Barrow!
Jade Fountain serves up great food, still busy after many of years, but a bit pricey though.
THE BEST chippy in the world is in Ulverston !!! It's called The Chippy Bank (or to locals The Chippy Wank) ... house special is chips and gravey on a tray with scraps on top !!!! ... and for the best Pie (apart from my hairy one!) is Bennet's pie shop on Soutergate .. the meat and tattie are heaven !!
You can't beat the Chippy Bank.
The only Indian restaurant is the Momotaj. Service is good, but the food isn't great. They can cook great naan bread, but nothing else is really authentic.
Most famous chip-shop used to be the Chippy Bank, is it still going?
Best restaurant, John Tovey (BBC2 chef) owns the Bay Horse
http://www.furness.co.uk/bayhorse It's in the Michelin Guide.
Booths supermarket on the outskirts of town and Walter Wilsons at 'The Gill'
Pubs
hmmmmm, read your list, it says, the grapes ( the old horse and groom) which is actually the old grapes as it was also called the grapes before it was called the horse and groom.........somebody other than me must be old enough to remember, i think it closed before i was even old enough to go under age drinking
Ulverston has the highest ratio of pubs to popultaion. At one time there were 52 drinking establishments in the Hartleys Brewery town.
Rose and Crown pull a great pint of real ale, and The King's Head is fab in the summer as it has it's own bowling green out back !! .. and you can skin up with no hassleout there ! Wine Bar on King St has a right niceselection of wines but the cocktails are a bag of shit .. don't waste you money on 'em !
Every other building in Ulverston is a pub, nice beer garden at the King's Head in Queen Street, Kings Cafe, wine bar same street is good too and has some wacky silver chairs.
The Bay Horse, The Devonshire, The Lancastrian,
Loads of town centre pubs here with 'unique atmosphere' -some worthy of a mention are - The Sun, The Farmers, Piel Castle, Rose and Crown, The Grapes (The old Horse and Groom), The Kings Head, The Globe
Cafes and Coffee Shops
this aint Amsterdam but one or two of the little places are quite cool , hicksies on market street provide excellent take away pies and hot sandwiches , while at nighttime try the chippy bank for chips or the continental for perfect fried fish .
Hot Mango is great. Really good food that's not too expensive.
deganis' used to do the best iced drinks in town they were cool
Brilliant new cafe recently opened in Ulverston called "The Hot Mango Cafe", It's on King Street and it really is wonderful. Lots of veggie meals and really good cappucino
