Stockport, Greater Manchester Triumphs and Tragedies

* Important Note: all entries in the Knowhere Guide are the opinions of its users. see What is Knowhere for more info about the Guide.

Favourite Building

  • There's some proper dark satanic mills still left, though most have been torn down. Some like Reddish Mill have been badly converted, other like Broadstone Mill still manufacture textiles (check out the factory shop!) In the town centre, Houldsworth Mill is now a great apartment block.
  • The Viaduct. Showing its age but never the less a spectacle that dominates the Stockport skyline.
  • viaduct? fuck off o.k. it's the biggest building made of brick in the world but don't you think there's a reason no-one except the sort of moron who cheerfully lives in this pisshole would use something so small (ie a brick) to build something so big.tossers.
  • The Plaza Cinema - a building of national importance built in 1930 and containing some wonderful art deco features. After 30 years as a bingo hall and 2 years unoccupied, it is coming to life again to provide Stockport with a much-needed new arts venue.
  • Impressive Market hall The Viaduct is the largest brick built structure in Europe
  • Market Hall, The Pyramid
  • I love the Cast-iron/glass Market building. In fact, I love the whole Market area. It's what most towns are now missing (I live near Basingstoke now so help me).
  • Little JackHorners
  • The viaduct.

Demolish It Now Building

  • all scally youth clubs
  • The giant concrete slab that covers the river and holds up the shops, otherwise known as the town.
  • All of the old mills that spoil this town.
  • the shoppimg precinct.all of it.
  • Sun alliance house houses the soulless registry office. Not keen on the Merseyway shopping centre. but I quite like the Giant Blue Pyramid which might get a few votes from others
  • That horrid Glass Pyramid (I think Coop bought it). It looks like a joke sat in the middle of that bomb-site area.
  • The whole Grand Central complex, with all the children (seconded from the film 'Deliverance') still in it.

The Best Things

  • the people, always a good night out on the razzle.also no trouble!
  • Well I was going to say some thing nice about Stocky but,, I cant think of -any-thing, come to think of it this place is a dump.Even the footy team is bobins! Oh hang on, no one mentioned the war time cave system that twists it way to---no where--DOH !!
  • transfer clothing, bones \note (again) country side not too far away
  • The local kids may be yobs but they tend to prefer beating each other up, plus they do know their town is shit which is why they all go into Manchester as soon as they are allowed out late enough. McVities factory carries the scent of chocolate and baking biscuits for at least a mile whichever way the wind's blowing...yum!
  • The Pubs Edgeley Park Stockport County FC The Heritage, such as the viaduct, the market place etc. Some of this town has not changed, which is good to see. The People (except teenagers). Very freindly and enjoy a laugh.
  • Stockport County FC
  • Pubs People and Market.
  • Stockport County Football Club
  • Since you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone (and I left Stockport 10 years ago) I don't think there's a place like it for sitting in a 'proper' pub of an evening and just having a good laugh with everyone else. No problems resulting from making eye contact with some yob (Try Hazel Grove or Cheadle for that). Robinsons Mild rules as do most of the pubs that serve it (which means 50% of the huge number of pubs in town)
  • The A6 to Buxton or Manchester.
  • They have done up the town centre since i stopped living there and now it is not quite as awfull as it used to be.
  • The biggest brick structure in the world and the market.

The Worst Things

  • grand central
  • the plastic man u fans! why do they do that when they have the county!
  • Anyone who supports City or United
  • scallys
  • ASDA and Sainsburys being opposite each other. Causes gridlock in the town centre most Saturdays. The Teenage Dickheads in this town. The Close Proximity of the Theatre of Shite. Merseyway Shopping Centre.
  • THOUSENDS OF 15 YEAR OLD SKIVS THAT WEAR DOG EAR HATS AND CAN ONLY SAY "GIMMIE YOUR MONEY DICKHEAD"
  • Council vandlism, lack of good music/arts venue due to closeness of manchester. Being a Man City fan now Stockport are doing so much better than them.
  • The fact that there is absolutely no decent Nightlife
  • Wilsons Bitter (do they still make the stuff?). 'Stay away from the Chessboard son, if you want to get some drinking done'. Grand Central. Neon Lights attracting brain-dead youth like moths. Anything North of Debenhams on the A6 (starts to get a tad rough). Traffic lights every 7 inches on the A6 (why buy a car with more than 2 gears?)
  • Not advisable to leave your car, because a) it won't be there when you get back, b) you'll be lucky to get back
  • Parking.

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Stockport. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Stockport.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
