• William Iliffe who first brought Rev William Lea's stocking frame to Hinckley in 1589 and paved the way for Hinckley's emergence as a world power in the Hosiery industry. Dr Robert Chessher - world renowned surgeon who specialised in skeletal injuries and built mechanical devices for the treatment of spinal injuries. Dick Turpin - although not born and bred in Hinckley, lived in Hinckley and spent most of his *free time* at the Cock Inn at Sibson. The poet Lord Byron, whose wife took refuge at Kirky Mallory when their marriage broke up. Another poet - arguably the most popular English poet - John Cleveland grew up in Hinckley in the mid-17th century. His father, Thomas, was the vicar here. George Fox, the founding father of the Quakers - was born in the local villiage of Fenny Drayton. Bare-knuckle fighter Nat Langham, the only man to beat the great bare-knuckle fighter Tom Sayers, was born in Hinckley. George Frederick Handel composed his famous piece, The Messiah, at a country house near Market Bosworth. King Richard III, of York and Henry, Earl of Richmond fought in the Battle of Bosworth which is now being investigated as it appears it might not have taken place in Bosworth after all!

• Since the doomsday book was written many famous people have lived in the hinckley area either passing through or were residents. For instance all you have to do is look at the names of the streets in the town and a history leeson unfolds before your eyes. Chesser st - Dr Chesser a bone masseur once treated Napoleons neice (she has bandy legs) Shakespear Drive, Shakespear stayed in hinckley for a very short time but long enough to write about it in one of his plays. William Iliffe Street William famous for the stocking machine. Hansom Road Hansom invented the hansom cab. Hawley road.
