Record Shops

  • HMV lewisham
  • There is a shop devoted to African CDs in New Cross.
  • get on the train to Charing X then Soho record stores
  • The place in the so-called "model market" or which everyone calls the "black market" which is really just a little alleyway with stalls behind the shopping mall.
  • Morps in the Black Market
  • That place near where they sell fish, its a small shop in a corner behind both the Riverdale centre and Beatties.

Clubs (Dance Music) and Music Bars

  • There is an unusual alternative night once a month at The Montague Arms in New Cross. The place is packed out listening to live bands and DJs.
  • Two dodgy refurbished 'bars' (both used to be excellent and have bnands - now they have bar stools and chrome stuff) - New Cross Inn (or Bar alchemy as it seems to now be called) and Goldsmiths Tavern.
  • Goldsmiths College Students' Union has been known to have the odd Drum and Bass/ Speed Garage night or two but the non-members' Speed Garage nights tend to attract Bermondsey Bloke and his orange Ben Sherman shirt.
  • The demise of "J.Arthur's" in Catford was a sad blow to many.
  • The Venue is not that good, only iuf you like old music or live bands. The Oasis tribute band Wonderwall once played there which was pretty good. Did anyone see that? Langtrys is alright too but the bouncers sometimes kick you out for no reason.

Live Music Venues

  • The Last lick 189 Deptford High St Jazz
  • Moonbow Jakes, Brockley and Catford
  • The crystal palace tavern may still have bands, and the montague arms. The coronet at E&C is good but only downstairs
  • Bands play at the Fox and Firkin in Lewisham and The Catapult Club, The Amersham Arms, The Paradise Bar, The Royal George (occasionally) and The Montague Arms in New Cross. The New Cross Inn has just started to have bands again too.
  • The Woodman (An Coillteoir), Lee High Road, Lee Green, SE13. Long standing Traditional Irish Music Session: Jigs Reels, Hornpipes and polkas etc., eclectically played on fiddle, banjo, flute and guitar. Other players of Irish traditional music welcome to make a valid contribution.Mighty craic. Sunday Night, 9.00pm onwards.
  • The Paradise Bar New Cross Road SE14
  • Again, Goldsmiths Students' Union puts on the odd band or two (Blur formed and played here, not that that's a good thing).

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Lewisham. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Lewisham.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
