Record Shops

  • musiczone!
  • mix music!
  • er.... i dgo 2 mucis zone 4 mine, best selection
  • mix music next to where trik used to be and music zone.
  • Music Zone - good selection of music and one of my mates works there so get discount
  • Mix Music is ok but its really small. I'm lazy so i prefer ordering of amazon.co.uk - its cheaper and it has a wider selection. Plus, you don't have to leave your home.
  • Asda - good selection of chart cd's etc, quite cheap Mix Music - small and cramped but good selection
  • Mix Music......got to be
  • The Record shops in Harrogate are actually shit. Jus go 2 Asda cos its nice an Cheap.
  • Mix Music
  • There's only one place...Mix Music opposite Mac Ds. The guy who owns it is cool and knows everything and anything about music.
  • Mix Music is really good helpful staff, good selection of rock, indie, a bit of dance, can get you stuff pretty quickly if they've not got it, the only proper record shop in town. Best to stick to the two guys who work there in the week(Matt and Ollie I think), part timer is a bit qlueless, looks like he's in fancy dress a lot of the time, used to work at Jimmy's apparently so kind of figures.
  • mix music and the 1 near the victoria statue, next 2 the jewellery shop
  • Mix music is OK, but nothing special...beats Woolworths though.
  • Mix music, Dj trev from Jimmys works there sometimes during the day, and its great for most music mosh, hardcore and cheesy pop might be in there somewhere.
  • None worth shouting about since the Sound of Music closed.
  • Mix music is the only one, really. nice people, little small.
  • 'Mixmusic' near Halifax oppisite Agos
  • Mix Music the best of a very sad selection
  • Mix Music - small but good selection. Bloke who runs it is a miserable fecker though.
  • Oh what a poor selection of record shops Harrogate has, we only really have Woolworths and Our Price worth mentioning.
  • Mix Music opposite McDonalds always has a good selection of independent stuff, and for bargain hunters, there used to be a second hand record stall down in the Market Hall, though the bloke who ran it's probably dead and gone now.
  • Two top record shops just next to each other by Debenhams! One's called Adagio and tends to be jazz / classical - the other (name forgotten) tends to do rock / pop / electronica / god knaaas what else. The proprietor is a lovely aging flowerchild...
  • There's a great 2nd hand/rarities shop behind the theatre on Cheltenham crescent
  • our price its over the road from the train station itscheap
  • Unfortunately, the mighty John Faith Records has closed down, but there's still Mix Music on Oxford Street, and they're pretty good for obscurities as well as mainstream charty stuff. A record shop where you don't have to ask specially if you want vinyl! Not just CDs, but RECORDS!!!

Clubs (Dance Music) and Music Bars

  • HYPER! go to hyper!
  • Cardinal Sins has definatly scrapped back its reputation since that tranny sold it to the new owners!!
  • Time seems to draw in a few scallies on a weekend, a good place to head for is Bar Med! Plays some decent music and a good atmosphere. Pretty Cheap also!
  • Erm, well Jimmys is no longer - not sure what it's called now but they don't seem to have actually done anything to the building (shame). Carringtons is small, grubby (and that's just the men lol) The rest aren't worth noting. Better clubs in Leeds.
  • carringtons under 18s r gd, so it truancy. plenty of talent ladwise.......
  • Po Na Na has seriously gud Club Truancy events evri1 now+den
  • I'm a dj at Bottom of the Bottle, fortnightly on Mondays at Carringtons, I play metal, nu-metal, punk, grunge and noize, plus do a night on Tuesdays there, alt rock hip hop etc
  • The new place to go is Revolution where all the Harrogate rich kids go with their mirrors and rolled up fifties. Its a posing palace but the musics good, especially on a friday night.
  • Bar Med is the best club in harrogate, its not silly money in, great djs and service from bar staff.
  • Time club definatly-been refurbished really well and has a great atmosphere.Bit pricey tho
  • CLUBS in Harrogate?? Don't make me laugh. Jimmy's load of cheesy fools dancing to cheesy music, anyone thinking this is a good club has obviously never left Yorkshire. Cardinal Sins, if you can recover from seeing the man/woman/man/whatever freaky thing on the door, you'll discover it's cheese on most nights, also very tiny although work has been done on decor, it's given the club some kind of "aren't I great" attitude problem...it's still pretty pathetic. I've never been to Po Na Na's in Harrogate although I've been to ones in other towns and they've been alright. Everyone in Harrogate I've asked says Po Na Na's is rubbish...so I'm thinking it must be a quality place judging by the usual Harrogate standards.
  • My advice - get the hell out and go someplace where they know what a club is supposed to be. If you like cheesy music, overcharging and clubs full of fools, then you're going to be loving it. Jimmy's, worth seeing once just to see the Mini they had hanging up on the stairs, but seriously scummy, and full of scum. Cardinals Sins is just hilarious, and incredibly tragic at the same time...thinks its some classy joint, with some screwed up tranny lookalike freak who owns it. But totally tiny, full of drunken townies who think they're so cool, and the music is just Cheese...no exceptions.
  • having worked in both jimmys and cardinal sins it feels rather strange to be telling people to go check out carringtons on a tuesday. i loved working at both other clubs, but carringtons is changing its immage. tuesday nights in harrogate used to always be the best in jimmys, and while it can still be a good night there, the ever rising price of drinks can be off putting. ever since a certain d.j. decamped to carringtons on a tues night however nights there have been getting better and better. the d.j. will play a bit of most types of music (as long as it is not too cheesy!, and the bands that are on before can be fantastic. go there if you want an unpretentious night out with your mates in your baggies and trainers, or a girly night in skirts and knee boots.
  • Jimmys is full of idiots from places like knaresborough and Pately Bridge trying to pull local 16 year olds. Po na na is the only option (high standard of clientele!)
  • we need some proper hard house and happy hardcore clubs.
  • Pretty dire selection.
  • there has only ever been jimmy's in my eyes. used to go to carringtons when jimmy's wouldn't let us in, but that didn't happen very often. jimmy's may well be a dive, but we still love it. very easy to run away from someone in those 4 different rooms...
  • Po-na-na is alright, and Jimmys is good for a laugh. Otherwise its Leeds again.
  • There's only 1. Jimmys. Don't bother with anywhere else. Our gang are in here as often as possible, trust me, you'll know us if you see us...! I went to Carringtons when I was 18. That was enough. Never again. As for Po Na Na, words cannot describe how bad this place is. Cardinals is fine if you're on too much charlie and only care about how much Prada and Gucci you're wearing ;)
  • Carringtons - Over 30's only, Jimmys - not had any money spent on it since the 1980's god knows what it looks like inside when the lights are on!! Po Na Na's - dance club full of drugged up kids. Cardinal Sins - worth going if the owner is on the door (full on Cruella Da Ville lookalike)
  • Jimmy's is the best to end up on a drunken night out there's a good mix of people and four different rooms so they're bound to play something you like AND its free for girls on a Wednesday too - Yippee!!! Cardinal sins is rather good too.... this ones free for girls on a Friday night and plays plenty of cheese so its my favourite place to start the weekend. The only bad thing is that the people in there are a bit up there own bums sometimes but don't be put off, its worth a visit just to see what hideous outfit Josephine is wearing the week!!!!!!
  • AAARRRGGHHHHHH! JIMMY'S! Land of the well placed vomit splatter.
  • Best clubs- Po Na Na, Jimmys, Carringtons and Cardinals
  • Cardinal Sins, on lower station parade, a place to good to meet rich kids spending Daddies money on substances to put up their nose. O.K retro night on the first Friday of the month, cheesy music rest of month. Carringtons, on upper station parade, once thought of as the worst club in Harrogate but has improved dramatically, regular crowd of young, unpretencious professionals, play chart and dance music Firdays and Saturdays, good chillout session on a Sunday. Jimmy's, Kings Road, people once travelled from far and wide to get the Jimmy's experience, but these days they travel far and wide to avoid it! Full of very young girls and very old sleazy men trying to get the said girls very drunk. I wonder why??? Po Na Na, Kings Road, Fantastically decorated like a opium den in Morrocco, this club is where the young trendies, who cannot afford to get Leeds, go. Different club nights, just like all the other Po Na Na's.
  • carringtons is ok
  • Harrogate has now been left with four so called nightclubs following Thomas's being changed into a lap dancing club! Po Na Na is the smallest of the three, playing the most hard core dance, and the interior reminds some people of a brothel. Jimmy's is where all the yobs, drug dealers and school children of Harrogate tend to think is cool but musically it favours the likes of S Club 7 and Steps. The interior also desperatley needs a make over, it has been the same for around 8 - 10 years. Carringtons which has long had the reputation of being a cattle market, has slowly begun to change. Downstairs still is a cattle market, but upstairs, where they do on occasions play some indie music, has been taken over by the single 30 something professionals brigade, who seems to be there on a regular basis. The final club in Harrogate is Club Zoo, the hang out for posh kids spending daddies money on illegal substances, it even has a private members room ( i wonder what goes on in there?)!!
  • The various Jimmy's clubs are bog standard dance, though some big names have occasionally been lured over to play Thursday night sets upstairs. The Harrogate Arms has an indie/goth/rock night on Saturdays. Curiosity fans might like to go look at Josephines at the bottom of Mount Parade, it was closed down one night more than 10 years ago and still stands as it was that night, half drunk pints and all. Kind of like the Marie Celeste of clubs.
  • Some of the schoolgirls that get into Jimmy's and do really rude things on the dancefloor of J2 would make your hair stand on end
  • EVOLUTIN! (sexy birds)
  • Just to point out according to your latest update Thomas'club isnt open but as its the longest runninh night club in harrogate (and its free to get in) it is definately still open despite failed takeover bids from jimmys!!!!!!
  • The newest club to open is Pu Na Na's (hum?) if you hate Jimmy's and think that Carringtons is a dive then go there. It's a few doors away from Jimmy's. Club Zoo is now Club xi (11) and is where you go if you dabble in illegal substances.
  • Hmmm. Not sure what's going on in the current Knowhere guide. Jimmy's does't serve Miller. Trust me, I work there. We used to though, fair play. I don't know how old the info is, but judging by the fact that Thomas's is still listed as open, it's probably a bit dated. Jimmy's is actually twice as big as it used to be, with a pub downstairs, and the club upstairs which has four separate rooms, each with a different sort of music, and, to be perfectly honest, people do come from far and wide to go out here, second rate though it's reputation may be. Carrintons hasn't been Carringtons for a while now. Still a crappy little dance-round-your-handbag squaddy dive, but called HG1 (the postcode. Tragic, isn't it?)
  • Jimmys, Club XI,

Live Music Venues

  • hyper?
  • little wonder pub
  • There is live bands every Tuesday at carringtons. www.bottomfthebottle.com is the site, they are all alt. to heavy.
  • the little wonder on ripon road - regular punk/hardcore gigs, see nyhc.co.uk, hghc.org
  • Regency
  • Just to let visitors know. The Harrogate Arms is no more and is now infact a Thai Restaurant!!!! So the best place now for Live Music is THE IRON DUKE, formerly The Honest Lawyer/Runrunner/Old Tradition. Fridays are Jam Nite & Open mic nite. Sunday - Live Music of all genres. Under New & Improved Management - John & Paul, have done the place up big style. Lovely pub. Great Food. Lovely atmosphere. Friendly Staff. Well worth a visit.
  • Conference Centre.
  • little wonder puts on cool punk gigs care of the mysteriouse nyhc
  • regency (near asda) my mate sometimes plays there. alternative music
  • Not many of these. Try out Monteys on a Sunday night. Acoustic set with Nige and Ade, just make sure you know the words to Hotel California and In the Air Tonight.
  • apparently, the regency (pub nr asda) has started to encourage live music!! (hope they've redecorated upstairs, though). often stuff at the little wonder, and there's always the blues bar on montpellier.
  • Edisons and the Blues Bar are the place to be for Live Music. Live Jazz funk on at one of these places most monday nights. I'd ring them to make sure before you get the bus.
  • Tricky one. Harrogate isn't big on the live music front. The major place is Blues Bar but I personally hate the place. Other than that you can catch stuff at Muckles sometimes, Honest Lawyer's OK as is Little Wonder.
  • Go to Leeds
  • Is the Harrogate Arms still doing this?
  • Honest Lawyer, The Harrogate Arms, The Blues Bar, Monteys and Planet Vodka
  • Since the sad closure of the Harrogate Arms, the only place offering regular live music is the Honest Laywer, but the Little Wonder is now starting to put on a few more gigs. A 10 minute drive from Harrogate, The Sun Inn at Norwood has live bands on every Sunday night.
  • Planet Vodka does very cheap drinks deals and now runs anthems of dance on a thursday night and even has a hard house night on a sunday! Wicked!!!
  • Live acts play at the Harrogate Arms on an irregular schedule.
  • 20/11 Shooter are playing at the Dragon Pub on kings road if anyone is interested. Ask them to tell you who Claire is (thats me!)
  • The Harrogate Arms, Edisons
  • You've got to go to The Montpellier round the corner from Betty's to see Gyrating Geoff - an aged popster in weird clothes DJing, dancing and miming along to the songs - a local legend. He used to be on Saturday and Thursday nights.

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Harrogate. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Harrogate.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
