Food

  • Apparently the Hairy Spunk, (once known as The Merry Monk) no longer provides us with Indian Cuisine. The short lived service is rumoured to have ceased due to who was actually going to clean the oven?
  • The Merry Monk (locally known as the hairy spunk) - Now has a fab indian restaurant eat in and takeaway (whens the home delivery starting owner?) Heard its gonna have a major refurb soon too, so keep eyes peeled Also turn up DBA Sunday Lunchtime, always one or another locals having bar-b-que, nuff drinks nuff said!!
  • If you want food within 3.6 miles of Dunton then the chinese at the DBA is your best bet. I can personally offer a non-commissioned seal of approval due to the fact that Dunton's very own clan of lager haters have paid this suberb establishment a visit. Legend has it that there was a chippy on the corner of Bennetts Hill, but hey, you knew that anyway didn't you?
  • All three pubs do food. The back room of the Crown & Thistle used to be run as a Balti House but I think it went bust. The Dunton Bassett Arms has now got a Chinese Chef in to do a full Chinese menu, and they do take aways as well. Not much known about the Merry Monk, no-one ever goes there.

Pubs

  • The lady at the Dunton Bassett Arms is probably called the mutton lady because the pubs original name was the Shoulder of Mutton. It certainly won't be for any other reason. She a bit of a 'looker' to say the least.
  • "Dunton's Lonely Hearts Club" meet up on a Sunday lunch in the DBA. They don't actually plan to, it just turn's out that way. The members consist of late thirty year olds who have either never had a girlfriend, never will have a girlfriend or claim to have once had a girlfriend, but no-one ever recalls the occasion!
  • The Merry Monk is under new management! it's gotta be worth a try. Having only been in there once when the other bloke was there, I have never been back in twelfty months. I'd like to see the atmos in there now though. Still a senior crowd I believe, but as long as you're local you'll apparrantly get a warm welcome. hazaar!
  • Well the connection the DBA has with mutton is, quite astonishingly, that it used to be called the Shoulder of Mutton during those Creme-de-Menthe-fuelled evenings of yesteryear. So there.
  • Many in this petite, picturesque village live in fear of the Merry Monk because they "don't like young people who aren't from round here" gracing its premises. Just what DOES go on of a wet tuesday evening behind that door? I heard that some people went into this place one friday night and were driven out by the landlord for walzing in and using the building as a Public House. How dare they go into a village pub to have a pint and play darts?
  • The Merry Monk. Pretty boring place, not much known coz no-one ever goes there. Off the A426 on Station Rd.
  • Crown & Thistle. Also not bad, picking up after a variety of recent owners. Sells Stella too. Hopefully it'll keep the locals kids who race around in their Ford Fiestas dreaming of the day when they may actually get served in the crown.
  • The Dunton Bassett Arms. Not a bad place, run by a couple, the woman is mysteriously nicknamed the mutton lady for some reason????? Does Chinese Food.

Cafes and Coffee Shops

  • Mrs Brookes makes exceedingly good cakes which can be bought from "home farm shop"
  • The nearest the village has to a coffee shop is the Hurford household which often put on a lovely spread of 'Go Ahead Apple Bakes, Rocky chocolate bars and the occasional Riva - mmm lovely sild

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.
