Clubs (Dance Music) and Music Bars
I've just come from my friend's 30th birthday do at The Cross in Moseley, Birmingham.
The DJ that The Cross supplied was probably the worst DJ I have ever encountered. Here's why:
1. It was supposed to be an 80s and 90s night and he was playing stuff from the 70s for large parts of the evening.
2. It was clear he hadn't a clue about what music he was playing. He didn't know and didn't care.
3. He couldn't work out where to plug in his headphones (literally), which meant that we had to endure 30s of fade-out on the track being played, then 30s of fade-in on the next one. No mixing, beat-matching or anything.
I can only hope that my friend didn't pay anything for this fool.
Moseley Dance Centre can be likened to an overpriced school disco with a very limited bar and possibly the mankiest toilets in South Birmingham. Except the clientele is generally too old/drunk (rather than too young) to get into any decent club. Best avoided unless you're REALLY desperate for a drink after time's been called.
Moseley Dance Centre. A school disco for grownups, complete with village youth-club hall style architecture and internal deco. Bar until 2am most nights, usually full of not-entirely-sober people dancing and generally being happy. Good one.
Very strong free party scene - pick up fliers in local pubs or try Cinephilia or the Crafty Jungle. Much, much better than the clubs, especially the seedy, badly-run dumps that have come and gone in Balsall Heath.
Moseley Dance Centre on the main Moseley Road into town holds regular afro, Hip-hop, Blues and god knows what else nights - excellent, apparently.
Live Music Venues

JUG OF ALE!!!!! oh marvellous one, ideal for pre-snobs/ramshackle drinks. great live music too.
Steve Ajao has started playing at The Hog's Head every other Wednesday (23rd April 2003 was one so work it out yourself). The number of music venues has diminished due to complicated licensing laws, noise and a lack of interest from Corporate Brewers. The Jug has always attracted younger audiences so if you're anything like me you don't bother unless you've heard that there are some decent musicians on (I'm old OK shut up!). The Fighting Cocks has a no music policy but we're all hoping this will change and The Bull has mainly DJs - who are pretty good and I have heard some quite nice live noises coming from The Kavanagh but don't you think this is a pretty poor show for a village that boasts more talent per square inch than most other areas put together? I was involved with Moseley Festival from 1998 and I could've filled the park for a month with very able musicians and been entertained the whole time. This year I'm helping out with the Gypsy Jazz Festival in the park on the 12th and 13th July. It's a bit of a change and it's our contribution to Birmingham's bid for European City of Culture. Some of us are making the effort. See you there. G.
The Jug of ale pub has a band just about every night. Local lads Ocean colour Scene started playing here and it's rumoured they still do occasionally.
The Fighting Cocks hosts big band jazz every Monday night.
The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!
In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor
(the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.
We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!
If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide.
