Brixham, Devon Triumphs and Tragedies

* Important Note: all entries in the Knowhere Guide are the opinions of its users. see What is Knowhere for more info about the Guide.

Favourite Building

  • YE OLde Coffin House King Street Brixham Devon
  • The baptist church in fore street looks great. The whole harbour surround with the houses tumbling over each other.
  • black house. soposedly haunted and no one ever lives in it. why is a mystery......
  • The Blue Anchor - Harbourside -
  • Berry Head Hotel
  • Berry Head hotel is cool, so is the Fort at Berry Head. All of the houses round the harbour are impressive too.

Demolish It Now Building

  • The old car park (whoops, its been knocked down already.) That ugly expanse of paved nothing by the bus station - at least do something with it, like a decent market. (At least it is now being used as a temporary car park.)
  • Too late its gone, bye bye multi storey car park
  • The multi story carpark. So ugly, so rusty, so knackered.
  • rooftops retaurant and flats as DAMN its ugly.........(and they had a male stripper an no one told me!)
  • The main carpark in the centre of town! A concrete monostrosity, built in the 60's as a temporary measure but still standing!!
  • The Town Square. It looked so good on paper, but it's just a wind swept concrete wasteland. The only people who used it were skaters, but they got banned because 'it's for everyone.' Yeah right, everyone except skaters. So now noone uses it.
  • it's got to be the 'Seaworld' building right by the harbour. (more life in your garden pond).
  • The town centre car park
  • The hideous MIDAS development which has totally RUINED BRIXHAM. Why did the Brixham people Let it get Built??? They tried it in SHALDON !!!
  • The entire Town Square and related traffic problems
  • The Police Station. (Really! it's horrible 60s)

The Best Things

  • Relaxed place to live, especially in winter. Mild climate. People actually pay good money to visit Brixham, so it can't be that bad.
  • Coffin house Brixham showcase king/fore street harbourside Brixham showcase 2 coffin house Commotions, bring the past alive
  • new year! and the summer cos i get to wear skimpy outfits........ walking the coast paths and hanging out in the spoons
  • Bon Bon Sweet shop. Friendly, Helpful, and generally present.
  • The great mugs of coffee plus brandy that you could get on the boat trip from Brixham to Dartmouth MMMMMMMM :) worth staying on the boat all day until yuo finally keel over LOL
  • A Quaff and Yarn down at The Blue Anchor, on the Harbour.
  • The Vibe
  • Generally friendly, great beachs, great countryside. Quiet, but you can go out in Torquay to go off. Couple of secret surfing spots. Secret Raves at Seven Quarries. (ask someone) New Years Eve. Sod Trafalger Square, this place goes off. Wear fancy dress.

The Worst Things

  • 1) Parking a) Parking "Hitlers" who become apoplectic if you park outside their house, but are happy to park outside everyone elses. b) Smartarses who will jam their 6ft 4x4 into a 5ft parking space; OK, clever if you can do it, except it usually ends up boxing everyone else in. c) Likewise, idiots who seem able to make a couple of Mini Metros fill an entire street. d) People who try to avoid double yellow lines by parking on the footpath. 2) The seagulls, and the idiot tourists who insist on feeding them. 3) suicidal tourists who wander aimlessly across the road in front of oncoming traffic. 4) Rip off water rates
  • All the pretty houses round the harbour are empty most of the year, as they're all second homes, leaving the locals priced out. Absoleutly, honestly, nothing to do in winter. The local council is stuck in a 50's time warp and will allow nothing interesting to happen here ever. Unless you're an oap, and then you can have whatever you like. Bowling greens? Two of 'em. Skate parks? By the time it's happened, your future kids might be able to use it. Crap wages. Everyone leaves. If you can spell Brixham, you leave, giving the place an average age of 60 at least. Give it another 20 years they'll be nothing left but second home owners.
  • LOCAL PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! these women are fat, stupid and DDDAAAMMMNN!!!!!! they is ugly! and they are all jelous of me.....need i say more?
  • Saxty`s Bistro at the harbour side. Looks Tempting, nice menu. However, the food consists of Aunt bessie`s frozen veg and Potatoes, and even that can`t be cooked properly. And If you complain to the owner, she offers the same item you complained about back, bite`s your head off, and insists you pay full price despite risking life and limb and food poisoning.
  • Rich (relatively) people from upcountry who 'fall in love with the place' and push house prices up so high that us who were born and grew up here can't afford to stay. They'll probably bugger off again when it's 'not the same anymore'. Idiots. Pretty closely related is the crap rates of pay for working here. Apparrently if you have a 'quality of life' then you don't need so much money to live on.
  • The locals with the biggest chips on shoulder attitude i've ever seen
  • Also Brixham and torbay are very 'clicky' (prone to fights).
  • Ugly women and drunken fisherman. Noisy seagulls
  • The New Surgery with no parking - Very patient focussed practice manager to make this decision on behalf of the patients - I think not....!
  • Pissed fishermen. Smell of fish. Gets boring, no clubs, pubs all shut at 11. Usual small town problems. Ignorant tourists.

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Brixham. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Brixham.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
