Food

  • bets chippy is the cabin oposite the tase of idia, one on the high street nxt to the butchers is good but not as gd as the cabin. the dolphin is not good anymore. the taste of india is gd and so is the chinese on the high street.
  • Old Crown pub grub - mmmmmmmmmmm - dont need to say anymore
  • The DOLPHIN cos alex works there and hes sweaty
  • CHERRY DALE - Chineses food. a bit pricey though its the only one for miles. a couple a few fish and chip shops (the dophin is the best down near the train station) and a Balti. oh yeah there are a few restaurants Cubley Hall, Ti'amo (italian) Tandorri (indian)
  • Two Chinese takeaways in Penistone, Canton on the High Street and Sam's in Springvale. Penistone Balti House is a good Indian takeaway and there is an Indian restaurant/takeaway at Bridge End. Yates's chipoyl near the Rose & Crown, Dolphin chipoyl ('the Greek') down the hill, Geof Beard's chipoyl down Green Road and another chipoyl at Bridge End. Italian restaurant at Bridge End. Pub grub at the Old Crown and the Rose & Crown but only at dinnertime. No pub grub at teatime except for Cubley Hall.
  • Balti house needs a special mention - top hole Indian grub.
  • Greggs on the high street, my friend works there!!
  • Taste of India - Bridge End, lovely curry and you get a hot cloth to clean your grubby faces with afterwards... however, they do not have the correct glasses to serve Drambuie in... Tiamos - half price nights for budget yummy pizzas
  • there is a chippy at the top of penistone and a chinkey bouth not to bad but i like the one at the bottom at bridgend but thy only open dinner times and is verey populear and just acroos from that is a indean take a way
  • The Dolphin (or the Greek as it is known to the locals). Although it had a bit of a fire not so long back they are back open now and serving the best (after a few pints obviously) kebabs and fish and chips around. Rusby's - the best fish and chips anywhere. Apart maybe from Jeff's if you like lots of grease.
  • Penistone Balti House is very much recommended. Good food and sensibly priced. They are a bit slow so it is best to phone in the order. Sam's Chinese take-away, Springvale same comments as the above. There is also the 'Taste of India' restaurant, opposite the White Hart and another Chinese take-away on the High Street.

Pubs

  • Cubley Hall is probably the Classiest. though its a bit predencious (excuse my spelling though im sure some1 will correct it) The Bridge is pretty trendy though a bit blan. but for a night of erm culture try the white heart with bricks flying through the window frequently. The bar staff got held up at gun point a couple of years ago and the Land lords sheep is often seen pondering around the pub. But its quite a dive much like the Spred. The Wentworth is also a bit divey though its the only place to play pool and the pool table is a bit sh*t but its cheap so no complaints!!!
  • 'The Bridge' has shut down and is now boarded up.
  • Spread Eagle has become (almost) civilised these days. Wentworth has the best real ale.
  • The ever-popular Cubley Hall, famed for Friday night madness for Penistone Grammar 6th Formers (only the over 18s, mind you) has left many of us with fond memories of throwing up in the car park and falling over the walls.
  • there are three pubs at the top of penistone .there is the spred eagel more for the older end of the age scale and there the old crown this is a lovey pup and used by all ages 18-100 and then there the roseen crow thats as a good room for partys weddings.
  • The Wentworth maybe used to have some of the more undesirable element, but now it's just grand. If you want to play pool, then you just about always get on the table straight away. Beer's not bad either.
  • White Hart. If the landlord, Sam, doesn't insult you, you're not worth insulting, it goes with the territory. Beer's Nitro-keg 'smooth' Eg. John Smith's, and a bit cold (£1.70 a pint in May 2000)but the place is very homely and comfortable. Sam doesn't take any sh** from anyone. The Wentworth Arms seems to attract the cauliflower-ear-and-broken-nose brigade. I've heard that they don't let you in without a tatoo. Three pubs are close to each other: Pimply people who don't shave seem to gravitate to the Spread Eagle, which is a little on the seedy side. The Old Crown has a good disco at weekends, in the back room, and comfort in the main room. It has that sort of atmosphere where everything stops when someone comes in, like a Western saloon (Stones/Tetley). They serve food on weekday lunchtimes, nothing very adventurous but not bad. The Rose and Crown has a bit of a disco at one end of the room at weekends, which means that it is possible to hold a conversation at the other end (Stones). It is a bit sticky but not as bad as the Spread Eagle, where you wipe your feet on the way out (Tetley). Just outside Penistone is Cubley Hall, which often has a pretentious, pinstriped clientele, the sort with the personalised number plates. As the only local pub with food on every day, frankly, the food is boring and never changes but the range of beer is very good. All real ale, not a 'smooth' in sight, if a bit too cold. One particular bar woman there can freeze you with a glance, so behave!

Cafes and Coffee Shops

  • As penistone is such a humble little market town it has a couple of cozy little granny coffee shops such as the the post office coffee shop though you gonna be surrounded by 70 year old women talking about how the washer has just broken and their constant ill health
  • Hanwells Cafe for a fry-up. Vicarage Tearooms for a light meal.
  • Green Goat Vegetarian Cafe just by the Old Vicarage Tearooms but offering wildly different fare. You haven't lived till you've sampled the delight's of Bernice's Spinach & Kumquat Tart. The upstairs room is at the hub of Penistone's thriving alternative lifestyle scene (see events for individual listings)
  • There's a tea bar. Occasionally. It comes and goes.
  • Vicarage Tea Rooms, stick your little finger out as you drink. Yates's chip shop has a cafe for the usual chipoyl fry-ups. Henley's Cafe does a good fried breakfast and sandwiches but, quaintly, does not serve cooked food after 11am "Because we close at 1pm". Clientele a bit odd sometimes.

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...
