich in the 21st century!!! Ok!! Liberties, first changed into Opium lounge for a few years, and is currently Fire club, it ok but pretty small!!! Hollywoods changed into Kartouche, and is now called Zest, best club now by far, thursdays are the best!! Sound academy closed down ages ago and was changed into distinction, but now is a resturant!! Chicago's in now Shout club, for the oldies really but rather good on a sunday night. Brannigans closed years ago and now is a Frank and Benny's resturant. Attic closed down like 7 years ago, what are you all on about!! Venue and corn exchange, just dont do it!! But i must say Liquid is just the same, 12 year olds all around, but if your out of your face who cares!! So choose zest everytime!!!
  • indi night at corn exchange for under 18's but they do sell alki so its all good if u got sum1 2 get it for ya (if not drink b4 or its shit)
  • The Hogshead for Uprock - a class indie night. Every other Thursday - free to get in too. Quality!
  • Fire and Ice is good (ice = the bar, fire = the nightclub) some Fridays it is packed in there and they play all the old club classics from the 90's (there are two rooms). The clubs and bars around Ipswich are getting very strict now and zest has a policy in which they ID every one who goes in, so make sure you take your ID and for all you kiddies - go home and watch top of the pops.
  • When was this updated? Kartouche is now Zest and Liberties is now part pub art club called Fire and Ice, Sound Academy is long gone but there have been rumors that something else will be appearing. Brannigans is gone but they are working on it, whether it will be Brannigans again or something else is a mystery! Chicagos is still going strong, and Yates has been done up and now has a more clubby feel.
  • The Corn Exchange has a few under 18 nights. Never been to one myself though so not sure how good they are. Stimulation is for the 'townies' and Indie Night is for the 'greebos'. Not sure why it's called that as the people who go to it generally can't tell Indie music from my toe, but that's what it's refered to by.
  • Main clubs are Pals, Liquids, Fire and Ice and Zest. Pals is over 21's so you dont get many teens running around in there. Fights and trouble are rare. Expect to queue on a Saturday night or Bank Holiday weekend. There are 3 rooms inside covering different types of music. Liquids - kids, if you're over 21 dont bother unless you like to feel like an old giffer. Drinks are expensive, Music is quite good. Fire and Ice (formerly Libertys) good music, odd layout. Can feel like youre in someones large house due to carpeted floors. Music pretty good... atmosphere lacks somewhat. Zest (formerly Kartouche) Havent been in Zest but I hear its not attracting a differnt clientele to what Kartouche did. Can be a bit attitudey. Tends to be a lot of E-heads around and if youre white, you will feel like a minority if you go upstairs! (June 2004)
  • At last a Club that we can go to and there isn't the normal B*** S***. The Betty Ford Club round the back of the Golden Lion Hotel, off the Cornhill, is the only place where you can go and relax, party and drink, without having to wonder how many of the other people there are going to school the next day!!!!!!!! give it a look.
  • Pals, Distinction, Chicagoes plus about 4 others
  • ZEST has replaced Kartouche, a little less dingy and with the added fun of a jacuzzi (!!!) and showers, but otherwise pretty much the same- Monday nights are good (rock/punk/metal/indie with R&B upstairs). The only other place worth going is "Furry"- every other friday at the Corn Exchange.
  • Zest is so much cleaner than Kartouche ever was, decent on monday nights but don't go there every week or you'll soon get bored. The venue..well i went there once, never again..luckily it was indy night and managed to walk straight though :)
  • Kartouche - 3 murders and counting...
  • It all started with Indie Night at the Corn Exchange, then when i became legal it moved up to Kartouch and Liquid.I definatly love Monday nights at Liquid when im home from Uni and if my sources are correct Kartouch will be sadly missd since it has closed and will be re-named but hopefully the new name will still make it a great place to go. There are also loads of places like Chicargos, Edwards and pals wher you can go ad dance the night away to a veriety of different music.
  • Liquid, Brannigans... don't go there if you've been to a London club. they are so lame you'll just want to cry.
  • You wanna go to Indie (Haunted Hanger, whatever it's called now).
  • Ahhh...well back in the days, as a young patron liquid used to be a haunt. Now nicknamed as shitquid i need to be extremely langgered to venture as far as cardinal park...for the best nightlife head to kartouche on a monday(when it re opens), for some commercial rock for cheap. At the weekend head to an indie event. look out for advertising or add to guests lists. good recommendations are 'furry' at the venue, 'sonicflower' and 'envy'. All good indie/alternative nights. And never forget 'Harry Palmers' at the carribean club.....AT ALL COSTS AVOID PALS AND BRANNIGANS. PALS ESPECIALLY IS FULL OF OLD MEN TRYING TO BE YOUNG. HEN AND STAG NIGHTS GALORE THE PLACE IS FULL OF SHIRTS, SHOES AND INSURANCE WORKERS DANCING TO BAD MUSIC. BE AFRAID!!!
  • KARTOUCHE- 'Dingy' is one way to describe it, but it can be a lotta fun on Monday nights...if you have enough to drink, which is best done before 10, when the prices go up! I believe a vodka and orange is one english pound. Mondays- Indie, rock, etc. Lots of suspicioulsy young looking people though. Best avoided all other nights (townies!). LIQUID- Mondays are student nights, and can be good, can be bad. Depends on the DJ. Cheese and pop. If you feel like dancin'. Thursdays are similar. Always full of townies though. Best go to Kartouche if you want decent music. DISTINCTION- new, but will always be sound academy to me, that haven of underage drinking. Now it's stricter but, as far as I know (never been), utterly rubbish.
  • harry palmers in the ips caribean club is well worth a look for ska ,reggae , northern soul,rocksteady,60's and 70's beats.
  • Kartouche is where my friends and I go most often, we normally go on a monday night, so we can avoid the gary boys and sharons (they tend to spit on us 'greebo' types). Kartouche has a nice atmosphere in it, and the cages are great, The DJ gives you free lollypops when you request a song, and the toilets are all blue and prettyfull (yes.. im a typical girl!). Drinks are also £1 before 10pm and £2 after (very cheap! :)). I use to go to indie night when I was in year 8 (proves how young kids that go there are!) but when I got to year 10 I was pissed off with all the 10 year olds that ran about smoking pot and pretending they liked the music. fuck you little venue spoiling kids!)
  • kartouche monday nights...good indie music and all drinks for a £1 before 10pm. not all that leinient on ID though..dont even bother on school holidays. furry and riot are ok, Church of Noise (thursday night at distinction) can be alright.
  • envy club @ Great White Horse. Look out for it on roughly every other Friday. Often sells out as is a great night out, mixture of rock, indie, alternative, brit pop. i.e Cult, Nirvana, Foo's, Feeder, Stone Roses, Jam, James, Suede et cetc. Even Tenpole Tudor. All known stuff and you dance the night away.
  • All very similar.Liquid is really light and full of shite. Kartouche is quite fun on mondays sometimes if you don't go every week for six months. Then you gradually get annoyed at seeing the same people and hearing the same music. But thats your fault, not the clubs. The Venue at the cornexchange has a broad range of events which is good, lots of cool music. The actual venue is like a school hall tho, not the best location.Great White horse has some good nights with brit pop, indie, soul, funk and old sixties classics.
  • Ipswich hasn't got any nite clubs! jailbait discos yes, nite clubs NO.
  • Liquid - remember to take your homework if you go. Kartouche - remember to arm yourself Brannigans - meat market!!!!!!
  • Liquid has remarkably young clientele and plays garage. Enough said, steer well clear.
  • Best night out you can have in Ipswich? Full English Breakfast, without a doubt. These guys have played at the Great White Horse, and I think the Attic. Mad mix of weird sixties and seventies tunes. They rock! Keep an eye out for their nights.
  • vinos exclusive men only club is a must
  • not pals its full of nurses trying to get off with doctors on a thursday night and the music is shite exept for a few good tracks.
  • Kartouche (or however you spell it) is def the best club to go to. Brannigans is shit, with loads of reaklly old men, why do they even bother - we all know that they do not like the music
  • Liquid on Monday nights is really good if you just wanna have a laugh. It's Boogie Nights, and you can dress up in costume if you want, as many choose to do. It's cheap to get in, the drinks are cheap once you're in, and the music is stuff you can actually dance to. For hardcore clubbers it's a no-no, but for those of us fed up of people taking clubbing too seriously, this is fab. And as someone has said, there are sofas in the toilets, which are just handy for dropping on to if you're waiting for a friend or just knackered!
  • "the attic club" st helens street plays really great music look out for details some nights its seventies soul other nights its trance or retro or funk or sixties, they also give local d.j's a chance to do their thing.
  • ah, the Ipswich night scene, or as i say sceneless. Kartouche is a fragment of its former glory days of hollywoods, only teenyboppers believe any different, sound academy - don't even GO there, originally had potential, never realised once the tweenies discovered it, PALS is okay if you can stand being scrutinised like you're a member of the mafia, and chicagos and brannigans are bareable, particularly if you're into the 70's and your dads collegues cracking onto you. Lastly liquid, the worst of the lot, not even a proper nightclub with it being far too light for you to even consider having one too many and with the atmosphere of a fisheries factory. My advice? Stick to the pub you find you can stand and then find a student mate to visit for the real action.
  • Yeah, alright! They all prettty shit in Ipswich. Except for the Attic which is rising from the ashes. There's a good range of different nights here now and it's cheaper than any other club in the town. Good indie nights - and on a Friday!! also Garage, House and Trance nights and a well cool 60s soul, ska, punk and lounge night. All have regular Friday spots.
  • kartouche on mondays is the best-it's always packed, has a wicked atmosphere and plays great music-indie, rock, metal and crazy pop. the attic is starting up an indie nite every friday which should b good. liquid is good on thursdays cos it plays classic party stuff and there r usually less garyboys than at weekends. kartouche on saturdays can b ok, if u can put up wiv the garys. and i know everyone constantly slags off the indienet (twice a month at the corn exchange) it's still possible 2 have a really good nite there!!!
  • Is the sound academy actually a creche????
  • Kartouche... mmm? Sound academy... don't! Branigans... ok, but can be full o'sprogs 'n' cronies!
  • I'd just like to set something straight- I'm not sure how old these listings are but I can tell you a few things have changed...Ipswich is becoming rougher and rougher, with a steep increase in violent crime..A bloke can't even walk in to Kartouche/Liquid etc without getting the 'wot you lookin at' feeling from the gary boyz. The music is dated cheesy rubbish, the bouncers just stand and watch fights go on in the streets...etc..The whole town is full of attictude now. I dont mean to moan, but its true.
  • Kartousche, sound academy
  • OK, don't know when this was last updated but here goes... Libertys - Meat Market, even the introduction of Harmony on Saturdays (UK Garage) has done little to change this. The rest of the Time it's Cheese Central. (Wall of Sound excepted as I believe they play some decent Hard House and Trance) Liquid - Liberties on a large scale. Kartouche - Hollywood had character, this place is an up market kebab house. The UK Garage Nights aren't bad but I've heard a lot of commercial cheese pumping out of there on these nights (Scott Garcia should be ashamed of himself, bound for da reload indeed!) PAMS House is about the only decent night on here for serious clubbers. Sound Academy - The "New" Libertys - Meat Market for the Kindergarden Club Chicago Rock Cafe - Take your mum. Brannigans - see above oh and take any students you find walking the streets too for the abba medleys. Bar Extreme has shut. Pals - Huge Golfish Bowl full of big sharks. In other words dont go unless you like watching/pertaking in brawls and enjoy being stared at by all the passers by. Oh and the music tends to suck. The Attic - This is a small club, lacking in the refineties of the rest, however it has more character than any of them. PAMS house grew up here as did Harmony and a lot of the other local promotions. They will put on just about any night and the atmosphere has always been excellent when I've been there. Clubbing in Ipswich can be pretty pants with the exception of some local promotors trying to make a difference: PAMS house, Harmony, NV Promotions, Wall of Sound, Pure. details can be found below for some. http://www.pamshouse.co.uk http://www.nv-promotions.co.uk These nights are worth a look, apart from that, I wouldn't go and I live here.
  • Kartouche just happens to be the best club in Ipswich because it is the only one that plays proper club music and you can lean up against the wall without fear of getting dirty!! Liberty`s has slowly died a death, Bar Extreme has closed, Brannigans is your regular grab a granny club as is Chicago`s, Liquid is not too bad and thats about it. Apart from Sound Acadamey which is grab a 12 year old. Kartouche is the place to be!!
  • Kartouche is the latest revamped club in Ipswich-quite an improvement(since the days of 'Hollywoods' I hear). Although rather dark inside, the atmosphere is great, it's huge and often very packed. Also it's right next to the train station for easy access and bouncers are generally cool and helpfull. Liquid too is a big hit, good music and regular guest DJ's-garage nights are to be esp. reccommended! Although an annoying "you must hand in all coats/jackets" policy is present, this club too is a hit and well worth a visit!
  • Liquid - honestly a really good club - much better than plenty I've been to on Leeds, Manchester etc. Cheap night is Thursday. Kartouche (ex. Hollywoods) recently refurbished - really nice - good music and excellent prices. Brannigans on Cardinal park - good on Mondays - student night.
  • Hollywoods is not Hollywoods - It is now Kartouche (bizarrely enough). Kartouche is actually quite good and even attracts "Stars" such as Dave Pearce from Radio 1 and the mad Pams House crew
  • soundacademy
  • Look out for Out to Lunch at the Steamboat Inn, Smooth at L'Apres; both on Sundays usually. Traders is occasionally ok for d&b,trance. Attic can be alright; all others should be avoided!
  • New clubs - SOUND ACADEMY (classy decor, classless clientele), LIQUID (haven't visited it - but reports are good), BRANNIGANS (a big office party), PALS (a pre-club bar more than anything else), THE ATTIC (good reports), BAR EXTREME (small dancefloor, very busy, fussy bouncers, classy clientele). As you can see, the club scene in Ipswich is expanding dramatically. LIBERTY'S and HOLLYWOOD (due to close at the end of the year) are still rubbish.
  • Liquid is the brand new one. Huge club and casual dress only whatever the day of the week. They play charts in there. Bar extrem is mainly techno music :( I like Hollywood on fridays : they play R'n'B, soul, funk, HipHop, New Jack ...but get there early : the more you wait, the more you'll pay to get in. Never been in Liberty's but heard about it !! Pal's is brand new as well. It's huge (three dance floors) cheap(2pounds on saturdays) have a dress code and play charts dance music seventies and eighties music. But to get in you HAVE TO be over 21 !
  • LIQUID is a brill club, cheap to get in, cheap once your in (b4 12!) cool liquid theme inside (SOFAS IN THE TOILETS!!!) and funky, dancable to music!
  • Most clubs are fine if you don't mind cheesy music, meat-market style drinking holes. Most also operate cheep/student nights. All shut relatively early, (2-3 AM) and dress codes (execpt on student nights).
  • you say that Ipswich is the original home of jungle or whatever, well I'm afraid its bollocks. 1990-93 everyone went to either Oscars (Clacton) or Too too's (Colchester/Clacton). Club UK came to Ipswich c1993/4 and this changed things a bit, intil then Ipswich was full of commercial clubbing for the unenlightened masses. It was still a bit like this when I left in 1995 ....
  • Bar Extreme is worth a look. Get there early (before 11pm) if you want to get in. No jeans, t-shirts, trainers. Usually a few Ipswich Town players in there.
  • Liberties?? I am sonewhat bepuzzled by the two statements about, what is quite possibly the worst club I have ever been too. I visit Ipswich about ten times a year, and on the occasions when I have been to liberties I have seen at least four fights a night, usually involving lots of blood, more blood and a broken bottle. As well as this, all the women are slags and the music is shite, eg. MC HAMMER??? This is not nostalgia, it is just sad, however the one credit that liberties has for itself is that is next door to Dhaka Tandoori which is the best Curry House i have ever been to (And I have been to a lot).
  • The club that is now called hollywood was formaly called The Running Buck and Cinderella 's Alot of American Airman hung out at this place when RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge was active.
  • Forget just about every club mentioned so far they are shut down, the only ones still here are Liberties and Hollywoods that were on your list. Others that have opened are Brannigans ,Bar Extreme, Chicago Rock Cafe.
  • I've never seen a fight in Liberty's.
  • Liberty's has a big range of music - from seventies disco to deep jungle and hard house - but a poor lighting system. Good security there, but then again there are so many fights that good security is needed. I went there twice and saw 5 fights inside the club alone, not to mention 8 or 9 blood noses in the men's toilet. Very hard atmosphere prevails... big men and drunken prats stand by the bar looking for trouble all night. Having said all that, it's much safer than Hollywoods.
  • The Chevalier Club is a peculiarly 70s relic which is open to 2am every night'ish. To help convey this, imagine Val Singleton + Peter Purves decided to put a typical club in a time capsule in 1972 and then go on to bury it. Then imagine that Peter Duncan + co dig it up years later, unveil the nightclub and decide to plonk it in Ipswich. Yep, that very image would be the good old Chev' club!!!
  • Libertys
  • Hollywoods

Live Music Venues

  • milestone okay, railway used to be good, john bull no smoking!!! bummer.
  • the Railway is up and running again, loads of music 5 nights a week, original band night is thursday with between 4 and 6 live bands a night (free entry). loads of bigger punk stuff, loads of ROCK, loads of tribute bands, check out there new web site. www.ipswichrailway.co.uk
  • The best place for music doesn't exist anymore, so I won't mention it. The Earl Roberts. Whoops...
  • i saw the camelfoot raiders at the milestone they were shit hot there was this guy wearin a trilby singing who had a voice like a hammer and two (yes count them) great guitarist's the bass and drums took me back to a time when you relied upon a great rythmn section to push you forward bloody hell these boys didn't just push you they got you in there cars and drove you at 90 miles an hour. then the show offs all swapped instruments and proved how versatile they are!!!!!!!! go see them ......soon.
  • NYE Spectacular, Corn Exchange Ipswich Feat THE TALENT, playing all styles of music from 70's to date. Mark Hughes hiosts the night from the DJ circuit. Room 2 Feat The Hayze from suffolk + DJ. Tickets on Sale now: £17.50 +b/f £25 +b/f (VIP)
  • milestone, the steamboat are still great venues especially as val is back at the steamie, long may she reign. go see the camelfoot raiders they play reggae country and folk, better than kareoke shite. also the brewers arms last thursday of the month has a great buskers night with a bloke called john
  • The Regent. Closest to Ipswich? Norwich UEA, unfortunately.
  • the railway pub hosts the bands SINGLED OUT AND THE BALLISTICS. They rule.
  • check out the Grapevine mag
  • The Giles Tavern (Also a lap dancing club- fantastic!) and the Drum & Monkey although that's under new management so could change. Steamboat.
  • drum and spunky, steamboat, the milestone, cock and pye, suffolk college.....if venturing try colchester arts centre.
  • If you know where to go, there are some decent gigs on. The Giles on Sundays or The Drum and Monkey on Fridays/ Saturdays. Occasionly there's something on at the Steamboat/ Railway. Look in the evening star.
  • anywhere that promotes live music is a good place to visit.i saw a band called camel foot raiders at the brewery tap,the band was full of ex ipswich blues type players, but they played country, reggae, ska, folk, rock feck me one of them even played chainsaw banjo, well worth a look, nice to hear proper tunes harmonies, humor and foot tappin good fun.
  • The drum and monkey have bands playing almost every week, its friendly in there and always has good music!
  • drum and monkey...loads of local bands play there, premier pool club...near the docks. norwich isnt far for bigger bands (arts centre for hot rod circuit, hundred reasons etc)
  • What music venues? occasionly there are a few good acts at the cornexchange or the regent but unfortunately its mostly the likes of Blazin Squad and Daniel O'Donnel (old ladies and 13yr olds queuin up for weeks in Ipswich)The Drum and Monkey is full of local "hotshots". Yay. Digbys student union bar at suffolk collese has a jukebox.
  • Railway for live bands but ipswich could do with a purpose built pub with a stage rather than a few tables and chairs moved out of the way!
  • the tramp is cool
  • the milestone good rock and blues pub,has taken over from the railway and the steamboat, come back val we need your chilli.
  • having played in bands in the ipswich area for nearly 15 yrs the pub music scene is hard few places are willing to book bands they would much rather opt for the cheaper d.j/kareoke type crap but two real good venues are the milestone and tha steamboat.though the latter has gone downhill since the wonderfull " saint val of assistance " has left.
  • Steamboat - owners have changed but still the best pub for live music. The Milestone - blues bands. It's ok, but when you've heard one version of Mustang Sally.............. The Plough - if you don't like the band, it's next door to a kebab shop!
  • steamboat tavern does sum pretty cool bands, but there's usually alot ofdodgy old rockers in there. the premier pool club is wicked-it has sum really good rockbands on, it's always packed, there's a great atmosphere, the drinks r dirt cheap and has the best mosh in ipswich. the spread eagle on fridays is also okay.
  • The Steamboat(go there!)
  • Kartousche, sound academy
  • Corn Exchange and Regent. Churches have concerts also.
  • The Pool club - good for up and coming bands - excellent mosh pit.
  • With the Earl Roberts demolished, the Steamboat inn down the docks is taking over as a good live venue, also the Mulberry Tree has improved greatly and seems to have a variety of bands on almost every night. Local bands Red Flag and Rist are worth catching every single time they play. Apart from that there are very few venues. 'Uni' type bands play Colchester,Cambridge or Norwich but not here. Best to see bands in the parks - Alexandra Park on 'MayDay', Christchurch Park on Ipswich Music Day.
  • not many of note. But with some pleasant execptions.
  • Always look out for gigs being played at the Premier Pool club, there have been some exellent up and coming bands which have started off there.
  • Earl Roberts now shut Railway done up over 3 years ago!!
  • For live music twice a week you could do worse than check out P.J McGinty`s or the Railway Tavern on Foxhall rd for local bands of all types.
  • Some great live music venues in Ipswich:
    • Railway, Foxhall Road. Live music Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Good venue which has just been done up with stage, lights and large screen so those at the back can see the band too!
    • Earl Roberts, Cox Lane. Becoming more and more popular with the punters, this is a great venue with good music to be seen every Wednesday and Sunday.

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Ipswich. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Ipswich.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
