Clothes Shops, Shoe Shops, Fashion and Bargains
Jailhouse has now closed down. However, if you are looking for goth, alternative clothing, band shirts, etc. there is a new shop just opened in the Bargate Centre, called Alternative Option. They will also be stocking Alchemy stuff, rubber gear and designer clothes. They also have reasonable prices in there, which is always a bonus!
Beatnik on Old Northam Road actually sells good new clothes (!) believe it or not.
"JUST ADD WATER" is a bit crappy compared to "MOIST", but still good : both in the Bargate Shopping centre. There is also "LEGENDS" in the Marlands Shopping Centre!
oasis, pilot, benetton, urban angel(near Eastgate carpark), M2(if it ever opens again), Next, River Island, Topshop, Debenams(for morgan, giant, warehouse etc)
The shops to look out for if you are into skating, or surfing are Offbeat sportz, Legends, Just add water and Moist
Bargate Centre and Marlands Centre (www.marlands.co.uk) have some good individual shops, and the £250 million West Quay development will bring a lot more high street names when it opens in Autumn 2000.
M2 is the place for Dance orientated people
Jailhouse Clothing Company - St.Mary's Street and Shirley Road for all your goth and biker gear 'Gosh' clothing in The Bargate Centre also stocks a selection of PVC clothing and otherclubwear

new respect for the Bargate! a fresh and funky new art gallery is being developed upstairs in the Bargate. Southampton's local talent will be on public display @ the city landmark.
Southampton - the renaissance is evolving.
The art gallery above the library in the civic centre is reputed to be one of the best in Britain, also one at the institute (new artists) and the John Hansard at the University proper (Highfield campus)
Fabric land in East street v. morish for anyone with customisation or textilesish tendencies.
The Civic Centre gallery really is good - very big with lots of changing exhibitions and loads of stuff by people tou've heard of, which is obviously essential.
Public Hangings in Bitterne Park is wicked.
Southampton City Art Gallery
John Hansard Gallery (at the highfield campus of southampton university)
Millais gallery (at the Southampton Institute)
On St Mary's street there is a small gallery "A Space" where local artists can apply to show their work.
Bedford Place! Loads of lovely little places! Silver Nutmeg is gorgeous!!
Civic Centre is pretty good, not afraid to exhibit cutting edge artists either.
There's one art gallery which used to have a room full of balloons
the art gallry by the libray has some good stuff now an again. there used to b good graphie about but they buffed it all, except for the nike tick on the bridge at the sation witch rely anoys me lol
Love the central library - local displays of crafts/sculpture/paintings etc etc and regular touring displays.
Great arty stuff to be found at the Library entrance shop [back door of the Guildhall, really], instead of boring souvenirs.
guildhall has an art gallery i nce went in there and they had painting with elephant poo all over it INTENTIALLY prooves that culturing yourself is a good laugh sometimes
Jacaranda, I think it comes under this cause the shop is art, v. hippy v. cool soothing nice I luv it!
the city art gallery has excellent exhibitions
I tend to search around craft fairs for the odd class piece of gothic or dark artwork, scuplture etc. Everything seems to be too boring or happy for my tastes though, sorry.
There's an art gallery in the town hall, and one in the institute.
Try Southampton Art Gallery, in the Guildhall and Civic Centre complex.
Southampton City Art Gallery, off of Commercial Road, is world renowned for it's exhibitions. The John Millais Gallery, part of Southampton Institute, and the Hansard gallery, part of SOuthampton university, are also good. The Beartrice Royal in nearby Eastleigh also has a lot to offer.
Whitewoods in the city centre offers a range of DIY, Hobby and Doll's house bits & pieces. If you looking for something, it's always worth a try. 13 Civic Centre Road (opposite the Guildhall and KFC!)
Magazine and Comic Shops
the forbidden planet, just by east street shopping centre is perhaps one of the best comic book shops i have ever been to in my life.go in and look around the selection of graphic novels, books, action figures from x-men to the simpsons to janis joplin?!!then, stumble out after dark as the fit guy behind the counter informs you you have been there for three hours! Also stocks videos that would be hard to come by anywhere else
Forbidden Planet, east street has a lot of comics, worth checking out if you like that crap.
Issacs newsagents in Queensway stock a good selection.
The good one in St' mary's Street has closed down but there's another one across the road from it which is ok
The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!
In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor
(the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.
We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!
If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide.
