Food
The chippy by the bridge on Newland Ave is cheap and tasty
the golden star do the best chinese takeaway in the world
There seem to be hundreds of pizza takeaways. The best ones are Prima and San Remos on Cottingham Road.
Yankeeland's chips are ace - loads of that spicy stuff on.
Maharajah down Holderness Road and Asian Kitchen on Princes Ave are Hull's best curry houses, in my opinion.
Wei-hay Chinese on Cott road is still the best-dont get delivery though, pick it up otherwise it comes from the in town store which is not the best.
Pier Luigi Restorante is a wonderful place to eat, whatever your budget is. Friendly and humorous staff. Real Italian food. Open Tues to Sunday, 6.30-11.00(11.30 Sat&Sun). 84 Princes Ave.Hull tel:01482 342357.Ciao
Cave Street Fisheries. Great fish - cooked in dripping.
You've missed out the famous Jackson's food stores. There's one on nearly every cornor and many are open 24hrs. Friendly staff and you're always sure to bump into someone you know. It a tradional institution in Hull!
Tropicana-Beverley Rd. Malaysian and Indonesian food. Can get full which slows down service somewhat.
Sorrentos on Cottingham road have the best ever pizzas stay away from food stop on Beverly road
Newland Fisheries. On one of the backstreets off Newland Avenue. Beautiful haddock and chips.
Chaplains : Mexican on Princes Avenue. £4.50 for all you can eat on buffet nights.
Hitchcock's : Veggie restaurant where the first to order for the night gets to pick the contents of the buffet. All you can eat for a tenner.
Peppinos for delivered pizza. Perno's is more expensive, but the chicken pizzas are gorgeous.
Asian Kitchen restaurant on Princess Avenue.
Witham Fisheries. The best Fish & Chips in the north.
The best place for doughnuts has to be Leanardos lower level of Princess Quay and Upper deck of Princess Quay. Also they are hoping the Waterfront, will be re-opened in time for Christmas this year (1997).
My favourite takeaway is Sorrento on Cottingham Road. Pizzas, burgers, kebabs, Chinese and a really great continental menu at reasonable prices. (+ the staff are nice!)
The bakers at the end of Beverley Road, near Vermont Street. See the "best things about Hull" section for full details.
From recent experience Ray's Place has been resting on its laurels for a while, the food aint what it used to be. There is a very good Greek restaurant opposite Ray's Place and that is well worth a try.
Rays Place (excellent, cheapish Balti House) - Princes Avenue.
Pubs
Durty Nellies is brilliant. The Old Town and Marina area is a great night out, with a good variety of pubs. I've been out in many large cities, and not many beat Hull for night life.
Ye Olde White Harte; Probably the best all round pub in Hull, Great Building, Great atmosphere for Old and Young, Great Beer, Great History, dates from the English Civil was don't forget to ask about the plotting room.
Bring back the Earl de Grey. Spent many a strange night in there. Miles better before all that cage stuff started. George street has now got a really intimidating atmosphere. Avoid it unless your some young dickhead who thinks hes Mike Tyson after 2 shandys.
If you want to get very drunk very quickly then try Macys in the town centre they have an offer of some description every weekend my personal favourites being the doubles for singles and two bottles for the price of one
The best pub crawl is either in Berverly or down Bev road
The Blue Lamp has been reopened. It is now just The Lamp. No more music or comedy but the place is still pretty cool. The urinals are too close together, though and the wierd bloke with the stammer still tries to chat you up when your in the toilets.
Black Boy - real ale paradise
The Bridge Tavern, which is under the Humber Brigde. Quite posh if you sit inside, but you can sit outside and look out over the river. I've been there a few times with my friends and it can be a really good laugh. Last time I was there, I met Elvis!
Tap and Spile-Spring Bank. 12 real ales always available. Great service. George-Land Of Green Ginger, Cosy and Friendly
The Polar Bear, Spring Bank. Large traditional pub with live folk music on Wednesday evenings, and live rock on Saturdays. Popular with gays. The Vauxhall Tavern, Hessle Road. 24.7.365 gay pub. St George's, St George's Road. Gay owned and gay friendly. Drag on Saturday night when the land lord Ray becomes drag queen Bobby Mandrell. Stay until the end and watch a really moving act...
The Haworth pub is always decent, especially wednesday between 3p.m and 7:30 p.m when it's £1 a pint- lots of students
Spring Bank area: Polar Bear for atmosphere; Tap & Spile for Real Ale. Plus more!
Manchester Arms in Scale Lane was/is a good starter for a night out.
Student Union bar : £1.15 pint of cider. Pity about the assheads who populate it Friday and Saturday nights.
The Old Town is packed with great pubs: The Mint, Old White Heart, Sailmakers Arms.
The Dram Shop, Pepis, Rugby Tavern (rockers place) and the Venue.
The Apollo Pub in East Hull, had some terrific times there.
Irish pubs have taken off in Hull in the last couple of years (Irish are our largest ethnic minority): Scruffy Murphys, Beverley Road and O'Niels, Baker Street, are popular with real Guiness and very good food. Durty Nellies on High Street also has decent Guiness and is popular with the local (excellent) Irish musicians (sunday pm).
many others.
The Mission and The Sailmakers Arms in the Old Town are good.
Ye olde White Hart - one of the oldest pubs in Britain good beer
The Duke of Wellington - guest beers O.P. etc - great, except for some of the bar staff.
The Mainbrace - awful Karaoke: very popular. The much lamented Mainbrace is no more! It's now called the Focsyle Firkin and has been ruined.
Blue Lamp - music and comedy sell pitchers of beer: good value [But, Nov 96:] The Blue Lamp has shut now, I don't know if it will ever re-open.
Spring Bank Tavern - good beer choice
Cafes and Coffee Shops
McCoys Coffee House on Princes Dock Street is probably the best in the city centre. Also Planet Coffee on Newland Avenue. There is another good one on Story Street with coffee blends from all over the world. Sorry, I've forgotten the name.
Just jump on the ferry to the Dam for decent coffee shops.
Good News cafe and book shop is very nice. i dont know the street but its the one with 'kiwi save' on the corner
The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!
