Food
Where the sewing shop used to be, there is now a fantastic Thai restaurant. It can be a bit pricey, but the lunch menu is actually quite a bargain for the quality of food. The mumtaz has died a bit, the windows are darkened, and noone appears to be patronising it. I know it's still open, but a couple of years ago, it started to go a bit down-market, and now I'm not sure if anyone goes there anymore.
Hing Tai, Frying Machine
frying machine on high street offers good quality takeaways at reasonanble prices.
An attractive, traditional, eye catching shop that sells succulent, freshly boiled ham and a huge selection of interesting and unusual food stuffs is 'Riddifords'Grocery shop. Well worth a visit, I garantee you will be tempted, I always am!
The Mexican restaurant has closed and reopened as a chinese. The food is superb if a little pricey, and the service can be a bir spotty but still the best local eating place.
Thornbury is getting better in a culinary sense. The best eat-in restaurant is the Mumtaz (St. Mary's Centre) which does excellent Indian Cuisine. There is also the Mogul Tandorri (High Street) which is also highly recommended, if a bit pricey. Thornbury also now has a Mexican restaurant which I haven't been to yet but I am told it is very good. Take-aways include the Thornbury Chinese Take-away (Pullins Lane) which does excellent curry and chips and post drinking fodder. For Fish and chips, try the Frying Machine which is good, if a little expensive. For those who want to poison your bodies with the stuff, there is a Kebab van which can be found in the High Street each night.
Pubs
The Knot of Rope has got new "family" management, very helfpul and friendly indeed and servce great food and good prices. On the question of food, the Wheatsheaf also serve good food, a Curry night on a Wednesday. Sadly I am never sure at a weekend or daytime hours when or IF this pub is open as I have been many times and found it shut... and no notice to sday when it is open ..the landlord can be a bit "moody" and miserable but the guest beers are good
Just an anonymous message from a drinker of the Royal Gorge that is unhappy to be called a drunken yob! The people that drink there are upstanding members of a severly boring town and your site is making us out to be brainless violent morons. P.S. anyone disagrees and Ill kick their heads in!
The Wheatsheaf is for us wrinklies only
Black Horse on Grovesend Rd by the BP garage is a very nice pub now. never any trouble there unlike up town. Knot of rope is good for warm beer with lots of head and they don't even bother to fill it up to the top. still a good pub though. white lion is excellent. steer cleer of the barell and the swan to avoid trouble. just keep an eye out up town and you will be fine.
The Swan in the high st... what a place... that's where I learnt all I needed to about life... go there and keep it real !
Got called a dude by the bar man in the barrell once!
The White Lion has just been refurbished and does the best beer and pub grub in the town, and it has a no children policy... GREAT!
Thornbury can be a bit insular and this is particularly true about its pubs, whose clientele don't particular welcome strangers. The best pub in Thornbury is the Knot of Rope on the High Street. Try to go here unless you are over 40 or you are a thug. If you are in these two groups, there are plenty of establishments for you. For the over 40's, there is the Wheatsheaf. For any stupid and incredibly ignorant thugs among you, the Royal George or the Plough are the place for you. If you are a teenager, go to the Swan or the Barrel (both Town centre). Recently, the Swan had a playgroup added for its regular customers. The only other bearable pub for those under 40, of drinking age and of sound mind is the Black Horse on Grovesend Road. Even here, avoid the bar with the pool tables as youu get some complete morons here.
Cafes and Coffee Shops
Shelly's Cafe 32-the only place to go
shelly's cafe is now a more up market cafe called Cafe32. its very good there.
The mill house is excellent!
Thousands. The Coffee Shos in Heritage (High Street) does good coffee and cakes. Those into the full cholesterol experience should head for Shelly's Cafe (just off St Mary's centre), a cheap but cheerful Greasy Spoon cafe
