• About 95% of the ACCOMMODATION in Abingdon is privately mortgaged housing. These families are totally JOB DEPENDENTAny problem in that area sends the anxiety levels way high. Theres is a very big amlost NAZI- like down on immigrants,scroungers and art types. If you want an example of an archytypal repressive small town atmosphere this is it. The population is about 99% WHITE. The AIM of the town is return to 1953.

• the three main secondary schools (larkmead, john mason and fitzharrys) have some bizarre rivalry, only when the students leave/enter 6th form to their differences disappear. there have been some classic fights! didn't someone once say abingdon was the oldest town in england?

• Abingdon School is a cold Victorian place attempting to instill Freemason rituals. A scandal in the 1970s was hushed up involving homosexual masters. Caning and corporal punishment was quite common there up to about 1975. Francis Maude was a pupil c 1973. Eric Anderson was headmaster c1970s (prince Caharles and Blairs tutuor) later went on to become Head of Eton. But school was ineffective traning for Oxbridge and an Empire long since vanished. Few other notables.
• there's a regular boat service in the summer (run by salters steamers) between oxford and abingdon. the boats have bars and sell ice cream, and the scenery makes you think you've died and gone to heaven. the stand-up comedy provided by punting parties observed en route is sidesplitting
• Abingdon has a beautiful twintown called Gorinchem, in Holland. Youth from 17-24 can visit
• Nice power station (Didcot'A'). I see they're building another one (Didcot'B'); how nice. What a great place to live (a bit like Milton Keynes). There's never a shortage of contractors!!
