Chiswick, Greater London Triumphs and Tragedies

* Important Note: all entries in the Knowhere Guide are the opinions of its users. see What is Knowhere for more info about the Guide.

Favourite Building

  • 56 St Mary's Grove, the best house in all of Chiswick. And that round cavelike brick thing on Grove Park Road
  • The Roman Catholic church "St Michael and All Saints" near Turnham Green Statition has a nice spire on top.
  • The wierd Labour Party Campaign HQ in CHiswick High Road. The Chiswick library nice staff.
  • St Nicholas' Church, it's a great old building. Plus it's in an area known as sluts yard :-)
  • Chiswick House & the old long demolished Chiswick Empire
  • ST NICHOLAS CHURCH
  • The big church up the top end.
  • My old family house [we all moved out of the area recently boo hoo]
  • Chiswick House - very grand old building.
  • The Old Cinema is nice if a bit twee.
  • Fullers Brewery The BSI building
  • The houses in Bedford Park, off The Avenue
  • The Fire Station

Demolish It Now Building

  • the Sports Hall at CCS cos i hated PE. The scary mannequin factory by the railway bridge near Gordon Road. There are bits of bodies in the window. The ex-park keepers cottage in chiswick park
  • The little Conservative HQ down some steps further up. The incense ponging huge Catholic Church opposite Sainsburys which blocks the traffic every time a Mass comes out!
  • Nimrod's House
  • barwick house acton cum on its about time!
  • barwick house acton strange people live there! or hang about nearby???
  • Both corners of Duke Road = not an improvement on previous!!!!
  • Mortimer and Bennet food shop Turnham green Terrace.
  • Health Centre
  • The Fire Station - very ugly building in the middle of a lovely residential area
  • The big blue and white office block across the road from Kew Green Station
  • The A4 (it's V noisey)
  • big black glass prick thing
  • BSI Tower (coz I can see it from the sitting room window - nice view!)

The Best Things

  • Lots of lovely parks, clean safe streets, the river, very nice place to live
  • crime rate
  • Chiswick has the nicest atmosphere of any london suberb. People are friendly and there is so much greenery.
  • People, general atmosphere.
  • Quiet easy going cosy
  • Lots of young single mothers displaying their assets in the summer
  • Wonderful, marvellous place to live [can you tell I miss it?]
  • The restaurants and atmosphere in evenings and weekends. The relaxed locals.
  • Adamou grocers on Chiswick High Road
  • The food
  • People have respect for one another. It's always a joy to walk down the street without fear of getting knived. River Thames (esp in Summer). High Road (all year round). Best Things are numerous.

The Worst Things

  • The traffic calming measures in Hartington Road, locally known as 'lunacy lane' The increase in grafitti in the last year or so.
  • Peeps from kensington getting stabbed on my turf.
  • the house prices are insane!
  • crime rate
  • The A4 Road. I live on Hogarths Roundabout and it really stinks!
  • With house prices rising all the time unfortunately the "yuppies" have now moved in, the "oh how lovely to see you darling" ones!!!!
  • NOWHERE TO DRINK LATE
  • Mortimer and Bennet Food shop.Turnham Green Terrace. The service in here is "funny".There is always a tense atmosphere "in the air"from the "staff".Maybe something do with the high prices like Nougat bars @ £10 each. The staff do not seem to like helping customers at all(for instance rudely refusing to weigh vegetables)and appear cross if people do not buy anything. Some of the other customers are a bit "off"too. One day it all exploded in a major hooha with The proprietor using sexual swear words at a customer. The self declared odd greengrocer next door m&c (quoted as saying "we sell queer gear here"joined in with physical threats and it all became quite an argy bargy.I prefer Harrods so much "cooler".
  • When I moved away [financial reasons]
  • The Piccadily line no longer stops at Turnham Green station. Recently some pubs have been getting some very rough patrons. Obviously not locals!
  • Peoples attitude. Going shopping is like Destruction Derby in Sainsburys. Parking is terrible. The whole area is to become a Resident Only Parking" area soon.
  • The worst thing is that there are far too many pizza-pasta places.
  • Pretty much dead after 11pm
  • posh buggies

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Chiswick. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Chiswick.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
