Clubs (Dance Music) and Music Bars

  • Le Pub, Saturday nights, free music until round 7 when they start charging so get in early and ull be fine, unless u go outside for some fresh air, cause it starts to stink in the log cabin after stubbs lets a few go and some sweaty tit starts dancing like a twat, DEAD SOULS COLLECTIVE!. Tj's....only worth going for the hardcore gigs "SWHC" everything else is crap. Clwb Ifor Bach, Proper welsh, proper bo, barfly, allright like, can have a good show their now and again. If u want more of a dance vibe, Zanzibar innit bitches and Yates's bread.
  • The Bassment in the town centre is good for a friendly night after the Murrenger An escape from the trendy nonsense and filthy fashion sense of the rest of Newport. Plenty of man rock with a few dance tunes thrown in for those of us that wish to move our bodies
  • chicago rock and opposite a blinding curry house poppadoms!
  • me and my mates love the metz lounge and ott's, both are R'n'B free zones which makes a change, low lighting, candles on tables and leather sofa's. cant beat it!
  • Most clubs in port are a load of shite except maybe tj's where they have good bands from time to time such as stretch armstrong and Estevez
  • otts on tuesday nights- over the edge alternative and metal night sometimes their are good live bands- sometimes not!!
  • OH MY MISSPENT YOUTH!! TJ'S, DOWNSTAIRS IN THE COTTON CLUB, ANNABELS,
  • TJs is the best place to go in Newport, for gigs or just on a night out, few places in town but never bothered with them cos full of townies etc etc...
  • The Legendary TJ's is a bit out of my age range nowadays, but before my 20s I had a marvellous time. Good to feel part of a crowd when you're going through those pre20-year-old type traumas - they'll be there for the rest of your life. But so will some of your mates that you made.
  • Is "Lasers" still there? It used to be the best club going when Newport had only two clubs... I forget the name of the other bout it was really small and was above a row of shops..
  • TJ's forever - even though it seems to have got more mainstream in recent years.
  • Vinly Nation Presents A night of hard dance @ The Baltica. Fortnightly on Thrusdays. Resident DJ Ice & Guests. Only £1 entry. Pool tables, cheap drinks and an excellent atmosphere.
  • well if your looking for the usual townie ,sleezey mingrats you cant beat Newports finest "zanzibar" or "zanz" to the lovely regulars! But for all the alternative boys and girlsthere is the famous tj's.where on a friday night you are bound to bumb into your little brother or sister moshing with there over sized slipknot hoodie. But you cant beat Tj's for an end to your , when your so drunk you'll dance anyway. by the drinks are served smiply by the can!
  • Dance music clubs...well I'm not exactly the biggest fan of Dance music, but John Henry's seems to be the place to be Friday nights. It has an outdoor piazza type place [okay,so signs like 'Posta'are painted on the walls looking extremely un-italian, but, y'know...] Zanzibar is quite well frequented too, so I'm told.
  • zanzibar (bre), and voodoo (spakka)
  • oh innit cobarnas is fuckin wicked like have a couple of brews and fuckin pull some shleper an that sellin speed in the back of zanzis knows it like
  • Sanjays - Run of the mill nightclub located on stow hill Club Loudoo - as above, this time located down toward the baneswell area
  • Panzibar
  • bladhy bladhy blay tjs blah yak yak
  • The place to be in newport has to ZANIZBAR - it has the latest music played all nite upstairs downstairs you have your chillout room and on groundfloor you have your "older" music i.e wham or and cheeze like s-club severn!! The place to be. Voodoo is also quite good for a nite out but alot smaller.
  • dont bother they are all shit
  • If your looking for a half decent place to have a drink, dance and a laugh then Yates is the place to go. Chicago's is not bad either, all the music is 60's/70's stuff. Zanzibar is a bit boring, The Pen & Wig is a slappers paradise, TJ's is a dive.
  • Newport - Zanzibar and Voodoo......... only one thing to say about these quality establishments...... "Who let the dogs out????!!!!!!"
  • Don't come to Newport for Clubs. Bar Rhumba has a refreshing attitude.
  • ok zanzibar could be likened to a meat market but it's cool. cheezy music, tiny dance floor etc but hell this is newport we're talking about. if u want class go to cardiff. Yea the guys are all freaks there, well mostly all of them, but look around. men are freaks everywhere. not just in zanzis
  • well if u like crap nites then go to VooDoo where all the VooDoo people hang out!! or if u want to be all hot and crushed try out Zanzibar....
  • tj's tj's tj's tj's tj's tj's tj's tj's tj's tj's. Townies need not apply. I don't think you could class the Angel as a club but hell it's a good skater hang out.
  • Zanzibar (POP and Dance), Tjs (everything mailnly Rock), Bah Rhumba (indie etc on Weds, Fri Sat nights enigma), VOODOO (shite), V3 ( closed down now, but was very good before)
  • Downstairs in the cotton club USED to be good. Stick to John Henrys bar throughout the summer if you want a good, friendly night with an all night bbq.
  • If you want a fight or an easy lay go to anywhere that plays chart stuff - Zanzibar, Voodoo etc. If on the other hand you want a laugh in a friendly environment - where in 6 years I have yet to see a fight - try downstairs in the Cotton Club on weekends or V3 on a wednesday, both play excellent indie stuff and 80's cheese - TJ's is also good although one of my mates did get beaten up there once and it does seem to be extremely full of young looking people. Some of the pubs have late licenses too now which is good - the Pen and Wig on Stow Hill is a good one
  • Cotton Club (downstairs) on the weekend is a good indie night (if crowded), or the legendary TJ's for some good dirty fun.
  • Zanzibar, club voodoo, barrumba, TJ's god i could go on ...and on and on
  • TJ's used to kick arse about 8 years ago, now the DJ's have changed and it's shite. Hang the friggin DJ. I could do better. All the other nightlubs are meat-markets for the beautiful people who love a fight, kebab and a shag (in that order)
  • loads of them-not that they're any good...good for a fight no less
  • two place, the Griffen and the Zanzibar, good names but shit music and beer.
  • TJ's is the ony place worth a shit, I seem to live there
  • "Heights 2000"is now known, and has been for over a year now, as "Zanzi Bar" And "Ritzies" has also recently changed to "Voodoo" Both clubs are located within the town centre, and guarantee a good night out!!!
  • Castell Bingo Full of groovin' oldies
  • V3 is a fairly new club in Newport - playing mainly house and dance music. Check out the big paper mache dragon they've got in there... Bar Rumbah - not been yet but looks like your standard 1st Leisure Corp, Rank etc. nightclub from the outside.
  • T.J.`s is quite near the sk8 park. Kurt Cobain Proposed to Courtney Love there and is a great place on Friday.
  • Ritzy's - Full of under-aged kids. I used to go there when I was 16 and I used to look like I was 10.
  • the club scene in newport...in a word, tragic beyond belief. are under 5 foot 3, male and think that shell suits are pretty damn' groovy? this is the place for you. there is a street of clubs off the high street, ranging from sad to scary. enjoy.
  • Newport has lots of nightclubs the most popular is Heights 2000 (was Bookerts). It has lights and meets Thursdays to Sundays.
  • Annabels, Stow Hill (all sorts of music: Metal night, dance, indie, etc) Heights 2000, Stow Hill (mostly Dance) Ritzy, Bridge Street (mostly Dance)

Live Music Venues

  • T.J's .. what?? You've never been??? and ocasionaly the Newport City Live Arena!
  • glc are coming back soon.
  • Maindee Festival is free and has loads of bands
  • Engineers pub Friday & Saturday nights Hornblower Thursday and Friday nights and some Sundays Potters Friday and Saturday nights Riverside tavern Wednesday night
  • TJS i know this place just keeps onpopping up but its one of the best places around at the mo!! u can go down and have a laugh and not worry that your gonna get the crap beaten out of you! and the staff are really cool!!
  • Tjs is the best place for gigs in port as they often have amazing up and coming bands such as estevez
  • Newport City Live Arena recently opened, using the old Odeon building down on Clarence Place. Super Furry Animals have been, many bigger bands are due to play there.
  • Tjs is the greatest music venue in Wales. Its legendary!!!4m Ghost of Robot to Hole every1 has played here. We,the new bred of sweaties r havin the baddest time and its a gr8 place 2 pull - even if there are sum very dodgy types
  • otts on a tuesday night for metal alterantive music. tjs as well check their website
  • TJs is the best place for this, some place on Stow Hill can't remember the names, Arena has bigger bands... Cardiff - Clwb Ivor Bach (Welsh Club) or Barfly in town put on gigs and can be cool... Bristol - Fleece and Firkin, The Station or Louisiana (note all of above is for punk/metal/indie kinda stuff)
  • TJ's, naturally. Some good gigs on fairly often - you could always check out their site [search for TJ's Newport - I'm not giving the address ;)]
  • TJ's again. (Yeah Kurt did play there and Courtney) Yeah and Le Pub I guess, but its hard walking up those stairs after a few pintsalager. Newport Centre's had some good stuff over the Years, I saw Radiohead there before they made it big. They were supporting James (ha).
  • Newport centre and TJ's. There is alsorts for everyone. The best gigs and the small shows in the Newport Centre, upstairs in the summer! Gr8 Stuff.
  • tjs is the best place in newport!!!! saw finch ther, they rocked! gutted that the gr8 GC cancelled tho! enjoy!
  • Plaqces like O.T.T's and the Riverside have a good variety of local bands playing.
  • Personally I think a quick jaunt up the Motorway to The Bierkeller in Bristol is well worth it ... seen many a great gig in this place and no doubt will see a lot more if what theyve got going on is anything to go by
  • yates's is great place to be any night of the week, great sounds, karaoke competitions, live dj virtually every night and live entertainment. foods good too. open from 11am until very late every day.
  • For live music there's no better places to go other than le pub on a thursday(be prepared to sweat like a bitch!), the riverside on a tuesday/wednesday and tj's through out the week
  • TJ's, Le Pub, OTT's, Riverside Tavern... where should I begin.Le Pub is perfect for chilling out listening to Indie music.Downstairs plays old tunes on the jukebox and has a Sega Megadrive [You can Play Alex Kidd!Or Sonic the Hedgehog!]upstairs however is a sort of dark, windowless little attic with reasonable priced drink,a DJ who hates being asked for requests and friendly [not to mention attractive]barmen. OTT's is great for Salsa dancing/watching the upcoming Newport music scene evolve,as is The Tavern.TJ'S, of course, is legendary.Kurt Cobain went there.Nuff said.
  • Tj's is the only good place, le pub is geting better tho
  • i saw cliff richard in the leisure
  • TJ's - Legendary venue, the atmosphere and sheer good times here make up for the dirtyness and the building itself, which is practically falling apart.. Newport Centre - This is where all the "big" acts perform
  • we are in newport....
  • TJs(the misfits, fugazi, man or astroman, but nothing good for the last few months. le pub & the riverside are good for local bands
  • TJ's, everyone is going on about it but it has got some good history, especially when S*M*A*S*H played back in 96
  • a friend of mine is in a band called Laze and they are playing at Risca rugby club on the 28th october tickets £2.00 not 2 b missed you'll have a brill!!! ? nite in Risca
  • er.... TJ's
  • TJS
  • Le Pub, TJ's, the Leisure Centre, Cardiff
  • TJ's has some good bands on in the week, and Le Pub has bands on a Thursday.
  • tj's is the place to watch up and coming bands....oasis played here although that doesn't say much
  • Tj's mostly though look out for Punk gigs at Le Pub soon. There are gigs in loads of places most nights of the week but winey indie gets on my nerves and thats what most of it seems to be
  • John Frost Square. You are bound to come across the regular busker
  • V3 on Stow Hill is good for live bands. Divine Comedy played there recently and lots of other famous names set to play soon!
  • TJ's is the only place.

Cinemas

  • All Newports Cinemas are the same old corporate picture barns. Try the excellent Arts Centre by the river for art-house film productions.
  • City Cinema, UGC, UCI, and the rest i dunno, go and look!
  • ugc
  • the ugc aent bad.
  • city cinema - NOTE: u have 2 have the smallest legs in npt 2 fit into the seats in scrn 2 - ugc is much better
  • Cinemas - all the standard ones you'll be able to find anyhow... in Cardiff there is also Chapter Arts which shows more obscure stuff and in Bristol there is the Arnolfini and Watershed which also show more obscure/smaller films...
  • Ok gotta support your local cinema wherever you are, its nice to go to the big multiplex, but its part of the worrying trend, to get us out in our cars to do things. Your local cinema will show most of the films that you NEED to see and you'll find its helpfully located near lots of your fave pubs - nuff said. Check out Chapter too in Cardiff, it never fails to provide a good nite, well stocked bar there too Hoegaarden Hmmn lovelly.
  • All slap bang in the middle of townie territory. Moshers watch ur back. Rock on!
  • The ABC cinema in town has re-opened as City Cinema, it has got a kick ass screen (the biggest in wales) and they serve cheap beer, pretty cool 4 a friday night b4 you move onto wherever.
  • If your regular to the cinema the best place to go is th ugc, in newport rital park where there is a mega bowl and for you kids out there a zap zone!only problem is you have to travel outside newport center for it
  • Sorry, I don't condone filling ones mind with fictional material. Just kidding, UGC cinemas is pretty cool. Except for the horrendous prices.
  • ABC is open again and it used to be the best and cheapest and still is pretty good compared o the skanky UCG
  • UGC - Newport retail park.. Also situated near Megabowl (always fun)
  • UGC...NICE
  • The cinema in Newport town centre has opened again - which has meant a price war prices have reduced in the UCI so now it doesnt hurt ur pocket to much when u go!
  • ugc is big but miles out of town, metros is small, but in the town center. it also hosted the pritchard Vs dainton video(and is still standing. just.)
  • There are now two Cinemas in Newport which are well worth visiting. The UGC at Queensway Meadows industrial estate, which has plenty of choice,is one. The other is the Metro Cinema on Bridge Street Newport (formerly the ABC) it has been renovated inside and the main screen has new seating and plenty of leg room. It also still boasts the largest screen in South Wales. A great place to see the latest Blockbuster.
  • just to let you know that the Abc cinema is now reopened as the Metro cinema so that you do not have to go to the virgin metroplex if you do not have to.
  • The Bridge Street Cinema near the bus and train station in Newport is about to re-open (after an extended period of closure) as the METRO cinema- Great! A cinema in town again with a really big main screen and a bar - will they take the plunge and programme some decent movies.
  • ok so the uci is miles out of town and it costs the world to see a movie but iit is kinda trendy. and that whole film tar name on the toilet door. hee hee u do feel a little bit glam, even i have to admit!!!
  • well 2 be honest going to the cinema is a big rip off the only one around is the ucg or whatever its called and a packett of minstrels is £1.90 !!!!! they should open up the abc in town!!!
  • Well we used to have a classy old Odeon at the top end of the main street. it was cheap and brilliant in a kind of run down individual way. put it this way - you never worried about how much you spilt or threw while you were in there with your mates!! But now it's gone and the armies of darkness, led by Richard Branson, are winning in their bid to put a stop to individuality in all small towns - yes you've got it they replaced it with a virgin super deluxe too expensive for words complex out on the retail park.
  • UGC (formaly Virgin)
  • UGC is the only cinema left in Newport alougth the ABC is meant 2 b restarting soon and the UGC is huge loads of screens and huge rooms for parking your ass
  • Shame that one in town closed, I liked it there. There are rumours that the car park in JF square is going to be turned into a cinema though - time will tell...
  • Virgin cinema £5 for adults, mega bowl right next to virgin and a mcdonalds just down the way!
  • The ABC has closed, probably due to the disruptive anti social behaviour of the local community.
  • COme on Everyone know the only cinema worth going to was the Odean in Clarence Place. Now, like most of the good stuff in Newport it's been turned into a shite, Dodgy Snooker club. When are tehy going to put thise excellent old buildings to good use? Lookat the Art college for example..... Anyway, that's another notice board......
  • the multiplex is good, lots of choice
  • Virgin Cinemas. Fantastic. Surrounded by Megabowl, Mccluskies Zapzone Mcdonalds etc
  • Only the Virign cinema these days, the ABC in the town centre has closed down.
  • New Virgin cinema on outskirts by Llanwern steelworks, (very nice), or the ABC in Bridge Street (not bad).
  • the ABC has shut down....erm, just a multiplex outside newport

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Newport. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Newport.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
