Food

  • Weel Kath the landlady of the Foords use to put anice spread on a saturday lunchtime ...but a certain Divi's misses kept pinching all the food ... and none of the locals were able to get amouth ful so Kath has now stopped the divi lunchtime club for a while .... why not ban them Kath!!!
  • Kath the landlady of the Foords does a mean buffet for her regular clientele and often has a good range of free cooked food on a saturday for "her boys". However it has been known for a certain divis wife to scoff all the food or take it home in plastic bags. No one touches teh food after she has been prodding it tho !!!
  • Try Lavingtons - what a breakfast and good food and drinks all day
  • The many chip shops
  • The fish and chip shops.
  • new york chicken just opened another takeaway that is owned by iraqs
  • Churchills is the best chippy in filey - try the haddock. talk to sue - lovely woman.
  • The Bella Italia was brilliant - really friendly, lots of wine ..... ahhhh yum.
  • San Marco (Filey) is the best resaurant of all time. The service is excellent and the food is outstanding, go there for the ultimate in gastronomical pleasure.
  • Any left over food from any function ... divi and his equally brainless wife will take it home for their "tea"
  • Unicorn cafe in filey, now renamed churchills, has proved to itself and all its customers that transformations are possible. The new owners have a lot to be proud of, they turned the restaurant around and offers the best, yet the cheapest, plate of fish and chips in town, Brown room will have to settle for second best. After just two years in a new trade, the staff and owners have come a long way, gaining qualifications and reccommendations. Try it once - and you'll never go anywhere else!
  • CHURCHILLS chippy in Union Street serve the biggest and tastiest piece of haddock in the town. Well worth a visit.
  • Who ever said that Bob the Butcher makes good pies needs his senses testing. His pork pies are passable but the others are rubbish.
  • we need McDonalds!!!!!
  • Jolly Fat Bastard's........They make i mean Chicken and Stuffing sandwichP
  • The Chinese and Indian.
  • dont go to carlines bakery up at the brigg shopping centre if your a wessie the old fat women there will totaly ignore you! new kam san used to be good for chicken currys, gone to seed now though.
  • Bensons still hold the champion crap fish and chip shop ... anyone who buys from there need a cast iron stomach
  • The Chinese is o.k. in winter in the summer they palm you off with crap. Inghams chippy on Bellvue street gives you terrible indigestion.
  • If I were you I'd get something out of the freezer when you get home. I remember when we used to go round the back of Carlines Bakery on a Saturday morning having left Belle Vue and buy Cornish Pastys from the Baker. That was before Alabama opened.
  • Victoria Court, The Park when it was a proper restaurant, Royal parade Cafe in summer, Dickie Bees
  • only a few flagging chippy's that sell cold and half cooked stuff
  • No Macdonalds, burger King, KFC, Pizza Hut, probally due to all those conservative geriatric knobs in the conservative club
  • The indian allows you to take your own booze in
  • Bob the Butcher near Kwik Save next to fruit shop .... he makes lovely pies well worth a visit
  • Downcliffe House was the only proper 'class' place for a bit. Don't know what it's like now. You could get a good waffle from next to Corrigans amusements. Bella Italia for pizzas.
  • The Brown room is King! Fantastic fish & chips, beating all rivals by miles.
  • the unicorn fish shop and cafe is under new ownership at last. locals and visitors alike will miss the two ugly sisters staring at them as they walk by and go into the brown room next door for some decent fish and chips. they must have frightened many a prospective customer away with their horrible faces! good luck to the new owners.
  • The Brown Room. Without a doubt the best chippy in Filey. Mind you if you want chips in town after 7:00pm then you're stuck with Queen Street chippy. Ask to see Charlie.
  • Bella Italia is the most gorgeous pizza place ever, YUM Plans to open a restaurant next to it in 2000. I'm looking forward to that! Curry place gorgeous, but took ages to open as the older councillors didnt want the smell.... why????? in a town smelling of grease from the chippy's
  • New Kam San (not bad Chinese), Filey Tandoori(very good indian scoff), Queen Street Fisheries(the best fish n chips in town), Bella Italia(try the special garlic bread), Dickie Bees, Browns, Unicorn, Alabamas
  • The corner, Bella italia,

Pubs

  • The Grapes Inn, QUEEN STREET - the oldest street in Filey. Under new tenancy. Clean, fresh, welcoming and still retaining tradition offers tasteful entertainment to include Filey Fishermen Harmony Group, Chris & Mark Peters (a father and son duo well worth listening to), Dave Masters or Valentine as was previously known and more recent "Keepers Fold" a folk duo who were part of the Filey Folk Festival in July 2005 and were asked to return to The Grapes just last weekend where they proved to be a welcoming special treat for one and all. They will also be singing us into the New Year. The Grapes has cast out its previous reputation of being a noisy, loutish pub to rise above and provide locals and visitors alike with a pleasant visit or stay in their very comfortable bedrooms with ensuite shower & toilets. Future plans include Sunday lunches, all day menu, afternoon teas and supper evenings all with homemade fare produced by Mark & Maureen who are your hosts. Just a few finishing touches required and all will be underway. The Grapes is a community pub, committed to its local environment and providing fund raising functions to help all charitable groups wherever possible. Well worth a visit.
  • been out of town for a week. have i missed anything at the big buccer?
  • BONHOMMES THE ONLY PUB IN FILEY IN THE GOOD BEER GUIDE, BRILLIANT PINT, ATMOSHERE IS FANTASTIC , WELL WIRTH A VISIT, QUIZ SUNDAYS AND TUESDAY EVENINGS 9PM SATURDAY AFTERNOON QUIZ IS ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT.
  • The Imps, by far the best pub in the town at this moment in time. Always good for a tea-time session and quality on a weekend. Good booze, good crowd, top landlady!
  • The Bucc - Their starting up a new program on TV based on CAN'T COOK, WON'T COOK its called CAN'T PULL A PINT (Janice), WON'T PULL A PINT (Colin). ZORRO
  • Tuns is always good for a laugh, but if you bump into a fat bastard called Adrian Lee, prey he's not drunk, doing his comedy act or holds a grudge against you. If you fill all these categories avoid him wherever you find the man, resistance is futile. The Imperial has a nice quiet pint, unfotunately this is because it's usually empty and is run by a really nasty witchywoman who hates wezzies like me.
  • The buccaneer is the only place were young people can have a drink without getting abused by old people or getting looked at like you've crawled out of a pile of shit. This wont last forever though as the elery have never lost a turf war in the history of filey and will not rest untill every young person is out of the pubs.
  • For Sale Pool Table slightly sags in the middle, could do with recovering but perfectly workable. Contact The Landlady Crown Hotel , Filey
  • Many a nice chap and gal visit the Foords pub A fortnightly domino club is in operation here ....watchout for the titerlating conversations and cow eyes made between certain folk!! We hear that the local landlord garry of the foords now dons an apron and white cap serves tea in china cups to his regular "ladies" who frequent the bar area each morning for tea and biccys...WHAT NEXT!!!
  • THE GRAPES QUEEN STREET IS A ACE PUB BUT HAS NEVER BEEN THE SAME SINCE LYNN & BIG AL LEFT!! NOW THEY NEW HOW TO DO A GOOD BREAKFAST (WELL AL WAS A FOOD EXPERT) AND YOU COULD ALWAYS HAVE A GOOD NIGHT OUT IN THERE ESPECIALLY WHEN IT WAS A WEDDING , BIRTHDAY, CHRISTENING OR EVEN FUNERAL!!!! THE ONLY PROBLEM WAS MOANING F*CKING SID NEXT DOOR! WHY MOVE NEXT TO A PUB IF YOU DONT LIKE NOISE???? GET A LIFE SID
  • The Knowhere site has a new significance now that the Buccaneer is doing double spirits for £1 a shot coupled with a bottle of Becks for £1-10 a truly mind numbing afternoon can be had for only a small portion of your Giro.
  • The Three Tunns. They've refused to serve many a miner. Especially in the 70s and 80s when they were on strike.
  • The Three Tunns. Best pub, best ale, most cheery bar staff; They have the faces that can strip paint! One look from one of them can sober a man up in an instant.
  • How come certain new requlars get tea served to them in the Foords??? Pubs serve beer not dainty china cups of tea!!!
  • Saw the Codgers at the CROWN the other night. MASSIVE.
  • who ever wrote that about Angela and old frosty u are the ones that wanna grow up becoz sue(his lovely wife U AVE TO BE HAVING A LAUGH)doesn't even want him so before u write anything else find out somemore infomation before u but in will you.How sad can you get u are one bog looser who ever wrote it.
  • In the update I submitted yesterday I said Jesters was overpriced and the staff were long faced. Please change it from 'jesters' to 'SPENCERS'
  • Jesters at Primrose valley. There prices are obscene and the bar staff are misserable. Try the Royal Oak across the main road. Better class of people, better beer and good prices
  • The Crown-Queen Street FILEY. An amazing turnaround for another doomed Filey watering hole. A BIG well done to JOSIE and family for giving us a freindly, down to earth local. Thanx from all your trusty regulars keep up the good work (and keep an eye on Wildy).
  • the grapes run by the worls fattest man! god help us all!
  • The Grapes- this allows many a young patron in.
  • the belle vue the best pub for food by far
  • the belle vue is worth a visit now it has changed hands again cheapest beer in town and its a good pint
  • the beer at teh foords is still warm and tastes not very nice still .. who is cleaning the pumps these days ???
  • The Vaults and Bonhommes are the friendliest. The owners of the Top House need to know that summer custom is driven away by the insulting comments and abuse flung at tourisists by a horrible fat girl who is married to someone in a group that plays there regularly.
  • If you want to ANYTHING about horses then go into the star pub in Filey and ask old Frosty!!!! (He thinks he knows everything about them)
  • The Star, The Imps, The Tuns (When Lex had it)
  • The mecca of filey has too be the belle vue. This high class venue attracts all of the filey clubbers, a must for a friday, saturday, new years, sixteenth birthdays and all other special occasions.
  • yo i'll second the point about the miserable stuck up bitch at the snooker club ginger freak needs bringing down a peg or two
  • the snooker club is always worth a visit, there is usually someone on hand to give advise on dhss queries and help with form filling. the landlady eats children for breakfast.
  • Well quite a few are half decent for a Pint ... Tuns ... pity about the Landlord....Foords..again pity about the dissappearing landlord but his misses is OK... Bon Hommes ..cheap spirits.....the Star....crap furniture but the beer is ok too Top HOuse ... like a bomb site and should be demolished Snooker Club... can get anything you want there from the locals
  • Go and see Sam at the Star ..but dont smile at her if she has PMT
  • Visit the local village idiot found every day in the Foords .. he wears a flat cap and many layers of coats and body warmers ..summer and winter ..
  • GOD I HATE VINCE,THE MISERABLE,VUNERABLE, WANNABE COP.OUT COCKED AND OUT WITTED BY THE ONLY DARK HAIRED PRINCE AMONGST BARMAN IN FILEY WITH ANYTHING ENCROACHING ON TALENT,PENIS OR WIT, HE'S BEEN KNOCKED BACK ANY WAY BECAUSE HIS TRUNCHEON IS UNDER SIZE. DOBO MOFO!! BURN BABY BURN HA HA HA!!!!!
  • The Imps, Foords, Grapes, Belle Vue. Got to the Royal Crescent Vaults for a laugh.
  • Patchy
  • the grapes, queen street. one pub to definately avoid. a small and pokey dump. has the naffest entertainment on a weekend in the whole of yorkshire. if you want a quite drink forget it, the noise level from the turns, is that loud and distorted you will proberbly leave the building stone deaf. the brain dead landlord, seems hell bent on upsetting every resident on queen street, with his noise pollution.
  • Tophouse (The Station) Brill Pub shame about the Landlady
  • STATION HOTEL.HOME OF THE MIGHTY CODGERS AND THE AWESOME JOHN HEATON.
  • Station(top house) Grapes, Crown, Star, Belle Vue(has late licence and a dance floor, but never in a million years is it a 'dance club') Bonne Hommes, The Vaults, Three Tuns, Imperial, Coble Landing Bar, Snooker Club, Grand Social Club, White Lodge Hotel,
  • Station Hotel (also called top house), The Grapes, The Crown, The Foords, The Coble Landing Bar, The Imperial, The Star, The Three Tuns, The Belle Vue, Bonhommes, The grand Social club

Cafes and Coffee Shops

  • what does any one think of dixons cafe and dixons its a bit of a dive, all the towns scruffs go there to drink the well brewed tea and set the world to rights. the staff in general could do with a good clean as well as the cafe.
  • Country Park cafe is good for sandwiches
  • The Pines on Hope Street, great steak pie at only £2.95!
  • Bunters has now become Lavingtons and the new company policy appears to be open every day, clean and tidy and good food- why can't people carry on the old ways
  • Lavingtons has replaced Bunters and has had the novel idea of actually opening, This coupled with serving good food means a good addition to Filey eating places
  • bakers snacks on beach hez a misrable cunt that owns it never smiles
  • Glen Gardens?? (That won't count because it is run by kids in the summer, and the food is chewy) I would recommend Cooplands, very tasty and perfectly made.
  • Yes, what Filey DEFINITELY needs is an Amsterdam-style coffee shop! Then I'd move back!
  • The Bronte Vinery is the cheapest and best cafe for children and families. Avoid the cafe up at the Brigg shopping complex the one with Gaming machines next to the flower shop. The toilets are disgusting so what does that say about their kitchen?
  • BAKERS SNACK BAR ON THE COBLE LANDING ANOTHER OF BIG ADIES HAUNTS COME ON DOWN IF YOU THINK YOU CAN STAND IT MEET GADGET,CRAWFORD AND THE REST OF THE GANG DONT COME IN UNLESS YOUR WELL PREPARED FOR THE ABUSE FROM THE BIG LAD
  • cheap tea and cracked cups go down a treat here
  • well if you like your tea in chipped cups or plastic cups ... a few cafes will gladly help you
  • Avoid pension day in many a cafe in Filey... you will get run over with zimmer frames and wheelchairs
  • Go to Dixons on west ave at about 11am and get your ankles wrapped with all the shopping trolleys that the geriatric shoppers use when catching up on the loocal gossip
  • The one on the seafront which everyone vandalises all winter whilst its closed.
  • errr No errr
  • There is the Sun Lounge, but this has now changed hands, and so the lovely home made sausage rolls they used to do are no longer available.
  • One of the most unusual cafes I have ever seen is Billy Bunter's on West Avenue. It's full of old posters dating back from the 19th Century, right through to the swingin' sixties. It's also the place where walkers sign-in when they've finished the Cleveland Way. The long-haired hippy guy who owns the cafe is really chatty and fun. The food too is great and they cater for vegetarians.
  • Dixons, Albion Cafe, Victorian Tea Rooms, Country Car Park None of these are 'Coffee Shops' in the Amsterdam sense though which is a shame as Filey is crying out for something like that. (well.......I am!) ;-)
  • Dixons Cafe

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Filey. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Filey.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
