• The Venture Theatre, North Street, Ashby de la ZOuch is a lively amateur theatre. Always on the look out for new members. Website : www.ventureads.plus.com
• Ashby is a waste of a good nuclear testing site.
• Ashby Baptist Church on Brook Street. A good place to go for a very active church that isn't too cringe worthy. They have activities not just on Sundays; in fact the place is open most days and quite a few evenings. God is usually made relevent and personal for all age groups. They have a full and active Junior Church each Sunday morning. The main event of the week is the Sunday Morning at 10:30 service with free coffee afterwards in the lounge. Services are free-style with a good blend of music from a varied music group (clavinova/guitars/drums/singers)and the more traditional 'steam' organ, played by a lively retired guy who also doubles as the church's resident leading pray-er for sick people! The minister/vicar (they call him the Pastor)is a friendly, busy Dutch guy who (by reputation) doesn't always preach the best of sermons, but was OK when we heard him! He is known as a good carer and is greatly respected around town and by his flock. They run regular Alpha courses here, so they are really determined about 'making' new Christians too. Lots of other special things happen apparently, even lively things for older people. The Sunday we turned up, we got a great welcome at the door by a friendly guy with a big smile and chatty style. They have a lift too for people with walking difficulties (the service happens upstairs!)and the chatty guy doubles as lift attendent/doorman. A nice place to be. Rating 4*.
• The good news is that Ashby and the school - Ivanhoe, have just had a lotery grant for a lot of money to build an indoor swimming pool!

• Open Air Swimming Pool at Hood Park Leisure Centre, North Street. The council make a big thing of this "open air" crap but it's only because they are too tight to pay for a roof! Explore the surrounding villages, Melbourne, Ticknall, Repton are all worth a visit.
