Clothes Shops, Shoe Shops, Fashion and Bargains

  • mackays is actually getting better
  • the skate/surf shops and mcaleans be best bet
  • ALL CRAP-UNLESS THE 70'S IS YOUR BAG.MARONIQUE'S-EVEN THE NAME TELLS YOU NOT TO ENTER!MOST SHOPS CATER FOR THE 50+
  • Naa better in the big smoke
  • MacAllans and Buttresses are both ok, but if you buy anything here, someone else will be wearing it when you go out.
  • Inverness you must head loads of cheap rubbish in Caithness Glasgow is even better
  • sullamin makouli (atlanta sports )mr makouli cant be beat for a good crack and his young assisstant ashley is a nice young girl!
  • Not much choice of clothing shops really. There's Macallan's or Buttress',(owned by the wonderfully named Hector),both of which charge over inflated Inverness prices. If your on a budget(or dole)go to Mackays, but don't expect 2oo1 fashion.
  • whatsits mmm... weeks version way better!!!!!!!!!!! theres a FINE more store 2.
  • there is a very limited range of clothes shops in thurso, one f the best-for women- is Buttress, friendly staff good quailty clothes, and that. you can get hats, ties, etc.. too. buttress also sells men clothing down stairs, apparntly there good too, but i wouldnt know! for women, you SHOULDNT shop at mcallens, the staff there are rude, they treat you like dirt, they are only intrested in thin people, the dont stock size 14+!! and they stare at you as if you are about to steal summit!! mackeys is good if you are a + size women. they have a wide range of clothes. sinclars and atlanta sport are the best for sportswear, with sinclers being cheaper.
  • All the clothes shops are useless, or is just that no-one has any fashion sense these days? Bring back skin tight jeans (men and womens).
  • it is said there are 5 or 6 but this is propaganda of the worst sort. they are not clothes shops but in fact a conspiracy by dark powers to convince the residents of thurso that they need not join the 20th century. I'll say it one more time, a rhino shirt and faded levis does not a wardrobe make. Girls, white lycra? Velvet? Leopard skin? you make the jerry springer white trash ashamed.
  • Not much of a choice....the only place for good clothes.....Macallans....(expect to cry when you see the prices though)
  • Not a decent one within 100 miles. Just go to Inverness.
  • Unless you like tank tops and jeans with an elasticated waist (which after all describes most of the residents' usual dress) clothes shopping is a bit restricted
  • Your More Store for the best "tinky" fashions - frequented by AHF - her fave shop, even tho it is on the expensive side, but ideal for crap pressies for family and friends.
  • You really would be better off looking in Inverness. Thurso isn't really known for sartorial elegance, unless you find tight granite-wash jeans and Status Quo sew-on patches becoming.
  • Elizabeths in the old chinkys for turn of the century ladies fashions.
  • For shirts with cardboard collars and the latest farmyard fashions straight from the sheepwalk, shop in Caithness. Seriously though, McAllans isn't too bad these days. Still, they have very little choice and charge more for it.
  • Macallans, Butresses and eheheh.....???
  • Forget it. Go to Inverness.

Arts, crafts and such (Anything from pukka art galleries to craft shops. Trendy and twee both welcome.)

  • Durrans is good anything they don't have they will get
  • THURSO MUSEUM NEXY TO WOOLIES GOOD FOR A LOOK BACKAT HOW LITTLE WEVE COME FORWARD
  • Swanson Gallery(inside Library),has occasional display(Poncey rubbish). Museum next to Town Hall,(rather appropriate when you see the people that frequent said hall).Durrans great for craft materials.Hobgoblin equally as good for Hippy stuff i.e. incense sticks, wind chimes etc.
  • allsorts provide a lovely selection with friendly advice and service, wee bitty dear though!!!!!!!!!
  • whats art??
  • in the liberly, at the back, there is the swanson gallery. not much, a few bits a bobs if you are bored. free entry, but can be quite good.
  • Nice shop for bits and bobs...Hobgobblin...I think thats how you spell it????
  • The Toll Gallery has some amazing art work and Frank Begg one of the artists is really nice and happy to tell you about the work.
  • Hobgoblin. Amazingly weird assortment of everything from lavalamps through XXL skins to Christmas Cards. Get a piercing here!!!!!
  • The Thurso museum in the Old Library had a strange collection of objects apparently taken at random from whatever happened to end up on the beach after high tide following a particularly bad shipwreck
  • Miss Demeanour for fetish art - see internet-promotions web site.
  • Lots of the usual - knitted pastel coloured kiddies clothes, goth's jewellery, wood turning, glassware. Check out Northshore Ceramics in Wick for decent pottery, and there's a shop called Hobgoblin in Thurso which sells all your usual hippy gear and moonbeam wrapping paper, man.
  • Thurso Museum, Hobgoblins (mystical, Indian, Incense, Wizards Hats),Glass Creations down by the river.

Magazine and Comic Shops

  • loads, im not even going to try....
  • Nothing special...in Thurso I'm afraid...the best has to be Bews accross the road from the Job Center bench.
  • Jimbews and raffles ( formerly ferriers ) are great because they stock my favorite comic and lots of porno mags
  • Most of the shops in Thurso are in some way comic.

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Thurso. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Thurso.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
