Food

  • Too many. Its ace when your on the way home drunk you are actually spolit for choice. We have italians and a turkish place, indians , chinese all of them. What ever you want to eat we will have. There even building us a new McDonalds and another supermarket.
  • In our vocabulary the phrase "ASHTON KEBAB HOUSE" is truly a LEGEND!! It is THE landmark of ashton and indeed a SAVIOUR of all kebab houses!! Also CUSHTY IS COMEDY! We would like to recommend the Tasty Bite, which does excellent pizzas and cheesy garlic bread until the early hours of the morning!!
  • lal quilla indian restaurant has gone down the pan these days, nowhere near the place it used to be. was once the mecca for all indian food lovers but not any more i am afraid!! TAKEAWAY FOODS: ashton kebab house is a must for all pizza lovers. they do a great meaty pizza but also there are seats and tables so you can have a donner kebeb in comfort while you wait for your pizza to cook. it has had numerous owners for the past few years but the two fellas who have it now have got it right. for fish and chips theos chippy is great for that old british tradition and is still open into the small hours of the night. avoid tasty bite if you want pizzas, you might see what resembles there pizzas outside queens clubs entrance on the floor!!! ashton we have probably the best chinese restaurant in the north west of england "the chinese garden" i have been to chinkys in manchester and liverpools chinatowns and not one has come close yet. book early as tables are alawys in demand. great food and great service.
  • KFC, Chinese Garden bit pricey but good "jackbit", lots of good chippies, but for decent Italian you need to visit Don Pinos at Golborne.
  • is cushty still going in bryn street, was a regular call off point before going home to newton, after a night on the piss in wigan.also chinese bottom of old road was good. is continental in bryn still going. one in earlestown crap
  • you name it, its probably here
  • Ashton-in-Makerfield houses one hell of a fine Kebab House in the adequately named 'Ashton Kebab House'. Outstanding! Just dodge the peppers which left me with camel breath and a blazing hot rusty sherrifs badge the day after. Also good is the KFC but aren't they always
  • ITS ASHTON, THE FOOD CAPITAL OF THE WORLD. YOU NAME IT WE HAVE IT, KEBABS, PIES (YES PIES! ALTHOUGH WERE NOT IN WIGAN), PIZZAS, CHIPS, CURRYS, CHINESE (CHINESE GARDEN WELL GOOD!). FRIED CHICKEN, BSE BURGERS. WE HAVE BLOODY EVERYTHING!
  • Robin or the spoons for food
  • The Robin Hood, The Sir Thomas Gerard, The Bay Horse, these are the best food places! They also have good beer gardens too! There are also chip shops and a chinese take away - I think that the best chippy is Harrisons which is situated half way up Old Road!
  • Lal Quilla is ace, they do a belting massalla and the staff are very very friendly and accomodating, with the exception of weird beard whos wierd and has a beard. Its a great way to round off an evening out with friends where you can make smutty jokes and references to farting and indian culture whilst sniggering into your menu. The atmosphere is relaxing and ambient which more than compensates for the dated decor, what is particularly nice is sitting in the bar area looking out of the window at all the pissed up madheads bailing out of queens trying to snog pigs from leigh, start fights or shout at passing cars, while yuour warm and about to enjoy a super scran, tha nost.
  • the chippy at whitledge green do the biggest and best spring rolls for miles! for the best chips go to Frydays (geddit?) on bryn street, massive portions and that girl with the red hair is always dead nice

Pubs

  • The Robin Hood is a classy joint!! I have seen the best looking barmaid in Ashton behind the bar (goes by the name of Gravy)!!! The drinks are cheap from Sunday to Thursday - £1.29 a pint, or 3 bottles of anything for a fiver - beltin!!! They have also got pool table at last, but Rod, is there a seperate one for customers coz the staff always seem to be on it!
  • bay horse(although a little bit to far out of town) robin hood, tommy gees(slang for the sir thomas gerrard) and cross keys are good pubs to visit in ashton, also there is a little irish club in bryn st that does great cheap guiness(only you may have to get up and sing the irish national anthem at last orders before leaving) the cross keys does cheap beers allday sat, sun till 7pm and allday midweek!!!!! lovely stella artois, carling prem and guiness all for 1.60 a pint. just be carefull of queens and old marys at letting out times, theres always some mike tyson lurking about for lennox lewis! be warned!!!!!!
  • The Golden's a dump.
  • none for decent folk to go to in ashton, they are all dirty and scruffy, except for the old foggies pub namely the bayhorse on liverpool road.
  • the cross keys on a wednesday night is good, if not just to see how long it takes for a fight to start or how long the dj can refrain before he has to play gold by spandau ballet. i love it!
  • If you want a proper pint, get away from the teeny bopper pubs that only sell bottles of pop, try the Hingemakers on Heath Road. Caledonian on Bolton Road on occasions but jewel in the Crown "Tom & Jerries", sorry the Sir Thomas Gerard that is.
  • Robin Hood or the Scud Ya, is about the best place. Although I think Rods letting it go down hill abit now. Cracking atmosphere for watching football esp when Utd Lpol Everton or England are playing. Does Painter ever move from the end of the bar?? Tom and Jerries is also decent. Cheap bevs good food loads of seats and tables what more could you ask for, A large screen Tv perhaps and some music? Other pubs are a much of a muchness but I recomend the BeerHive when Champs league games are on ITV2 and Mad jacks is always a good laugh on Tuesday night Quiz night, although The Royle family win every week.
  • better than newton. a few good nights in nupro, copped off once in here. old marys was full of hangers.queens was a nono
  • cant count that high
  • Mad Jacks, Irish Club, good night out for the 25's and over, live group to get up and boogie to. Open till 1.30 and £2 to get in
  • Coming from neighbouring Leigh, I had my doubts about Ashton. Leaving it all doubts had been eradicated. Ashton is a very busy town, good pubs (Kings Head apart - seemed more asylum-ish with urine submerged bogs) and well worth a visit.
  • CROSS KEYS, RED LION, ROBIN HOOD.
  • Robin Hood rocks wetherspoons is good for cheap bevvies
  • Ashtoon has more pubs per squre mile than anywhere I have ever seen. Tom and Gerrys is the best with mad jacks a close second. the robin hood is good but the draft tastes like it has been filtered through a pair of used knickers though.
  • I felt compelled to write, responding to the blurt that has written his piece about freaks with a modem spoiling the site. Here's my points - 1. The site itself quite rightly states at the top of this very submission form that it's "a fun site". You say late night freaks, I'm sure if you'd check the time on the message you'd find they were, like this one, penned at around 3 - 4ish. Is this late to you? Perhaps you're still on the way home from Aldi with 36 shopping bags full of Battenburg cake and that shitty herb tea stuff? 2. It's a laugh. Ha Ha. If you use the net, look up this phrase on google or something else and see if you can master it, tick turd. 3. The Robin Hood's a quality gaff, top drawer, full of diamond geezers on saturday aff, expecially the nupe's lot. Big ups. 4. This Internet things going to be big.
  • A note to the blert who only rated the NUPRO as one star. Come in there and go to the games room when Liverpool are on the Telly and tell Big Joughin that the NUPES is only worth one star. He'll take the shackles off his feet so he can dance on your heed.
  • OK, whoever put that ridiculous and frankly stupid star rating on wants a lamp off roasty, how on earth can you rate the Robin at 3 stars you menc, it is so obviously a 5 star boozer to anyone who knows this gem of a town.Ashton is sacrosanct and the robin is the jewel in its crown, if you have ever spent any serious drinking time in this town, you would know that you pleb. Dont put schoolboy comments like that on this site, go away and learn how to sup tha nost. My gut feeling is your someone who went to canny, you drink in the red or wetherspoons when its cheap on a weeknight (lets say the curry club night for example) you have one pig ugly bird and you think kudos is ace and you probably go into wigan in fancy dress on boxing day,any money you dont even like football. Pray we dont meet in the tasty bite, rim kid.
  • I'll give them stars out of 5 with the lowest being 1*! Well, starting from the top end (neat NATWEST bank) The Kings Arms - 1* The Fleece - 1* The Golden Lion 3* The Red Lion 2* The Sir Thomas Gerard 4* The Cross Keys 2* The Robin Hood 3* The Beer Hive 1* The Presidential 1* Mad Jacks 3* Eagle and Child 2* - and if your bored on a Tuesday night, the band Mojo practices here along with others so go along and see them. Nupro 1*
  • The Robin is a top notch boozer and a gift when the footballs on, although Rod always seems to get a smack when its an England game. Saturday afternoons are particularly good and the pub has an eclectic mix of clientelle, summer afternoons on the car park are very relaxing. After the robin why not try Theos for a post match sausage dinner. mmmmmmmm!
  • DO NOT go into the presidential. the woman in there is the scariest person i've seen for ages. the robin hoods not bad but the drinks are dear. for cheap drinks go to the labour clubs at bryn or old road...£1.30 for a bacardi breezer!

Cafes and Coffee Shops

  • the galley cafe on garswood st is great for a cheap breakfast. not exactly the ritz but great to mop those saturday morning hangovers up!!!
  • too many in ashton to count or list
  • That dead nice one upstairs in GreensWay. The had pretty good cheese on toast their, but that was yonks ago. Has it shut down by any chance?
  • The 1910 Cafe is good situated at the back of the palace arcade!
  • conversations delicatessen (the one near the bus stops)was open on christmas day y'know! sad.

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.
