Clubs (Dance Music) and Music Bars

  • Back in the day: Gucchi's(88-90)Victoria Park Road E9,Poser's club E9(Duragon)(81-83)off of Homerton High st;,Flamingo's(77-80)Hackney Marhses E10,Prince of Wales(78-82)Kingsland rd;,Black Bull(78-80)Candy st;Hoxton,Spread Eagle(76-82) Homerton High st;,Follies Bar(81-83) Lauriston rd;,Manhattans(76-80)Cadogan Terrace E9,Beachcombers (78-80) Cambridge Heath rd E2;(Now Metropolis),Elton's (79-82)Tottenham High rd;,Shanell's (78-81) Stoke Newington High rd; N.16,Clarendon Pub(92-95)Balcorne st; E9,The Joiners (92-95)Bethnal Green rd;
  • Another non starter localy as far as I'm concerned.
  • Mindfluid at Soshomatch, 2 Tabernacle Street, EC2
  • Lime Bar......when it decides to open???
  • lots of strip clubs, Browns, Metropolis etc..
  • The Tekno undeground - Pendragon at Tyssen Street, various things at Trenz (Amhurst Rd.) and the All Nations. Squat parties, lots of.

Live Music Venues

  • The Leisure Lounge,Bethnal Green Rd Tea, corner of Bethnak Green Rd and Bishopsgate. Church outside Bethnal Grn Tube, occasional classical music concerts.
  • The Pleasure Unit - has launched the career of many east end bands.
  • Despite being a public money pit and having an inept bookings policy, the Ocean on Mare Street is technically the best live venue in London, no question. Only in Hackney could such a wonderful facility be so underused. Chats Palace in Homerton has good free acoustic jams on Tuesdays
  • Ocean is not bad. Unfortunately not many pubs have live music these days
  • The Globe in Morning Lane, blues jam run by a mad China man known as Billy Chong - Terry to his friend - the good the bad and lots of the very ugly. Great fun on a Monday night though. Thursday traditional singalong, loads of real old boys singing old boys songs, but some real talent, I think this does the ocasionaly Saturday now but not sure. Trad jazz with Sunday Lunch... my favorite boozer in case you hadn't guessed. Fridays suck though as it's Karokee
  • The Lord Cecil in Hackney across from the Hackney Baths (beginning of 'murder mile' in Clapton) is the best thing in the area for music and hanging out. Friendly couple run it and there's more odd ball characters in there than is natural. I knew I was in Hackney when I sat down.
  • Most Music halls have disappeared in the east end the only one thats worth mentioning is The Hackney Empire i guess
  • - Ocean on Mare Street. Massive.
  • The Duke of York, Bethnal Green. For the best of UK house and andGarage......and the friendly dog.
  • Best night out on Bethnal Green Road: The Old George. The Guvnor looks like one of Chas N Dave. Mix of all generations. Top night out.

Cinemas

  • nearest Cinema is the GENESIS, Mile End Rd,E1( about 20 mins walk from Bethnal Green Tube)
  • Then:The ABC Regal Well st; where I saw (As a school boy) the premier of The Exorcist, Clockwork Orange plus others. The Pavillion Mare st; where I saw (As a school boy) the premier of Enter the Dragon e.t.c
  • i go down to angel
  • Thank god for being able to buy DVD's on the internet and Sky. I used to like the Rio but too hard to get too.
  • On page http://www.knowhere.co.uk/446_goingout.html there is some info about the lux. The lux closed, was then DNET and has re - opened as the LUX. the lux does not run the cinema now, but there are still screenings in conjunction with artists, exhibitions, projects.
  • Odeon in Mile End Road was our nearest. Saw Bambi and Tron there.
  • - There's no Odeon on Mare Street, as Knowhere claims... There's a great artsy-type cinema on Kingsland Road called Rio - worth going just to see the architecture, if not the films. On Hoxton Square there's Lux, another trendy artsy place.
  • There's a new Genesis multiplex on Mile End Road between Stepney Green and Whitechapel tubes (it's the only cinema anywhere near Bethnal Green). The screens aren't huge but it's worth going to if you live nearby as it's a lot cheaper than Leicester Square.
  • Gaumont, Dalston, Odeon around the corner and the one opposite Hackney Empire in Mare St. I went to them all in the 60's

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Bethnal Green and Hackney. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Bethnal Green and Hackney.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
