Favourite Building

  • The chapel in Grove Lane.
  • St Giles Church - it's great when they get those bells going
  • Hartnell's Solicitors on Camberwell Green
  • Remember the building with the Butterfly - Camberwell Beauty??
  • John Ruskin School. My teacher (Mr. Peacock) went on to be something big in the UK education scene.
  • St Giles Church Camberwell Church Street designed by Sir George Gilbert-Scott and opened in 1844 this is one of the best and biggest revival gothic churches in Britain. A Church has sttod on this ancient site for over 1000 thousand years. Services every Sunday Vicar- Rev. Canon R.W.G Bomford tel 0171 703 4503
  • Kennedy's Sausage Building.

Demolish It Now Building

  • Butterfly Walk
  • The building behind where Nando's is, Denmark Hill. It used to be a cinema but they knocked most of it down and built a really cheap, shoddy building. I think it's cheap housing for people who couldn't normally afford it which is a good thing - but they could at least have made it more attractive.
  • The Forum at Junction of Coldharbour Lane and Denmark Hill
  • Well, that Pink Monstrosity at Elephant & Castle sort of overshadows everything in South Lonnon.

The Best Things

  • Close to central london
  • The Fox on the Hill - when it comes to having a family in the summer time. They have recently installed a fab new climbing frame which is perfect for those tots who have to endure a few hours down the pub with mum and dad in the sunshine. Enables you to sit back for a while and let them ware themselves out.
  • The architecture, the interesting people, the variety.
  • The people, the mix of cultures
  • Ruskin Park, has tame squirrels running about, tennis courts, a basketball court, childrens playground, it is a small, pretty, quiet park, a good place to get some fresh air if you don't have a back garden
  • To answer the question as to where Sarsparilla was purchased - Baldwin's Health Food shop, on the Walworth Road opposite Amelia street
  • The 42 bus route (which goes from outside Capital News Agent on Denmark Hill) goes via Tower Bridge, which is a personal fave of mine, and then onto Liverpool Street Station via the City.
  • Well served by buses. Lots of parks and greens.
  • SASPARILLA at the Elephant. cant remember the name of the place that sold it though. I'd swop all Canadian Beers for just one more pint of SASPARILLA!!
  • Very trendy student area village atmosphere will become the Camden of the nest millenium!
  • Brilliant international and cheap food. Good bus routes straight into the centre of town and to and from Waterloo. A vibrant cultural mix, lovely old Georgian Houses.

The Worst Things

  • The moodiest atmosphere outside of Brixton, seriously dirty, polluted, police sirens going at all hours, unsafe streets.
  • The saddos with massive inferiority complexes driving tarted up wrecks with distorted, thumping music coming out of them who glower at you, while trying to run you over and thinking they look cool in Camberwell Church Street.
  • No tube. The local Boroughs
  • The delapidated, overrun council estates
  • Nearly all the shops sell 'Coke Light' instead of ye olde proper Diet Coke. Dreadful !
  • High crime rate, and getting higher - if you live with the poor, you must expect to get done by them. Ignorance is hell.
  • Not being able to come back.
  • doesn't get enough good publicity although it deserves it!
  • Constant traffic, the rubbish, persistant sirens, high crime rate, no tube.

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Camberwell. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Camberwell.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
