Food
Mumtaz, curry awesom!!!
Mc Donalds is definately the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MCDONALDS
Shapla. Fantastic retro Indian (Flock wallpaper, no modern muck like balti etc... on the menu)just round the corner from The Angel. Able to comfortably sit about 12 but actually sitting 40 or more under the iron rule of the most bossy and dictatorial manager I've ever seen. A gem.
Some Italian. Possibly the only Italian in Bury. Crowded. Smells of stale cheese. Overcrowded at the weekend. Food decidedly average. Anywhere that can make veal tough is in serious trouble.
I went to a lovely restaurant on Saturday whilst visiting my cousin! The restaurant was called Tiramisu in Cannon Street - opposite old Cannon Brewery I think it was called. Decor isn't fantastic but the food was gorgeous! I had prawns that were amazingly massive!
Chick King is great! Everywhere else is over-priced
Charlies, Charlies,Charlies, Charlies, Charlies the best chinese takeaway in hte surrounding area.
we want a KFC!
Cafe Uno
Cafe Rouge
Pizza hut
Maccy dees
Mr chips
Mumtaz (Indian take-away) is excellent. If you're after food after a night in the pub, you should go to Maccy D's, West End Chippy or Charlie's.
The Star at nearby Lidgate has a superb Catalan chef - excellent stuff with emphasis on fish.
Maccy D's is the best after a heavy night down the pub.
The Bistro and Mortimer's, both of Churchgate St, are the best resaurants in town.
The Kebab shop on Angel Hill is the best place for chips, although their Kebabs are recommended after only a large amount of alcohol.
The best chip shop is actually the Hardwick Chippy, not the West End. Horrible greasy chips cooked in diesel oil from the West End.
The best place to eat is the West End Chippy... right by the entrance to town from the South side.
Pubs
Give the grapes a miss if you're not a goth, give the D&P a miss if you don't like mixing with students, don't bother with the wolf. The relaxing Lindon tree is my personal favorite, a good mix of folk and the food is top class. Visit the D&P on a Wednesday, the pub quiz is always good for a laugh.
Six bells- it's actully in Horringer (about a mile out) but does lush food.
Three kings- in fornam. again, foods great.
I went in the nutshell the other night and it was empty, a huge dissappointment I can tell you.
Pubs aren't fab either, although The Queens Head, Kings Arms and a visit to "Whatever" is in order!
The Grapes does a wicked reggae night once a month. the D&P is THE student pub, but it does get very busy during the holidays. The Wolf turns into a meat market at the weekends and although the drinks can be cheap, you should go to the D&P.
Personally I recommend the Queen's Head for the under 30's who like atmosphere, the Dog and Partridge is an excellent pub filled with beautiful people, and goths, crusties, and ANY music fan will love the Grapes. All in the centre of Bury!
the wolf is practically giving drinks away but apparently there are "ladies of the night" upstairs, depends if you like that kind of thing
DandP, DandP, DandP. Even though it fills up with skanky students at holiday times.
The Dog and Partridge is where all the local students go, its always packed. There's also The Wolf, and the Grapes, but you might get your face glassed in there! Don't go in The Black Boy, it's an old mans pub.
The Grapes used to be ace before it installed CCTV. The Cupola had its moments, as did the Masons and the Dog and Partridge. Fleetwoods was indeed one of the best, especially when it ran roots nights. These days, when I return to Bury, I end up at the Queen's Head.
Fleetwood's was by far the best pub, until it closed in October 95. (re-opening early 96) Fleetwoods did reopen in the summer of 96, but with a new name - The Office. It's about as good as it ever was, once the novelty of going to a pub that is upstairs above a shop wears off, it's pretty crap! With regards to Fleetwoods, which closed Oct 95: it opened again around April '96 with new owners and re-named 'The Office'. However it closed again in Jan 97.
How dare you? - The Dog and Partridge is my favourite pub. ???? year olds indeed!
The most popular pub with students age ??? is the Dog and Partridge... it is located across from Guildhall Feofoment School (which I attended in my youth).
The Nut Shell is the smallest pub in England and is located in the heart of the town, near the Abbey Gardens.
Cafes and Coffee Shops
Cafe a go go. again down St. john Street
Thorntons is wonderful!!!
many, many coffee shops, but many many old people as well so that's probably Y. Grt little healthy veggie one in the back of holland and barrett!!
Croydons on the Market Square (above the jewellers) has to be the best - delicious cakes - huge portions - reasonable prices - exclusive atmosphere. Not sure I should be posting this - if it gets too popular there won't be room for me!
Cafe go go is a delightful little cafe just to pop in and have a quick brew. Bloody overpriced though £1.20 just for a cup of tea ! How bout that?
breakfast at crusts cafe is nice and cheap and very good
Cafe Uno- Maybe a little expensive but nice.
Cafe Rouge- " " " " " "
Thorntons- does a really nice hot choclate.
