The Stuff We Can't Fit In Somewhere Else

  • I thought the old saying was "Bollington born and Bollington bred, thick in th'arm and thick in th'ed." Fun times in the late 80s in the Poachers, and great to return from Australia and find little has changed - great atmosphere.
  • Bollington Children's Music Theatre Cheshire's unique performance group for the 7-14s. Friendly and informal - no auditions! Meets on Sunday afternoons at Bollington Arts Centre and stages two shows a year. Visit our website at http://www.marple55.freeserve.co.uk or phone 0161 427 2870 for details.
  • Plesase note that Bollington is not in Greater Manchester but is proud to be in Cheshire,about 3 miles from Macclesfield
  • You say about Bollington, an old mining town, surely you mean a cotton mill town The old saying about Bollington is: "A Derbyshire village in Cheshire, populated by Lancashire folk." Otherwise know as "Pob Town"
  • There are plenty of ghost stories about Bollington. Virtually all the locals know someone who's seen one. For instance, a ghost is regularly seen walking across one of the back rooms of the Shrigley Dyers mill at the bottom of Lord Street.
  • Record/games/comic/clothes shops/clubs: There aren't any! The newsagent on High Street does sell Spot the Dog comics though.
  • The Macclesfield and Bollington railway line, now taken up, has been turned into a lovely public footpath called the Middlewood Way.
  • The Macclesfield Canal flows through Bollington.
  • White Nancy does look like a nipple! It was put up to mark Britain's victory in the Crimean War and is repainted twice a year - paid for by a trust fund left behind by a dead landowner. In early '95 it was painted in the Union Jack to celebrate VE Day and stayed like that for six months.
  • I'm sitting in the Yucatan, Mexico, reading your delightful description of Bolls. Made me feel quite homesick for a pint and cream bun from the bread shop near the post office. Maybe you could add that it has been said that all Bollington adults could go to the pub at one time and there would still be room to sit down. Also some little knowhere place like Bolls having a mega group like Jaleo on. Wonderful to leave the sweltering Yucatan for a moment to wander along the tow path.
  • I live in Bollington. The best thing about it is that it has got loads of pubs, and it is really close to the Peak District National Park. It is a good place for mountain biking too.
    The local landmark is White Nancy, which looks like a big white tit on Kerridge Ridge.
    There are no bad things about Bollington, except for the pot holes and the tourists who come to drink all the beer.
    Other attractions in Bollington:
    • We've got a canal (great);
    • We've got loads of old mills;
    • Did I mention how many pubs we've got?
  • The Conservative club is host to a 'Gentleman's night' every so often, where ugly youngish women take all their clothes off and perform strange acts with bananas and anything else they can get their hands on.
  • Bollington was predominantly a textiles community; most of the housing was built by the Greggs to house their mill workers.
  • Bollington is absolutely the best place to live in the world. Live music at the Waggon & Horses in the food old days of Steve Martin was especially smashing, but I may be biased as I am one of the KP's (ask Mickayla at the vid shop if you don't know us), and my favourite pub is also the Poachers Inn, especially now it is not full of kiddies.
  • An old mining town? I thought mills were associated with the textile industry.
    White Nancy never used to be painted twice a year - what did the council do with the money? In 1983 intrepid members of the WKPFO painted it light green - to encourage the council to repaint it (or so it's said). In those days it was a sad graffiti covered relic. Repainting commenced soon after - the next Christmas it made a lovely pudding.

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Bollington. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Bollington.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
