that music shop on clarendon park road next to the excellent specialist off-licence and the second-hand book shop is great and the guy who runs it is really sound. interested to know if he still sells those cheap tapes at the front coz i remember raiding it when i was hungry and carefully shepherding my pennies.

do not goto woolworths, or whsmiths for your CDs. there are no good CDs they they sell, its either in the charts or naff party "tunes". what you wanna do if goto rockaboom on st martin's square. its an awsoem shop, always something you want!brilliant.
Try the shops in St Martains square - like boom. They also sell loads of gig tickets and second hand cd's at bargin prices!!!
Andy:Rockaboom, a good place for all kinds of sk8 pund, ska Numetal, you can also get all your gig tickets from there for the Charlotte and the Shed.
Backtracks is also a good place for cheap CD's and 2nd hand cD's.HMV is cool cos my friend Sarah works there. :)

Rockaboom
2FUNKY Records is da best rap/hiphop/R'n'B shop in leicester!!
Our Price
Second Hand record (CD's mostly) shop at top of High street. Worth a look.
Rockaboom- Already mentioned but also good for concert tickets.
There are also several other small second hand record shops in and around Leicester and Oadby.
Ainley's - Big store, was really good last year, but has strangely gone all shit and expensive.
Time Box,Clarendon Park - You know that deleted indie 12"? You'll get it here, but maybe at a price.
World Records, Queens Road - Average second hand vinyl, but some good bargains.
Archers Records - Second hand, but they will have what you want on vinyl or CD.
Back Track - Silver Arcade, good for new & second hand CDs, excellent prices, helpful staff.
Rockaboom or 5HQ (rave).
Sneakers Records.
BPM best for rap.
Clubs (Dance Music) and Music Bars
Sumo's on Braunny Gate
The Charlotte and The Attik are the best live band clubs in Leicester. The Charlotte sometimes have under 18s nights aswell where bands go to play, and sometimes new younger bands play there aswell.
Mosh - great night out, friendly people, really cool music, 3 floors of it so u'l never get bored!! never had any trouble in there. go check it out! tuesdays n fri's r the best
the charlotte - good for live bands, well known and not. ie the pipettes and fratellis have played there. all types of music.
shed
Oddysey is ok.
Retribution ; awesome rock/goth venue on the edge of the city centre in the "rack n' roll building. Pretty much all sorts of ages 18 - 40 but probably mostly 20 - 25. We have friends travel over a hundred miles to stay with us so that they can go to retribution. If it's not your sort of thing np don't go but if it is it's truly breathtaking!
REVOLVER CLUB NIGHT feat your host DJ KAV from The HappyMondays/SonicAudio/GETLOADED PLAY's SOME OF THE BEST NEW AND OLD Indie/Funk/Breaks/Rock/60's/Northern Soul. He is also joined by the likes of Mani(stoneroses/primalscream and band mate Shaun Ryder and many more like the likes of Howard Marx etc. Every Monday Night 8.30pm till 2am The Revolution Bar New Walk Leicester LE1. Free entry most weeks kicks off Monday 26th September the 2nd week Kav will be joined by Mani on the 3rd of October.
Just to let you know that Joe Rigatoni's (St Martin's Sq) has a new name as of about 2 years ago, and Lunablu on Braunstone gate is now called Sumo
CHECK 'CASTLE ROCK CAFE' (NEXT TO CHARLOTTE) EVERY FRIDAY 8.00 - 11.00 PM ... UNDERGROUND HIP-HOP / HANGOUT SPOT (NO UNDER 18'S)
fan club forever :)
Streetlife - for nothing else other than a shag. The beer is crap and overpriced, the carpet is sticky and the music hasn't changed in over 13 years. Decent totty though.
If you love Breaks, its hard to find in Leicester, myself and a couple of mates are trying to turn things round. Sumo on a Thursday plays Breaks and Electro, upstairs. D&B downstairs. Check it out, Also MUSE bar on Narbourgh rd, little place but good tunes.
Retribution rocknite @ Leicester Square, Belgrave Gate every Saturday night
www.rocknite.com cool discussion forum
it would have to be retribution which is a nite held on a sat at the rack n roll/leicestersqure i go there like its my religon i recommend top floor
the best club in leicester in the miinute has to be zanzibar.... life is also a good club but dosnt have a mix of music aswell as people... creation is the worst and seems to be full of people who have come out on thir own plus the cheesy music is too cheesy the dance is too dnce, and the r n b is ok if the room fit more people in, the best pubs in my opinion in leicester are the litten tree, definatley, it is a cross between a club and a chilled out pub, also paroday is a lively pub with the best music on a friday and saturday night and the best bar is undecided, with a mix of pop danc3 and r n b, also has a open dance space outside in the summer and a tent in the winter.
the shed, attik, rack and roll, the fanclub, mosh
Swivel @ Club Havana, Friday 4th June 2004
Be welcomed by the funky sound of Swivel before we drive up the tempo & take you on a musical journey across the spectrum of house & trance. Expect the music to funky, bouncy & uplifting as the evening progresses gradually towards tougher beats laced with classics.
DJ's on the night: Stu Paling (Swivel resident), Nathan Ryder (Funky Sundays), Lady Bianca (Twist, London) and DJP (Cream competition winner, Swivel resident).
Swivel goes tribal kicking off with Stu Paling and Nathan Ryder playing the best in uplifting funk to warm us up for Lady Bianca. Expect the music to go tribal with a twist. Lady Bianca has just played at the coveted Trade in London following in the footsteps of Tony De Vit, Alan Thompson, Ian M et al. Finally handing over to DJP who recently won the Cream competition warming up for Fergie.
contact@swiveluk.com
www.swiveluk.com
GO to Mosh, It was mosquito coast, but is now mush better. Its like fanclub - though clean, and much bigger, and also reasonably nice and atractive people seem to go - also the bouncers dont want you to leave... unlike fanclub.
For young patrons then trazx is a good place to go but if you have fake i.d then try retrobution ..its always a laugh plus you can play pool while your in there aswell
Theres THE MINT. Thats all i know. Oh and ZEUS.
Retribution at the Rack n Roll every saturday 9.30pm - 4am if you look over 16 you get in, it's great, but the booze is expensive, goto jaceys before hand and get tanked up there, its cheaper but the beers kinda flat. Traz (oxygen) is ok on thursdays, poor on fridays and saturdays because of our beloved townie scum that float around in there with their 12 year old girlfriends (best mates of their little sisters).
traz or charlotte on fir nite its HIP HOP!!
What ever you do, don't go to Zanzibar, Creation is the place to go!
Well clubs and bars are being very kind to Mr/Miss thritysomething at the moment! I would recommend a champagne starter in The Champagne Bar underneath the Case restaurant on 4-6 Hotel Street, one cool place with some very classy ladies on a Saturday evening (dress to impress!) Going onward if you want to chillout and relax your ear drums before hard core clubbing then try the courthouse on New Walk next door to Revolutions (too busy) on a Saturday night. Finally walk down the road for the ultimate club night right now that is 'Weavers' 54 Kings Street. We like to call this small palace 'Beavers' for obvious reasons and its even got its own bed upstairs. Very nice (and naughty) girls! Are you up for it? £5 in has to be the best investment in Leicester on a Saturday night. (by the way Junction 21 if you want to go to a reasonable after club until 5/6am). Have fun
Zoots, my favorite place ever, dont knock it, lol. I used to dance there I it was my second home! But as for Leicester as a whole .......I cant stand the place! Lets please keep Leicester English!
Always enjoy bam-bu-dah personally.
Just for the record..alkatraz is now oxygen...its not full of weirdo's as some would say (see previous!)
I'm not an attention seeking eyesaw who has relationship problems with my parents lol...i dont even wear black...i just know this is one of the few places to go in leic thats not a meat market...thats rare!!!
The best clubs nowerdays is CREATION just look at their 'txt in the city' thing on valentines day its was a great nite with a lot of flirtin!
Although previously i would agree to all the other comments about zanzibar have you been in there lately it has changed somewhat and is now a more or less decent place as far as places in leicester go... check out leeds though now that is a wikid place to go clubbing
ROCKSTAR

www.loungeone.com
Also, The Attik every 2 Thursdays.
A night called "Bootcamp". Miss Frenchie plays a mix of Indie, old cheesy songs, Hip Hop, Breaks, D'n'B and loads of funny bootlegs. For people with a wicked sense of humour.
The Attik is a small intimate venue, it has a nice bohemian style to it. Next nights are on Thursday 12 and 26 of September from 9pm to late. They also have live bands upstairs and the entrance is only £2.
The Attik is on Freelane, behind BHS. Tricky to find but well worth it.
www.the-attik.co.uk
zeus in town
Sector 5/Alcatraz/Oxygen or whatever is cool for skate-types to hang around BUT its more packed out in the last couple of yrs due to the kiddies lappin up the fashion aspect...losers. For the townies amongst you go round the corner to Zanzibar or to some of the other townie clubs like - Creation, Industria, Undecided etc
The only club to be is Club Rebirth a new venue opposite St Margarets bus station. Its very cool and very clean. Check out Friday nights for really good house music, Shivoo is the name of the night.
the attic(k) was good when it was split between maurice coleman upstairs and club downstairs.
I still new to Leicester and discovering the places to go - dont worry I wont be stepping inside Zanizbar! I recommend Po Na Naa -cool music and atmosphere, really friendly place. Leicster seems to foster a real bar culture rather than clubs.
The Charlotee. The Shed.
THE CHEESE AT DMU, by the way I love BIG NICK
rightyo:Krystals/Kudos is no more, so no more of the meat masrket variety in there. It is now Creation!! it is so much better than it has ever been. There is NO trouble in there anymore. The type of people is m,uch more up market then it used 2 be. With three rooms it has a great choice for peopple. A cheesy pop golden oldies room(which i personally think is the best room), a dance room, and a garage room(to be avoided i'm afraid). so, just a lil' up date. Enjoy!! xx
ha ha ha where are their decent clubs in leicester!!!! Zanzibar yeah kids gallore where if u do pull then u will get summonded to court the next day. Then u end up in jail and its ur ass
The only places to go to are The Fan Club ot Oxygen playing the best in indie and rock. At St Margerets bus station turn left and round the corner, if you turn right you'll hit townie land with zanzibar and krystals ahhhhhhh, you can't go down their unless your wearing white and sprinkled with glitter.
i used 2 go Traz alot but it got boring, i suppose its something u do in ur youth, err R/Bar is good when the ponce at the door lets u in same applies for undecided but thats full of slags anyway lol. Creation rules its the best club in leicster nothing like what Krystals/Kudos used to be, much nicer but.... some of the faces look familiar. Po na na and bar gaudi are really good on student nights and the music in these two is uaually better then most places altough Goulds has some decent Dj's quite alot. for the punks out there u gotta give it 2 charlotte.
how old is this information. high spirits hasn't been at the uni for years and mozzy coast an 'acid jazz' club. jeezuz!
fact 1 - bubblelove and hotdog are the only nights worth going to at either the uni or junction 21
fact 2 - goodbye cruel world at mozzy coast is so-so, but thinks its much better than it actually is.
fact 3 - zanzibar, kudos, life etc are NOT clubs, they are meat markets for neanderthals.
fact 4 - if you want a real club experience go to the emporium in coalville
fact 5 - the fan club and alcatraz/oxygen/sector 5/whatever are ok if you're a snakebite drinking indie kid (theres not much else on offer for guitar fans in the city)
ubonga!
leicester place
Streetlife is cool. Easy going place for gay and straight people alike to hang out. Drag DJ Cassie usually provides the entertainment in one room (chart, camp and a bit of hard house), while the "club" plays commercial house and trance with it's fabulous laser blazing!
Andy:I dont do dance, But the charlotte is a great place to go to gigs, they get some wicked bands playing. also there is Alcatraz or Oxygen its now called, has a lil halfpipe which is always open.
Industria ( was flaming colossus) great for all house lovers and an alright urban music night on tuesday's ..... student night good too for cheap drinks!!
life - anyone who liked Palais and appreciated the naffness of the place will be disappointed with Life ... very bright inside and has become much smaller!! also full of Demontford students!!
Kudos -- if its total cheese you want this is your place friday nights!! had many a good laugh there mostly at the other patrons however -- you'll feel like you#'ve been whizzed back to the eighties where wet perms and white stilettos are fashionable still .... still its worth it for a giggle
Zanzibar -- great!!! very big and you usually get served straight away at the bar because of its large size always good for some fun
Gold's -- reasonably good if you like hip hop etc saturday nights not to packed and quite a good laugh but if that's the music you like then head to BRANIGANS on a thursday night!!! be prepared to be frisked lol!!! Great Music and good clientel..... may even spot Mark Morrison and the Leicester Riders in there if your lucky (???) but get there early or be prepared to queue!
Demontford union -- dingy and small
Leicester university union -- spacious and cheap -- awful music but good for a laugh can be packed though wednesday's is reagans -80s night very cheap and Friday its Mega which doesn't live up to its name but can be fun anyway
The FAn Club -- no self respecting person would ever be seen in this shit hole but if you like to dance like a pratt to indie music this one may be for you
Oxygen -- as above think that there is a drum and bass night there too
Junction 21 --- dont really have time fo rthe place but i know alot of people who love it very expensive last time i went
Go to STORM in Coalville for a better night and to escape the townies on their jeans and string vests and go an cane it with the hard-house mentalists at the best hard house night around at the moment. BOSH. Or try Passion (same club but on Saturday nights) for your trancey tinkly winkly sounds---both kick ass.
lets be honest nite life in leicester sucks......
The Fanclub...indie music, 60's, 80's, punk, hardcore etc
Goodbye Cruel World every Saturday at Mosquito Coast (is it still called that?). It has just been refurbished, and since John the Promoter stopped doing Get It On on a Friday at Junction 21, it has become the best night around. Be ready for some proper clubbing. No need to go prepared as there are a few people who can sort you out when you are in there.
Kudos is getting better! - Try out the excellent handbag night on a Friday with Dick Cheese (WICKED!)
10 Iron or the Sand wedge
PO NA NAA
Me and my friends have recently started our Zanzibar boycot and will only go there if it's someone's birthday and we'd feel nasty if we didn't. To be honest I'm at uni most of the time and I'd like to spend my evenings back home at somewhere playing proper music - I must recommend The Fanclub for all those indie bods.
Lizard Lounge is an absolute must! Filled with 20/30 somethings it's definitely the coolest place to be seen at the moment, with two chill-out bars on the ground floor and first floor, followed up with a second floor playing the latest dance and garage hits mixed with the occasional old school tunes from the 80's/90's. It's all finished off on the top floor with a regular live band playing classic 60's and 70's music. It's free to get in before 10am or £4-5 after. Drinks prices are expensive but as it's the place to be seen you have to expect it! Be warned though, dress code is very strict so make sure you look the part or be prepared for a night on the streets!
Revolution Bar is also a very good up and coming bar (now open until around 1am) on Friday and Saturdays.
Life is SHIT!!! I went in the other day with my mate, and we were the only two people in there. What have they done to Palais!! It was better than Pansybar!
Join me in the Boycot of Kudos, Leicesters worst nightclub. Ive never returning again since i got CS gased!
The Palais is now called Life, and is actually good, but then anything is an improvement on Zanzibar. For chilling though Bar Gaudi is the best.
oxygen, erm... the sheds ok sometimes... the pineapple is gay(if your names Dale winton go there!)
Alcatraz, Kudos
Well there's always Zanzibar and Kudos where all of Leicester's rude boys and girls go to desperately try and 'pull'. Then there are the clubs for those whose taste is sonewhat more alternative.
The Cooler
Junction 21 is the best dance club in the city, constantly has good DJ's at the weekend and nice women if you look. Oh and Krystals, Palais are only good if you are 15-18 and into chart music, they think Peter Andre is dance music!!!
A new(ish) club Zanzibar is huge, biggest bar in Europe apparently, however it's a rollerskate rink during the day and all the kids must hide in the bogs cause almost everyone is about 15, it'd be alright otherwise.
flaming colossus is a decent place if your into classic house and garage. With a chilled atmosphere your'e going to have a good night if you enjoy good music, dancing and drinking. It's not cheap to get in or for drinks, but you pay for what you get.
Factory - some live music - small and intimate - nice crowd. Top of High Street. Streetlife - mostly gay club - good vibe. Saturday way tacky.
Check out Bar Gaudi. It is THE funkiest pub/club in town although it is members and NUS only. Entry is free and the 'enter the dragon' strawberry icecream cocktail comes highly recomended
I would like to know who wrote the piece on the clubs that I have just read, because he has no idea what he is on about. The way he describes Krystals and Le Palais de Danse sounds as though he has never been to them.To be honest he appears as though he is a proper student freak, long hair and all. This person says that clubs like the Fan Club and Alcatraz are the 'good' clubs;well what a load of bollocks. The sort of people that attend these venues need hanging;they are wierd and are an eyesore. What is with wearing all this black stuff and makeup, are they proper benders or what? How can you say that a club full of people who have been disowned by their parents and are breaking the norm so as to gain the attention they so desire is good.Sort yourself out you freak.
Alcatraz Nightclub is not located on the net at http://www.alcatraz.co.uk
White Room took over from The Mud Club, not The Underground which is an entirely different place.
Gita the Diva and Linds the chick- Emporioum is cool for a serious bop but Mozzy Coast for that crusty student appeal. Otherwise Scott's house for that all important shag
Streetlife, fantastic, cool tunes, cheap and wonderfully camp
A couple of clubs worth a mention, The Attik and The Shed. The Attik's a damn fine little club behind BHS (can't remember the street name). They have two rooms, upstairs it's Acid Jazz, trip hop etc, downstairs it's a bit more jungley. The Shed's a more mature crowd, Live music every night, occasionally it gets some very good bands. Upstairs & downstairs (noizy & mellow). Pricey beer, but a bit different from your average club...
Bad
Krystals
Zoots - Both full of the white stilleto and hand bag brigade, Krystals is a major meat market. Zoots closed in 1996 and has now become "Le Palais De Dance" - still a sad white stiletto and handbag dive though.
Good
Alcatraz (formerly Sector 5) - (Indie/Metal Club - total dive but really cheap)
The Fan Club - (Used to be an Indie only club - now hosts house nights as well such as Progress)
Mosquito Coast - Acid Jazz place with occasional live bands such as Desmond Dekker / The Bhundu Boys
'The Underground' closed down. The site has been gutted and taken over by a new outfit called "White Cube". White Cube was due to open in the summer of '96. The club looks top!!
It's called 'The White Room' not the White Cube. Alcatraz is no cheaper than the rest and it certainly is not a dance music club.
High Spirits at the Uni - Really good house nights, recieved huge amounts of good press from dance mags, and as such you must be either a member (membership £3) or a current Leicester Uni Student to gain entrance.
Live Music Venues
The Charlotte and The Attik are the best live band clubs in Leicester. The Charlotte sometimes have under 18s nights aswell where bands go to play, and sometimes new younger bands play there aswell.
the charlotte, attik, the shed. mosh has an open mic night on a tuesday, mayb a weds too.
the shed ask some locals
shed
I've heard that Po Na Na is fun.
The Charlotte near DMU (de montfort university) and Leicester University for smaller bands DeMontfort Hall (which is just outside of leicester near leicester university and is NOWHERE NEAR DMU) for larger bands.
The Music Cafe (Jam Jar) New Park Street Leicester is the venue for rock night, friday october 14th from 7.30 pm to 2 am - a great line up of nu and punk rock bands including blakfish and the landaus. Tickets £3 on the door. see www.getyourbandon.com
CHECK 'CASTLE ROCK CAFE' (NEXT TO CHARLOTTE)EVERY FRIDAY 8.00 - 11.00 PM ... UNDERGROUND HIP-HOP / HANGOUT SPOT (NO UNDER 18'S)
The Charlotte on Newarke Street has a regular line up of bands and is popular with students from nearby De Montfort Uni.
Concerts at De Montfort Hall on University Road.

MAGAZINE SADLY NO LONGER EXSISTS--BEEN DEMOLISHED.
THE MUSICIAN CLYDE STREET(OFF HUMBRERSTONE GATE)HAS LIVE ROOTS/ACCOSTIC MUSIC ALMOST EVERY NIGHT--A GREAT SMALL FRIENDLY VENUE.
NORTHERN SOUL NIGHT EVERY MONTH AT THE COUNTING HOUSE PUB CATTLE MARKET FREEMANS COMMON AND AT HALF TIME ORANGE BURNMOOR ST.
The Attic is wicked, its the size of a shoebox, and bands and acts play there all the time. Its great. http://the-attik.tripod.com/. go have a look. look out for gigs in a fanzine called shrapnel - which is at shrapnel.info. great stuff.
The Shed, a good place for local up and coming bands with gigs most nights
The Charlotte, this place is bigger than the shed and has more well known bands play there, it has a decent history aswell with bands like Rage Against the Machine and Oasis have played here, current bands that r makin it quite big on the rock scene that have played here are the likes of [spunge] and whitmore.
The Attik, pokey little venue near the connexions building in town
attik
The charlotte is the better of venues to goto as bigger/better local/national bands play there and on the off-chance there might be a big international band going otherwise Nottingham Rock City Or Birmingham Academy are where the biggest bands play closely
We go to the famous VICTORIA BIKERS PUB in coalville the best live music venue on this planet for rock related music see www.vicbikerspub.co.uk
The Shed, The Attic, The Charlotte all have good bands playing a lot, including popular ones (recent ones include Capdowm, Inme, NoFX and One Minute Silence). Theres DeMonfort Hall aswell.
The Shed on Yeonman Street, The Attik on Free Lane, The Charlottle opposite the Magazine, next to Castle Rock (great pub!) The Sanvey Gate Tavern on Sanvey Gate
shed or charlotte
Again, The Shed.
the charlotte is the best in leicester - its small but has the biggest and best bands that exist (including the unsigned fellas). Hell is for heroes, my awesome compilation, this girl, products of the fall have all had shows there - if u know ur metal or emo..u'll know them!!! :)
DeMontfort Hall gets packed sometimes and you get some semi-famous bands, noting great. my advice is go to NEC for music
De Montfort Hall, many pubs have live music regularly.
de monfort hall
Charlotte, Shed...erm...
de montfort hall gardens or just outside it.
the musician's not too bad either.
charlotte should go back to its original layout: acoustics poor, and line of sight worse. sorry! but it's true.
abbey park underused.
phoenix.
Again: THe Charlotte, The Shed, THe DeMonfort, The Uni
Demontfort hall
The Princess Charlotte has gigs on and has a cool dark purple decor. you can also make it a real night out with the range of cocktails they do behind the bar.
Charlotte is about as good as u get in leicester
DMontford hall gets some good bands too but if u want the top stuff u gotta go 2 Birmingham which aint 2 bad coz its only half an hour away
Hartleys (Belgrave Gate) is the only place to go! Lots of trance and bouncy hard house. Soon to be revamped and joined by a new venue in Short Street. Serves alcohol until 2, but stays open until VERY late :-)
Andy:The charlotte is a great place to go to gigs, they get some wicked bands playing. Also the Shed where my mate Dale plays, shout out to him, hey.
shed
The Charlotte
abby park music festival
The Charlotte, various pubs
De Montfort Hall - if anyone is going to play a concert in dear old Leicester they'll go there.
The Princess Charlotte
Shed - small - live bands - nice hangout. FActory - small stage. Charlotte - undergoing massive refurbishment to become a much bigger venue. Nice pub.... or at least it used to be.
The Charlotte,(Newarke)is good for indie & up & coming bands. Blur,Pulp & Stone Roses have all played there on their way up and many more on their way down! De Montfort is best student venue as beer is cheaper than Uni, and generally better bands.
De Montfort Hall - home to big bands eg the Prodigy have played here in recent times.
