Clothes Shops, Shoe Shops, Fashion and Bargains
a ladys underwear shop next to the bakers
One or two non-descript shops selling a few clothes or the expensive 'Pieces of Eight' at Porlock Weir. Otherwise though, forget setting the latest fashion trends, you'd fit in much better in Porlock with a checked shirt, muddy trousers, muddy boots, a quilted waistcoat and messy hair, honest. And that's Sunday best!
Pieces of Eight
Arts, crafts and such (Anything from pukka art galleries to craft shops. Trendy and twee both welcome.)
there is the millwheel gallery
Exmoor Glass at prolock weir is quite cool they make glass in a tiny studio by the harbour, Paul (longy) long (one of the blowers) is a very good DJ and wasted in minehead.
Lots of crafty shops in Porlock but by far the best has to be the Olde Drapery in the High Street. Marion there is a law unto herself and is brill, she also brings back lots of interesting trinkets from India to sell in the shop.
There is a path full of walls which runs from the rec right in to Porlock for griffitti. Gwa's mum owns the ultra punire gallery in Porlock!
For Craft, The Old Tannery is the epicentre of real craft; toymakers carpenters etc all have workshops there that you can buy stuff at. Or used to: I havent been there since 1989 when my mum used to run it, so it could be a big cinema or something now! Across the road from the Castle, down a long driveway. Say hi to the Hancock Crew at the toy shop if they're still there.
Glass Blowers, Blacksmith, Art Gallery,
Shops:
5 such shops all worth a visit - what about the antique shops?
Wheelhouse Gallery. Next to the Castle pub.
The Ivy Tree is a lovely little trinkety type shop which sells beautiful cards, and lots of unusual inexpensive gifts. Well worth a visit. The owner (Jason) is a nice guy too.
Magazine and Comic Shops
The news agents Peter & Chris are the proprieters and so friendly,
go in for the good service, a laugh and a chat.
There's only one newsagents, but the Victor isn't published anymore so what's the point.
The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!
In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor
(the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.
We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!
If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.
If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.
