Food

  • Mcdonalds, Cheap chicken shop just opened about a year ago, KFC, Kebabish, Hi-Tide (fish n chips), more other crap
  • usual... chinese, great fish + chip shop
  • Barkingside is full of fast food stores. arghhh.
  • Mc donadls,KFC, Pizza hut and probably more that are new as more developments sem to be going on there al;l the time.
  • Best grill & onur kebab are bothe brilliant kebabs. Abshwars is good for indian food so is birashwamys. Sharod by the bingo iz really nice. Never ever go to hi tide the food is awful but atlantic iz good.
  • RESTAURANT HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT ABSHAR PUNJABI CUISINE ITS A FAIRLY NEW RESTAURANT BUT TO ME OFFER THE BEST INDIAN FOOD I HAVE EVER TASTED . TRY IT YOU WONT BE DESAPOINTED
  • Onur Kebab house.. best kebabs i've eaten. Situated opposite swimming pool.
  • Mcdonalds
  • The new cheesecake shop is wonderful, but no good for my diet!!
  • Mostly overpriced crap but Ali's and Renzo's do take away. The BHANGRA is good quality but pricey for what you get. The best take-away curry is from the SHAROD (next to Gala Bingo)
  • Hi-Tide Fish & Chip restaurant and take-away is excellent. Probably the best in London. Old China Chinese restaurant is very good. Sharods is a nice Indian restaurant.
  • The hi-tide fish & chip restaraunt is one of the finest around, if your in the area give it a visit you won't be dissapointed.
  • Try Yossie Bagels - yummy cakes and bagels
  • the best indian restaurant is actually the Monsoon, its not exactly Barkingside but it is only up the road, barkingside end of new north road, its cheap, the best food, home delivery service.
  • MacDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken, fish & chip shops, Onur Kebab shop, etc
  • Birshwamys is one of the best Indian Restaurants around. Not cheap.
  • THe Doctor Johnson, in Longwood Gardens, has good basic food cheaply. However the beers are expensive. You can't win! THe best place, and the authentic place, is RENZO's, in the High Street, near to Rosi's Ice Cream Parlour. RENZO does really nice Pizzas and Pastas, freshly cooked. THere is also a delivery service. Unfortunately there are many other "fast" food outlets springing up, which peple seem to prefer.
  • Also no town would be seen dead in the east end without a fruit and veg market stall.
  • An excellent pie and mash shop is in the High Street and is well worth the visit.
  • KFC is also here but is not as busy as Maccy D's.
  • A new kebab shop has opened recently but I have moved away now so do not know what quality the kebabs.
  • As usual in most towns of its size nowadays, McDonalds makes its appearance and is nearly alays busy especially at lunchtimes, full of the local school kids
  • Radway is about eight miles north west of Banbury, immediately below Edgehill (as in major battle in the Civil War 1642). Best way from Banbury is out on the Stratford road. By the way it's also 20 minutes from Leamington/Warwick and Stratford.

Pubs

  • Racist Pub near mcdonalds dnt like and serve ethnics in there. Pub near swimming pool bit more leanient with etnics.
  • chequers is enjoyable
  • The Maypole had first drink in there an met Christine Jarvis where is she now?
  • There are two pubs, placed in such fab places , at either end of the highstreet.you could go shopping then go for a meal and a drink with friends. if you live on fullwell you can go to the one at that side of the high street is you cannot be botherd to go to the other one and vise versa if you live in clayhall avenue or along that way.
  • Real problems in the past year (2001) at the New Fairlop Oak. Throughout the year but things really deteriorated from about July onwards. The place is falling apart: they can;'t keep regular staff, there's no sense of welcome of cameraderie now; the food is a running joke with parts of one's meal regular unavailable leading you to reorder something else (that, ten minutes later, you find is no longer available) - and usually a 30-45 minutes wait. No longer have a Specials Board for food. Recently dropped the Sunday Roasts (hence a noticable exodus of former regulars). Guest Beers are rarely all available at the same time. Often peopled by loud-mouthed (sorry about this) builders who frequent the place and pollute it with their filthy (and I do mean Really filthy) language that nobody on the staff really cares to stop. New Manager apparently - does he have an attitude problem or is he just out of his depth? Make your own decisions.....Oh, and if you want to avoid any drugs transactions in the Barkingside area, you know where to stay away from (despite having had a - temporarily effective - police drugs bust earlier in the year...but it's back to normal now, it would appear). What else can one say? A 'Must' to avoid?
  • I have heard from a very good source that "Ye Olde Investigator" is soon to shut down, refurbed and rise again lik a "Phoenix from the Flames" as "The Chequers!"
  • Fairlop Oak a Witherspoon pub - cheap beer and not bad food as long as you don't expect Egon Ronay's standards. Good place to meet up before going onto somewhere else. Although if you do get out of hand, even minor offences ie. going behind the bar to serve yourself, be prepared to be barred. I personally have a theory that they have a score board behind the bar and are competing to see who can eject the most customers. Still not a bad drinking hole.
  • The val!!!
  • The licence for the Old Investigator is up for sale - lobby Wetherspoons to take it over.
  • The Fairlop Oak, um don't laugh in here you might get told off. Also be prepared to be chucked at about 30 seconds after 11.00 All the clientele are mad! The Chequers (please don't ever call it "Ye Olde Investigator") used to be the place. I noticed people moaning about it but they were probably the speccy students who used to sit on the floor and drink one coke all night! The KGV up the road is nice and friendly now though! If you feel anyway depressed or suicidal don't even think about going in the "Dr Johnson" 'cause that will push you over the edge!
  • Fairlop oak is cheap but has about as much atmosphere as a morgue.
  • Avergage, although the Old Investigator is always empty
  • I must say the Fairlop Oak is a great pub, unlike the investigator
  • The Dr Johnson is a great place to go if you have children, expecially in the summer, loads of b-b-qs
  • The Fairlop Oak near the roundabout. Good food and not too expensive. Ye Olde Investigator (opposite the one and only MacDonalds). A crap name and it is still known locally as "The Chequers".
  • chequers and the fairlop oak were the pubs others close were the dr johnson and the unicorn
  • Wetherspoons, good for cheap beer, no music, recently extended, no late drinking. Ye Olde Investigator, a bit of a rough pub, only go there if you want your face re-arranged. What was wrong with the "Checkers"?
  • Ye Olde Investigator next to Sainsbury's (used to be called Chequers) The Fairlop Oak by Fullwell Cross
  • Fairlop Oak has plenty of seating and is having a new extension to its food area The Old Investigator is more local and hard with pool tables available.
  • Pub at the bottom of the High Street used to be called The Chequers, has now been renovated and renamed The Old Investigator - a bog standard theme pub where the focus is on Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles etc. Pretty naff really. At the other end of the High Street is the Fairlop Oak, which is better, but full of dead hard east end types (young and old).
  • The "Fairlop" is a Wetherspoons, excellent.
  • THe New FairlopOak, a Wetherspoon, is on the roundabout, opposite the Library. No music, no frills. good foord but a bit ar5tificial and a tad expensive, but the drinks are cheap. Sue and Steve the managers are very good.
  • Not as many as most towns and most people go elsewhere, usually to Hainault or Gants Hill, I can't recall the names of the pubs in the town so if anyone can help me it sure would be appreciated.

Cafes and Coffee Shops

  • the pie and mash shop is alright. rossi's is delicious but cold. greggs has good service.
  • There has been a new cafe called cafe rose which is the place to go for a rich coffee.
  • Renzo's had closed down but in its place is Caffe Rose (sic). Same sort of Italian-based fare. Comparatively very expensive, but the food is good. Cafe at 104 - Excellent food reasonably priced. Superb winebar-type decor. The best chille in town. Only problem is they're only open from about 9.30am - 4pm Monday thru Saturday only.
  • Renzo's in Barkingside is no more - does anyone know what its replacement is like?
  • MARINO's (ak.a. Ali's)is excellent - worth it for the Kitchen Cabaret REMZO's PIZZA has tables outside in summer
  • I can't believe that Marino's hasn't got a mention yet! The archetypal greasy spoon with a mad owner who shouts at everyone. Cheap grub that is always tasty.
  • Cafe 104 is very good I hear

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Barkingside. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Barkingside.
