Record Shops
Borders, Peel Centre, Stockport - not bad for northern soul music.
There is a new shop opened up in Houldsworth Mill Shopping Village, its sells Playstation Games, CD's and last week when i was in there they had just brought in a load of old records.. its definatley worth a look if your looking for something in particular.
There is a HMV in the merseyway shopping center and borders in the peel center
music zone - cheap n cheerful
Ermmmmmmmm You have two choices a Vrigin ;) or HMV bit rubbish really
music zone is ok cheap desent cds
music zone, HMV
music zone or HMV
Music Zone...the only good thing about Stockport. Nice and cheap.
None worth listing, but easy to get on the 192 bus to manchester where there are loads.
music zone rocks for cheap stuff, double 4 if you want vinyl, up the hill past where cobwebs used to be
The record shop down on Lower Hillgate, cant think of its name but i know its been there donkeys years and hasnt changed much.
There is a wierd shop down underbank in Stockport that sells cheap gig t-shirts etc. Although the guy in the shop looks similar to many of the people that appear on "Crime Watch" it sells cheap CDs.
78 record exchange.what a shop to find those golden oldies! still looking for christmas dinner by tenesse ernie!
Only A few smallish shops on hillgate, such as double four records.
Double 4 Records (at the top end of Hillgate). It's quite a good shop but they
never have any change which means you always end up paying 12 pounds instead
of 11.99 or whatever. Sells indie stuff.
Small record shop on the hill going up to the market,(can't remember the name) opposite the excellent fishmongers. Sells rare Sinatra, big band, jazz, etc. Very knowledgeable lady.
Music Zone - the cheapest record store in the UK
Clubs (Dance Music) and Music Bars
sams bar on a wednesday = WICKED!
su is cool place to hang out wit mates n av a pint also.
The Guild Hall Stockport for northern soul music
I would suggest that your writer has got it wrong, as Stockport is much the same as any other town or city, Tell them to try Club Heaven and Hell in GRAND CENTRAL for a great night out, and the DJs are fab, especially in HELL AS THE BEAT GOES ON from 10pm to 2am. and well patrolled by security staff who keep the club clean. posted 20-11-2005
heaven and hell in grand central the usual hang about for 16-22 yr olds, although you get the odd 40 year old having a mid life crisis trying to kop off with a 15 year old, pure the ultimate dive full of drugs, cheap booze, hardcore dance choons and gay scallies (so i noticed last summer). White lion pub always good for a few before hiting the clubs, whetherspoons same as white lion but classier and harder to get into, brannigans a not-so-good version of heaven and hell, cobdens looks quite adulty, sams bar on the market, Bambooza good on a wednesday pay £9 and get a tiket that gets u free drinks all night. thats about it!
they are all around grand central, I'm sure they're ok if you can get to them without bein beaten up, havin your phone nicked or stepping on some slob with half a beer bottle embedded in his skull!
Ermm Heaven and smell if your a scall. Otherwise SU and Thatched house for Metalheads
Heaven & Hell - only go if you like having your mobile stolen.
Pure - only go if you like being punched.
heaven and hell
Hmmm... Just thought I'd update this section. Stockport is wicked at the weekend since HEAVEN and HELL came to town. The former "Volts" has been bought by Entrepreneurial Leisure, who own similar VERY SUCCESSFUL clubs in Leeds , Blackpool and Barnsley. More are planned soon. Check out the club!
Tel: 0161 476 2100 for info, or visit: www.heavenandhell.co.uk
DJs: Mat Stevens (www.djmatstevens.co.uk) Resident HELL
Keith Cunny Resident HEAVEN
Volts is now Heaven and Hell. The heaven part (upstairs stragely enough) still has the volts feel to it. I havent been downstairs but apparently its garage/house type stuff. I must add I am 20, and so old enough to go in!! (Although I did manage to get into Volts when I was a wee bit younger! Not a bad night out if you are with a good crowd.
*no* decent clubs in stockport, all crap garage ones, wheres the rock nights?!
Grand Central Sqaure, slap bang in the middle of the square. Bouncers are animals. Its also highly unusual if there isnt a mass rumble at 2am when all the dickheads come out looking for a fight. Other than that, its not that bad.
Sams Bar. Not a dance music club, but there is no trouble. This is probably the best spot for a night out in Stockport before heading to squares. (sad i know).
The SU! Extremely young crowd, closes at 11.30, but i have to mention it because
there isnt anything else to mention in a town where the nightlife isnt really jumping.
2nd wednesday of each month, Lapdancing at Pure!
PURE club on thursdays...class!
'Pure' on Fletcher Street, off St Petersgate is a good night out, and free entry on Friday Nights. Its open 'til 2am.
Pure... what can i say but fantastic on a thursday!
Aghhhhhhh! "Volts" has now closed. Where will the remarkably young patrons of this former club go now? Steps perhaps?
none you were correct on this one however there are some good clubs in manchester try the muttz nuttz cant tell you were it is as im always just taken there and taken home (pissed) but its 50p a drink all drinks and £4.50 entry only go on thurs or fri its gay days all other times indy or garage rooms on straight nights.
Apparently sells water from the Fountain of Youth if you go by the clientele - youngest looking eighteen year olds I've ever seen! And all wearing clothes by Ahmeds
See Kudos for Wigan
The nighlife in Stockport is absolutely shit. Even crappy volts has shut down, meaning all you get now is dickheads roaming grand central.
who wrote this shit volts has over 19's every sat for a reason you stupid pillocks I'm guessing your somewhat past the acceptable age of going into clubs and so accuse everyone else of being underage, I think the drop in center is more your cup of tea dear. don't stick your nose in wher is dosen't belong
Volts, pre-requisites: must be: under 15, IQ of 30 or less, wearing nothing or less (includes the lads apparently - disgusting thought considering the type of scruffy, tattooed, beer-bellied examples you see in the town)
Volts, Grand Central (was called Coco Savana's).
Live Music Venues
The Blue Cat Cafe, Shaw Road, Heaton Moor
absolutely nowhere i can think of but heaven and hell usually has some dj from galaxy or key 103.
There's a really cool spot in merseyway shops where a guy sings to sell the big issue!
SU!!! Has good bands so does teh thatched house after that its pot luck if you want to get really big just head into manchester
Some good old 60s-80s bands at The Witchwood, Ashton under Lyne.

the Armoury folk club is now at the Crown, heaton lane and has been for the last two years!Still run by Kieron & Mary Hartley and still singers, musicians and poets welcome.Great venue with loads of real ale! Tuesday nights at 8-30
MEN arena in manchester is nearest for bigger bands, for lesser known/popular/good bands, manchester carling apollo
Still Loads of good unplugged stuff April 2003- Red Bull Hillgate-Mondays trad folk and some big names!! Red Bull Thursday, unaccompanied folk, thats no guitars or anyfink.. Nursery Inn Tuesday, The Why Worry Club, the very best in singer songwriter. THe Crown under the Viaduct, Tuesdays folk club, loads of music other nights. The Thatched Tavern, loads of really loud music, including the Old Removal Men, plus some Indie stuff. The Market placeha gone a bit quiet but there's usually something on.
Stockport has loads of unplugged live music- unplugged stuff.. at Sams bar-packed singer songwriter, Bluecat cafe- singer songwriter, Bridge Inn -Classicly good folk music, Nursery Inn-South Manchesters top acoustic venue pulling in the best of the songwriters, Armoury Inn-Folk singaround stuff, and other venues sort of shifting about a bit. A change from the pub blues music of which there's also loads of really good stuff in The Bakers and around the Market place
the market place stockport for a variety of bands playing jazz/blues/pop/rock!
These are few and far between as well.
The Bakers Vaults in Stockports Market Place has LIVE JAZZ 6 nights a week. A Full Cajun Menu is available on Sunday and Tuesday evenings. The lunch time menu contains over 50 meals at "pub grub" prices. A Real Must!!!!
