The Stuff We Can't Fit In Somewhere Else
Make use of the small independent traders here - "use them or lose them"
About the Craven Museum - one of the exhibits is an implement called "Lowking tongs" (long-handled tongs for weeding). If anyone didn't know that Yorkshire was once Scandinavian territory, that's a good indication. The Norwegian word for "weeding" is "luking" even now!
Regarding: Skipton Yorkshire England. Compiled by a born-and-bred ex. Skiptonian. Town Logo = The Gateway To The Dales Town is situated in the lovely valley of the River Aire, surrounded by high heather and bracken covered moors. A short historical chronology:
1066
Town is listed as Sceap-tun. And there's still are a lot of sheep roamin them moors.
1135
Construction of Skipton Castle is begun - still well preserved - popular tourist attraction.
1315
Construction of the Parish Church - the glory of the High Street - is begun - popular tourist attraction.
1650
The last recorded raid by the Scots, who steal cattle, women, and burn the town... Records indicate the exact number of cattle stolen, but not the amount of women. This is due to the Scots habit of sending some of the women back.
1605
The Black Horse Pub - still the finest Pub in Skipton - opens for business.
1657
The Red Lion Pub opens - a fairly good Pub for such a new establishment.
1961
The Brothel, is raided and finally closed, by the Bobby.
The finest Skateboard Shop is
Ronnie Homers Wheelies - situated on Sheep Street.
Examples of the Yorkshire dialect as spoken in Skipton:
Thallattergerranutha... You will have to get another
Estaitwithee... Have you got it with you?
Owduzeeno... How does he know?
And many more... The dialect is understandable, but quite different in a town as little as seven miles away. One must admit that the dialect is much more economical than Standard English.
Skipton is a very nice town which never gets mentioned anywhere. Despite being quite small it has a few shops (but no decent ones ) and loads and loads of pubs, the best of these being the Red Lion. It has one (very crap) nightclub and lots of places to buy kebabs and pizzas.
The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!
In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor
(the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.
We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!
If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide.
