Skateboarding Spots

  • skate extreme is awesome and in st julians comp school they have a few good spots a decent bank and some steps. there is lots of waxed curbs and a big square of wax on a bank which is quite cool. there is also a railing you an pull out which is smooth for 50-50's an stuff.also the skaters down there are really friendly.
  • Right. FAO All the people who slag off Sk8 extreme! OK, the ramps are a bit sketchy and the floor certainly aint' smooth, but it just makes you skate better! Get a bit of old skool stylee in :P. No chavs either, unless they skate, cos they dont want to pay. Brilliant repertoire of ramps, death box is nuts. careful of the foam pit mice. no joke. i ride MTB, BMX and i skate, and a good thing to do is take all your gear and pay for the day (7 hours). The guys in the office are safe as, they let you keep your stuff in there if you dont want to leave it in the park and if you ask them nicely they'll let you do some graffiti, as long as it's clean. A bit pricey if your going for a short while so i advise a day trip with about 5 friends (more money spent and the office guys are that bit kinder hehe). Other than the park, check out the schools for steps and banks. I dont advise the streets, real chance of getting knifed or summat. I'm being serious, use the designated stuff if you aren't up to a fight.
  • yeah ive only been skating a few weeks n i was wonderin wheres the best place 4 a beginner? n i live in ringland n milton skool has recently been tarmaced n has gd banks to go trucking an steps 2 ollie off. if you no newhere i thas gd 4 me 2 start off e-mail me an tell me plz splodge197@hotmail.com
  • The Uni up By Ridgeway! NEWPORT!
  • BOATE AENT BAD BUT A BIT SHIT.
  • sk8 extreme is ace. it has all the best ramps in wales. im a beginner and i learned how to drop and go down most of the things there. the death box is good and get loads of air. also ponty pool sk8 park aent bad apart from all the chavs there.but there easily pleased.
  • hey ok, heres how i see it, being as i live in newport i think it's bloody rude how u all says bad stuff about my gd mates, n if your an ollie person go to st julians skwl and go on the tarmaced football, basket ball court etc, want ne more info about newport email me yer euphoricdancingmole@hotmail.com P.S Blads (townies) bite arse, N we dnt jus sit there thnk u very much we have large political disscussions lol very enlightening u shud try it un culutured english pig dogs
  • Newport skate park kicks ass, but as soon as you leave herbert road, good luck to you, me and my mates nearly got knifed and then as we were leavin the "knifers" we almost had the shi*t kicked out of us by loads of townies and smack heads, my advice get a lift there and a lift back
  • Check out the pool in beechwood park. It has loads of ledges to pull tricks on and the pool is good for grinding. Also St. Julians schools car park is good. It has loads of waxed kurbs, benches, gaps and steps.
  • Some people are saying negative things about Newport- well I'm from Gloucester and i can safely say that the hour and a half trip down there was well worth it! It seems some locals are becoming a bit ungrateful and dont respect what they have been given- my suggestion: feed them another outdoor council park! They are the worst; so people who diss huge indoor parks which caters for every sport and ramp....they need a sorting out methinks!
  • st julians school has waxed curbs, flatbanks, gaps and benches also civic cnetre has some good ledges and kerbs
  • Hard 2 sk8 in Npt cos of the bloody townies n coppers but belle vue park is pretty good now cos they've re-newed the paths, not gr8 4 tricks on the hills but cool if u like speed. Also they're renewin the bandstand and me n my m8s managed 2 get a look inside, looks pretty sweet 4 sk8in, nice smooth floor n smooth curbs, the steps r pretty good 2 ollie down 2, cool place 2 hang out 2, not just sk8. pig in newport town is cool, cambrian's alrite but smells of piss and thats all i know. Gaz Clarke
  • THE UNIVERSITY AT NEWPORT ALLT YR YN ITS THE ONE OF THE BEST SKATE SPOTS IN SOUTH WALES FLAT BANCS PLENTY OF STAIRS POLES FOR GRINDING AND PLENTS OF TRANSFERS OF LEDGES TO FLANT BANCS DEFINITLEY A MUST SEE AND AMAZING FOR RIDING DOWN TO NEWPORT TOWN ALL THE WAY DOWN HILL
  • ok Skate extreme IS really sketchy indeed!! The vert is dodgy as are the transitions on nearly all the ramps. The bowl is fast and fun but the coping is set completely wrong which is a real bummer to get used to! Also the floor in their is not smooth and fully rips your skin off!! stay out of the foam pit for your own personal safety and hygine!! Not really good value for money. The cumbrians still standing but sundays the only bust free day , you then have to watch out for smack head tramps who live their WATCH YOUR BAGS be aware of needles lying on the floor you dont wanna catch aids or hepititius . Al-tyr-ine college is well worth the walk but is often a bust so go in small numbers on a sunday you might be lucky enough to get a half hour in!! Ive just built a half pipe in my garden which is rad follow the stickers!!! Also theyve been retarmacing all the hills which are rad and fastso grap a crew and go bomb some hills.
  • st julians high school is rad for skating there is gaps, waxed curbs, steps even daton from dirty sanches has been there. Also skatextreme is brill it opens at 10:00AM be there.EARLY............!
  • Roundabout town and down by the river.
  • there is a new car park at st julians comp (the east entrance, opposite the tennis courts). steps, waxed curbs, benches, ledges. best go outta school hours, as there are less cars, kids etc. Even the 'townies' that go to the school are alright these days, not to mention easily impressed.
  • newport sk8 extreme is the bomb but the vert is shit and the 10 foot quater at the back of the street corse is to mellow the bowl copping sticks out by about 3 miles and if you air off of it you land in sweeden the box is amaizing the beginers street is bollocks the spine mini is the best thing there it is 5.5 foot tall there is a vert wall which is kooshtee the street volcano sucks big gay and needs copping the transitions on all the ramps need to be built the sameas the bowl without the copping sticking out the quarter before the bowl is 6ft and nearly vert its good for lip tricks but is to steep to air or lanch
  • By the statue of the pig.Trust me.
  • There's this old 70's tarmac bowl just b4 u go up Herbert road. It's in the middle of loads houses around it.The surface is very rough, but you can still sk8 on it. Its good 4 airs!REMEMBER it's situated around houses,so respect it and don't take a BIG gang of u.
  • no where its fucking shit
  • skatin in newport is pretty gud, i like the park, not too far away from the train station, its got a nice box 4 50 - 50s, ive bin there once wiv me m8s, sound on the train, give it a go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!mark k
  • too many. ask someone in the shop. DONT go to sk8 extreme.
  • Sk8 extreme's changed. New extension on the vert, NEW BOWL , go down there and watch Matt Soll and nick rip it up. This is 2001.
  • well newport is alright 4 skating but forget skate exterme cos it pretty much sucks :( the ramps have dents in them and the floor is shit!! but the best spots are as follows: 1. round by the pig cos the have luch benches for boardslides and curbs 2. the satue's cos they have drops to ollie on and off. but its shit for grinding 3. cambrian car park its pretty good but watch out for the tramps they r all on heroin and sleep in there, and they can get agresive if u skate there 4. ncp the 6th floor is the best but if its raining then go to the 5th floor they have pletty of bankk and some small curbs - but the problem is that there r loads of gurads, my best advise is just keep skating and then skate off when they threaten to fone the pigs cos they r all fat and they wont cath u 5. gaer skool cos it rules and has load of flower beds fdor transfers and small bench for grinding and loads of other stuff like big drops and stuff 6. st davids skool near the gear, it has a concrete pyramid that u can pull tricks off on, but go there after skool hours (its best to go on a sunday) 7. tesco's and all round good spot 8. the doctors surgary in rogerstone cos it have some big drops and curbs to gring also has a small bank. theres allways loads of road works lying around there like cones and stuff so u can pull off tricks over them thats all from me peace out
  • This is a reply to the review on Newport Skate park, 'Skate Extreme'. as the author of this report is obviously a narrow minded idiot I would like to inform him?her?it? about the vast improvements that 'Skate Extreme' is undergoing! as you said the vert is of good quality and I agree. Obviously this person has not been there recently. A very recent addition to this park has been introduced and is a great success in my eyes. it was featured in the only inlne skating magazine i can 'Unity'. 'Quote', "Wales' finest Skatepark skate extreme has just added a fantasic new feature to their park in the shape of a 5ft deep rectangular bowl. The bowl is 26ft long and 30 ft wide and is situated by the jump box flat bank. It also features various quarter attached to increase your lines into this spectacular new obstacle. Skate Extreme is just gettins better and better......' And I myself cannot agree more. Another thing is, slagging off the Newport skateboaders is not only offensive, i think if they were to catch hold you they'd give you a right kickin wales style! these boarders are the most dedicated and influential group there, even though I am a rollerblader, i will not hear anything bad said of the Newport crew. I get on with them great i agree they just sit there but they are talented and as i said very dedicated to acheving what they want!
  • skating is pretty good in newport. theres the pig where there r benches and curbs and open space. theres the cambrian which is really cool! excellent ground, plenty of stuff 2 ollie over and grind plus its pretty secluded. the ground through newport town is kinda skatable! the law courts rule! loadsa space! brilliant when its abandoned. theres the skate extreme park, which is really cool but i dont have the dosh 2 go there often :(
  • Watch out for the rats that live in the foampit of SK8 Extreme in Newport - they're normally quite chilled, unless you land on them!!!
  • I checked the park out after a tip off and was sorely disappointed, It's got a large area full of potential but that's about the best you can say about it. THe floor is as rough as shit, and all the ramps are bad quality and the roof leaks severely in places. The vert is good quality and the minis are progressive but if its half pipes your after, try and make it up to Manchester. As they said in No War For Heavy Metal - 'Newport's absolute dog shit, but Swansea park's worth a cruise'.
  • Castle Bingo has got a really nice metal bench.
  • sk8 extreme is still the bomb and the improvements over the years mean it is home to an up and coming crowd (apart from most of my friends who have now quit, turned t to drink and become boring gits! - you know who you are!!) skating the law courts seems to be getting easier since they obviously now think that this would be the last place we'd choose to skate - think again suckers coz we're all coming back. The underpasses on the way to the train station are quite good for step work a and your new and don't want well high steps. its also quite a laught to skate thru the shopping centre and watch all the fat security guards try to chase you out the other side!
  • Loads, just go into town, the pig bybthe market, the bus station(far end), any car park on a sunday especially the Cambrian on the middle floor. Newport is just great for skating, it also has a great park wich already has had enough said about it by other people but it is great.
  • Civic center - waxed curbs,flat ground,ledges Cambrian Car park - waxed curbs,foot high walls/ledges,flat ground,3 floors Gaer Junior & Infants school - fibreglass benches(amazing for grinding),picnic tables,steps.walls,ledges,flat ground
  • Jesus, not everyone skates
  • A bit of up to date information about the skatepark for ya: its called skate extreme, got a huge vert ramp, big spined mini,3 spine little minis. A new mini outside. street includes: huge wallride launch box, fun box + lots of stuff to grind! foam bit (which is lots of fun!)
  • Skate Extreme now boasts a newly modified sreet course, new beginers section and plans for an outdoor street course or mini complex. The beginers section has a new transition, a fun box and roll overs. The street course has a foam pit(which is totally rad) a spine and next to the street course is a small spine with 1/4 pipes coming off it.
  • Skate Extreme - a large indoor skatepark with 13ft vert ramp, spined mini ramp and large street area. Herbert Road (off Caerleon Road)
  • there's a skate park and skate shop in Newport, unfortunately, i don't know anything about them, but want to, so please could someone find out about it and add it to this site - cheers, heather.
  • There is a new skate park called skate extreme it's pretty cool.A good street course and three vert ramps
  • Cambrian car park: plenty of waxed curbs about 10' long and various heights. Foot high walls as well. Nose bonk blocks on second fllor and a big platform with a curb leading out which is starting to be used. Westgate Steps (in town): big stepped platform with statues. One, two and three wide steps. Bins plust metal barriers (temporary). Camrian and Westgate are best hook-up spots. John Frost Square: nice slidy benches, big nobbie area to Ollie over, various rund raised bits. Clock you can grind "if you don't mind scraping your face off." Clarence Place: four and ten steps and benches at the wave. Out at Ken Robert's there is a hard to find banked area. Out by the Rising Sun there's a huge bank under a motorway bridge, if you have a broom to clear away the dirt. Out at All-ty-ryn College there is loads of stuff. Go and find out.

Skateboard Shops

  • Freestyle is awesome they have nice decks from just £35! Its a really friendly atmosphere in there and its also 100% skater owned!
  • No quality shops in newport, route one is worth the trip to cardiff though. If your at the Sk8 extreme, the guys in the office know their stuff. Can't do full mechanicals though eg. stripping out bearings but theyve got spanners you can use if you ask nicely.
  • Freestyle i spose, the only one in newport innit, but theirs another in aber, but Cardiff has a few good ones, but since "dirty Sanchez" freestyle asnt been the same, but we still got Ray!
  • ROUTE ONE IS THE BEST THEY HAVE ACE SUFF IN THERE.
  • route one is the shop for me. it sells all the good makes and does nice decks. even now its in cardiff.its worth it.
  • Just mail order from rollersnakes ro route one or sumthin, freestyle is a crap shop full of crappy british makes and no decent boards. also ray is na fat man.
  • pizza hut
  • freestyles got everything you need
  • Cardiff arcades or Bristol to Park Row up that way
  • Freestyle- Pretty hefty on the old wallet, but the shop assistants r cool!
  • Freesyleeeeee!!!
  • one of few next door to renegade
  • freestyle in newport arcade
  • There is only one specialist skate shop in newport to my knowledge.. Freestylers, in that dodgy arcade opposite the market..
  • There is a sk8 shop inside the arcade on the same side as McDonaslds. It's called Freestyle. The place is owned bald guy who's super sound,every1 who works there r helpfull.Go check it out!
  • Freestyle. newport arcade in the high street. surprisingly large, 2 storey shop.got everything you could need & if they havent, they can get it. staffed by people totaly unsuitable for employment anywhere else(Dainton) and a fairly chilled out , friendly place.
  • Freestyle. I love this place. Go in there to buy a setup and ray 'll make sure you get the right one or sit in the big chair and watch videos all day.
  • freestyle is pretty much the only skate shop in newport. they sell cool stuff though. big range of boards, skating shoes and mags, hoodies, etc
  • ok. despite the fact i've visited them many times i just know em by the people who own/frequent them. The one that used to be in the market arcade has moved to# the posh bit by the cambrian centre and lost part of its charm in the process in my opinion. also if you are into b- inliners then theres the skate shop behind the pizza hut - i'm a girl so a bit of a friendly advice - they will patronize you unbelievably. much like the sexist guys who own pro line skates in the Wyndham arcade in Cardiff they seem surprised that girls like aggressive sports. but fair dos they all have a good selction of stuff and are handy if you can't be arsed to trek to cardiff.
  • The one in Newport Arcade
  • FREESTYLE - WICKED!!
  • Freestyle, Market arcade - Cool shop, hasevrything you will want for skateboarding at good prices, 100% skater owned.
  • Argos. You can pick a great one for £9.99
  • Freestyle, Market Arcade,A gerat shop!!!!!!!!!!

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Newport. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Newport.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
