Clubs (Dance Music) and Music Bars

  • why the fuck u would come to Leigh from afar is beyond me. Stella is prob the trendiest place with that funky house shit that they play. Barbs is shit beyond belief, same dj's, same tunes, week in, week out. too much rock n classics, not enough trance n scouse. lastly u got Underbar. if u can ignore the stripey jumper wankers and the kiddie club atmosphere the tunes are bangin all nite. not a bad one in sight. top fosters superchilled 2.
  • Barbs is boomin the music is top notch n its very un-leigh like. Pity everywhere else isn the same tho, under no costs go in edisons or chambers......as this site advices you to put it the clientel are somewhat youthful n although they fancy themselves as clubs they way off the grade. Cafe Stella's a bit naff as well dodgy music, no dance floor and a crap atmosphere. Leigh arms is good tho but that more of a pub so since rubins shut we've just one nightclub and good as it is could do with another to filter the simpletons into.
  • Rite firstly eddisons is fair shite unless ya want fat slaggs n cheep drinks. best place in town has to be cafe stella by far, after a gud sesh in there with the very reasonably priced shots and the four pint jugs, barbarellas is fair gud esepecialy on sundays. Then to finnish the night go to the legendery mr eats on lord street with its famous keebabs and my favourite 10" magerita on a garlic base. All this for around £20. good times
  • The only 'club' now is barbarellas. lots of places now closed. the cube (last name of the dive at the old cinema), toffs and now reubens, but ive heard these two are going to re-open
  • edisons and barbarellas bangin music
  • Skybar is good for watching matches because it has 3 massive tv screens, it has 4 snooker tables, 2 american pool tables and 2 pool tables- which is only 50p a game, they also have a 24 hour bottle bar. Edisons is great, its more for 18 to 21 age, they play mainly dance and rnb and a few random 70s songs for no apparent reason, all the bar staff are friendly and the dj will even put your coat behind the dj box. drinks are cheap its 1.20 for a malabu/vodca/peachsnaps n lemonade or coke until 8 and then at 9 the 1 pound bottle bar opens. Avenue is good too. the bar staff are great there. chambers does some good Mc nights so for people who do Mcin or like it chambers is good, and the pools only 50p.
  • I have lived in Leigh all my life and have to say that the town has now reached an all time low in this respect. Being 25, you are no longer socially accepted in any of the venues as all are crammed with kids, and I mean KIDS! I'll be honest (and critised), I use to really enjoy my nights round Leigh a few years ago, but the town has now been taken over by idiots. Barbarellas was never a great venue to begin with, with a sweaty atmosphere and Sh*te music but you could just about grin and bare it due to the good drink offers that were available. Now, unfortunately the music and drink offers are the same, however we now have the addition of a stabbing or fatal incident once every couple of weeks. Things are so bad it has actually now just been assigned its own rapid response unit. To further bring this section up to speed Ruebins is no more! It finally closed its doors earlier this year for good, and as yet there are no plans for a re-launch. I would now honestly recommend you go to Manchester for a night out and avoid the depressing nighlt life Leigh has to offer. Believe me as a true Leyther I would prefer to be much more positive, but thats the score I'm afraid...
  • All the clubs are full of skanks who have sex in the skips behind Shipleys Bingo.
  • Barbrellas.... local khazi and night spot.. beats Ruebens for sex in the toilets. A sex show with music. Edisons.. mmmmmm lets just say its a great meeting point for all those from the Library Square, and Westleythers. Brings a whole different meaning for 'getting off your face'
  • WHAT A SHIT HOLE!! THE BEER TASTES LIKE CLEANING FLUID! THE WOMEN "LOOK REMARKABLY YOUNG" IT'S £5 TO GET IN!! (THEY THINK THEY'RE IN MANCHESTER!) YOUR SHOES STICK TO THE GROUND! THE FOOD IS AVAILABLE FOR SHOT PUTT PLAYERS, WHY NOT REQUEST TO INSPECT THEIR KITCHENS! (IV'E BEEN IN, WOW,,LOL!!) IT'S YOUR LEGAL RIGHT TO INSPECT THE KITCHEN IF YOUR EATING THEIR FOOD! GIVE IT A GO! STILL USING THE SAME LIGHTING SYSTEM FROM 10 YEARS AGO! AND IT SOUNDS LIKE THE SAME D.J. (AND HE STILL CANT MIX TWO SONGS IN TO EACH OTHER!?) THE OWNER OF THIS PLACE JUST HASN'T GOT A CLUE!? A CLUB WITH A LOT OF POTENTIAL BEING LAID TO WASTE! BUT DONT TAKE MY WORD FOR IT, VISIT TODAY AND EXPERIENCE IT YOUR SELF!
  • In Leigh theres not only three clubs. One of the best clubs in the early 90's was Seagers (now Knocked down) it was a Top (it was as influential as the Hacienda)club Stu Allen used to DJ however your feet used to stick to the floor carpet cause it had had so much beer on it
  • RUEBENS!! who ever is sayin this club is poo must be mad! loads of birds mint music. bank holiday sundays are best! oh n chambers is a mint club too. tunes bang in there
  • LEIGH ARMS has the fittest barmaids in leigh and THE fittest male glass collector in the north west(according to my sister and girlfriend thats why they go in on a friday the bitches).
  • Ruebens, Bar Barellas. That's about it since Toffs was closed down for serving thousands of school children.
  • i work in ruebens, and i think that some of the comments on this page have some truth in them, but others are just pathetic! ruebens does have its fights, but which club that you know doesnt? the atmosphere is friendly, (most of the time) and most people have a good night! since it has been done up the custom has picked up and it is proving to be a hit! if the people on this page dont like the place then why do they keep returning? which they obviously do, to know bout the refurbishment! and before i get any clever comments bout how thick i am to live in leigh and work in ruebens, dont bother, iv got the brains to put any of you haters to shame! not all people in leigh are slow! and they aint all dogs dinners either,i know some stunning girls that come in ruebens and your the ones missing out if you dont come and check them out!
  • Troffs & slappers is no more. Thank the lord!!! Dustybins is on the up & the other new one, Sumthin tree is a rip off!
  • you forget Bar Barella's nightclub in Leigh. One of the top hot spots and not a night out to be missed regards emma
  • well dont cry but toffs has been shut down, but theres always barbarellas the newish place which is okay. but guess what someone has done reubens up completly. and the floor is no longer sticky and everyone mainly goes there. brill when your drunk.
  • Leighs now got 2 clubs. Yes 2! Firstly there is the famous Ruebins nitespot. It might have a bad rep, but they have just recently refurbished and I can now confirm that your feet will no longer stick to the floor! A few drink promos help get you wrecked, but the music can sometimes be lacking, that is unless you like a Tiffani / Cypress Hill megamix!
  • Well Leigh has been hit by a storm, the new and funky club "Barberellas" - 1 problem though, it's the same crowd that go in Ruebens and Toffs, so not much different from them, well apart from the swanky seats!!!
  • There is a new club in Leigh BARBARELLAS - and I don't think anyone who has ever been there knows anything about Jane Fonda (shame) Anyway it's just your standard towny hole playing all the usual crap to keep the slow locals entertained (and they are very easily entertained) Ruebins (Dustbins) has had a revamp to keep up with 'Bar Bars' (as the Leigh trolls call it) but it is still as bad as ever. Best thing is to stay away!
  • 2 foot long with nails in to defend ourselves against Wigginers.
  • New club has opened, the sadly named BARBERELLAS which has got the inbreds excited. If you love to queue for 45 minutes to enter a discotechque the size of your front-room then its ideal. By day a pub you would stay clear, by night its a club you would stay clear. Its habitted by those too good for Ruebins, those barred from Toffs & those too stupid to catch the 26 to manchester for a half-decent night out. The biggest novelty is the cage area, where mysteriously only the local overweight slappers decide to pleasure us with their unique form of erotic dancing. Highly recommended, if you have too much money & want a local bimbo for the night.
  • Clubs? Leigh has the grand total of two! Both of them are incredibly crap, firstly there is Toffs and Toppers (formerly Fletchers, formerly god knows what...) which is situated over Leigh bridge. From what I recall it is a long room with lots of mirrors (nice...) And secondly there is the legendary Ruebens (aka Dustbins), the beer is disgusting and expensive and the women are disgusting and cheap. There used to be a third club in Leigh - Juicy Lucy's (!) - but it has since shut down. Shame really as it wasn't that bad, for late night drinking escapdes without the risk of having your face kicked in. Music in the two clubs is restricted to townie cheese and such like.
  • If you enjoy getting off with married people you went to school with and have less than 5 GCSEs grades A-C, you might be able to stomach Ruebens. You might even love it and come back week after week. It's been there for years, so someone does.
  • The Hippodrome has been shut for a while. Who knows when it will open and to by honest who cares ?
  • The Sky Bar is a snooker club with american and english table's as well as snooker tables. the prices are very good and it has a huge telly screen (Cinemas size) which has all sporting events and playstation copmetitions on sundays
  • Ruebens what a place to avoid, a floor that sticks to your feet, a sound system so bad you can easliy hear yourself talk over ii (is that normal!?!!??!) and the worst bunch of 10 to twoers ive ever met
  • There is a new club called The Hippodrome.
  • There are 2 clubs in leigh both are dog ruff they are full of people that think as slow as they talk. Rubins is the beter of the 2 but your feet stick to the floor and its full of scum.
  • Two Clubs in Leigh, Reubens for 25+ crowd dance/80's mix with occasional live band (Like Edwin Starr) Other is called Toffs for 16 y.o. plus women, lots of dance
  • A few clubs (Labour club, Libral club, British Legion, Only Joking) Two real clubs, Toffs and Rubins, both are flea pits though.
  • Leigh has many pubs but only one club so be warned of the mix of people you might meet if you happen to venture there.

Live Music Venues

  • If you want to see Frogsnot or Vagina Armpit than Chambers is the place for desperately untalented bands.
  • The music scene in Leigh is excellent. Try the karaoke in the Britannia. Everynight Tuesday - Sunday except Wednesday.
  • None except the mosh pit that was once railway rd college
  • when the hell are Leigh pub landlords going to wake up - little wonder leigh pubs are having a bad time - it's the same old boring pub entertainment...Kareoke or Quiz nite...What about rock nite or live rock/punk bands...there are 3 pubs in Hindley that are now doing a roaring trade with live bands on...there is 3 pubs in Atherton & another 3 in Tyldesly...why is there no pubs in leigh that have live rock bands on a Friday or Saturday & properly advertise and promote it.....the first pub that does it will have the place packed to the rafters within six months.
  • The Boars Head has live bands on, and has a live music festival (sic) every August bank holiday. This is the pub where the college kids/alternative sorts hang out. Never been the same since it was mauled with by the Firkin people (although the seats are starting to be slashed again! :) ) Oh and the Grove sometimes has old farts playing folk songs in there (if thats your bag)
  • Leigh is a void.
  • Anyone from Leigh knows after Anne left the Boars Head, there are only sh**ty little folk bands who perform in Leigh, but anyone wanting nu music can check out 'The Hollywood Bar' (formerley 'The Cricketer') in Poolstock; here on the first Firday on every month. The best in Local Metal & Punk play here. Check it out and ask for 'Dan'.
  • As above - Hippodrome closed. Who knows whether it's temporary and who gives a monkey's ? Juicy Lucy's on Lord Street - get a life - topless barstaff ? it's true that Leigh is still in the dark ages where people still think it's still ok to exploit women
  • The Flitch and Firkin (Formally Boars Head) and Churchills (Leigh college music students often play here!)
  • The Boars head Thursday night. Occasionaly at the Globe, Spinning Jenny, and Churchills.

Cinemas

  • it's a shame there is no cinema in leigh!please someone do something!
  • cinema??? nearest one is warrington or bolton - leigh cinema seems to go through cycles of doomed businesses about every 6 months
  • you can go to wigan- uci or horich-waner brothers, waner brothers is best because you can lift up the arm rests to put your feet up
  • Leigh doesnt have cinemas, however there is a place you can go and listen to Wax Cylinder recordings if you can get through the locals with pitchforks and burning effigys of Steven Speilberg.
  • Rumour has it there will be a cinema as part of the new development on Marshall Street playing fields. Of course, the developers could still change their minds and build...ooh, say... a nightclub perhaps? Cos we're a bit short of clubs and pubs in Leigh y'know
  • theres nothing fun in leigh its so boring unless u wonna be a junkie
  • Leigh doesn't have anything like this. Apparently there used to be 7 cinemas in Leigh....... but that....... was a long time ago. They opened a Laserquest a few years ago but like everything else in Leigh it went bust after a few weeks. They nearly built a huge ski dome cinema bowling swimming shopping etc. complex called Xanadu but the stupid locals complained. #ankers! I hate this town.
  • nearest is horwich
  • Not a sausage - you have to go out of Leigh to see a film (which isn't a bad thing) The Warners at Bolton is probably the nearest with the best facilities, but there is also Virgin at Wigan, UCI at Warrington and the Print Works in Manchester.
  • I can't begin to tell you how lacking in any sort of cultural activity or popular entertainment Leigh is. Of course there isn't a cinema! Not since Rocky IV came out anyway.
  • there was a Cinema that closed down then a quasar moved in and closed down now it is a club who often get some big'ish names in to preform (e.g atb, shanks and bigfoot and phats and small e.t.c)called "The Hippodrome" the name was dirived from the name of the Cinema when it was first opened in the town ten's of years ago! now is is shut temporarily because of complants of noise from the old bag's (Chronologically challenged) that live near it
  • The cinema is shut say no more.
  • No bowling, no cinema and no quasar type things, have to go to Bolton or Wigan. Plans for Xanadu project are going through though. This is a +£100 million in door skiing centre, multi screen cinema, aquatics centre, bowling alley, pubs (do we need more pubs) and clubs.

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Leigh. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Leigh.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
