• Windsor is agreat place for kids. From the bridge that joins Windsor and Eton there is a great walk along the Thames. You can feed the ducks and swans. There's a little funfair for little kids and a great leisure centre witha huge pool, adventure playground etc.
• I stayed in Windsor as a guest of H.M. government in 1950 -1952. Windsor was a pleasant place, not much to see for a conscript Lifeguard. There are two things that I remember well. 1. When the King died, we had to mount guard up the hil to Queen Vic's statue where the fellows with the terribily large and noisy boots blew their extraordinary loud trumpets before announcing that the 'King is dead, long live the Queen!' the 2nd thing was the restaurant called the Nell Gwynn where we could get a fine meat pie with beans and chips for a lowly sum of 1 shilling and sixpence. We were not allowed in the pub just a few doors away since it was the territory of the foot guards who called us 'Donkey Wallopers' and would beat up on our chappies.
  Now I remeber a third thing that was most pleasant. Just across the road from the Combermere Barracks there was a little cafe or bakery that sold the most delicious bread rolls with cheddar cheese. We used to use the excuse of having to road test a truck to get out and buy a quantity of these delicious rolls for NAAFI break. Hey those were the days!
• You are very negative about Windsor, which is not very nice. You obviously don't know very much about the place. Leaving aside Windsor, what about Eton? Yes you poor hard up unemployed will find Eton expensive too, but if you are not on social handouts, Eton, offers an awful lot.
  Then there are the shops, which have such a great variety of interesting things. There is one shop called David Eton, open all the time, and full of interesting things, especially for boys aged 13 - 90. From leathergoods, to Maglites and smart silver walking sticks to... well that would be telling, you need to visit!
  You know Eton College was founded by a King who wanted an independent school which provided a good education for boys who were needed to run Britain's civil service. It has been doing a good job ever since. I love the place, its architecture, the people (not just those who go there, but those who work there as well) and the whole atmosphere. There are concerts and other lovely things to go to, if you know the right people, and a walk around the Brocas, down by the river, where you can view Britain's two jewels, better than any 7th wonder of the world. But then we English do hide our best... and all you can see is the worst.
  I love the visitors personally, they are so interesting to talk too, and offer interesting opportunities if you have the time, but then I suppose you have never thought about looking for the silver lining in apparently "worst" situations?
