Clubs (Dance Music) and Music Bars
Gatecrasher sucks almost as much as Kingdom, which is actually closing on the 6th january and being completely remodelled into two new clubs. reopening sometime in either april or may. so not only do we get rid of kingdom for good, but we get two for one on the new place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Republic is cool but stay well clear of bankers draft unless u like water and lager mixed together.
The Earl in Heeley holds a monthly night of Fuzzy Duck Productions. It's a night put on by clubbers for clubbers. Aiming at providing people with a friendly atmosphere with funky flashing duck decor and top DJs playing Electro House freestyle.
---> Esp for students
Monday = Corporation for indie/alt rock lovers £1.40 double vodka
= Pubs on Ecclesall Rd /Gatecrasher for dance lovers
Tuesday = Flares/Crystal, The fountain pub in city centre
Wednesday = Kingdom Hallam night £1.60 for double vodka
= Leadmill for indie night
Thursday = Gatecrasher
= V Bar on West St 241 cocktails and £1.50 for pints and bottles
Limit, its just gotta be. Since the closure of Niche, sheffield has gone from bad to worse. The Fuel bar at the side of LImit is really good, its full of fun people who just wanna go out, get pissed, have a dance, maybe cop off if lucky, dance some more, and just have a buzz. Straight scene is shite, all the way from ponds street all the way to the moor. enough said really, its shite!
Kingdom on a wednesday, hallam student night. ok so the place is awful and id rather be anywhere but there on a wednesday but its always busy and drinks are relatively cheap! Buy kingdom tickets from sub aqua! lol
corp. fullstop. hahaha but not on a saturday unless ur goffik.
There's only one place to go on a weekend in sheffield and that's Urban Gorilla! closed at the mo. to find a new venue, but keep yo eyes peeled for flyers and you'll surely have the best night of your life!!
corparation, leadmill, casbah, the nelson are good clubs
rock the "casbarrrr"
Corporatio, just down from devvy green sk8 park. ROCK!!!!
corporation, obviously. I couldn't live without that place. And .zero has a good selection of club nights, from electronica to drum and bass to trance and techno
The charters is a great place for metal and emo music, but its in rotherham, up above the outdoor market
If you like not-so-mainstream indie, then you must check out Offbeat at the tiny Raynor Lounge venue, downstairs at Sheffield Uni' SU, biweekly Fridays during term time. Definitely for connisseurs of leftfield indie, fantastic friendly atmosphere, but get there early cos' it always sells out very quickly.
Element has recently has had a shooting and will be closed to 28 Sept 2004, when they have a hearing.
.Zero on Matilda street is currently the best club in town for proper dance music. Nights include Riddimton - Reggae + Dancehall, Urban Gorilla or UG, every friday, which is the best breakbeat night (although the music policy covers a range now) in the country. Coming soon is Sneak vs Metropolis, starting 25 Sept 2004, and every last saturday of the month, which is Sheffields only drum and bass allnighter (see the events listings)
.Zero is also open till 6am.
corporation on corp street alt music
-> Corporation, just of devonshire green is quality. Four rooms, ranging from dance and hip-hop(check this area out for cool breakdancing, whether you like the music or not its entertaining) To hard rock. Leadmill is cool. CHeck out West street for bars like Cavendish and Varsity. Also backstreet pubs are class too.
Headcharge!!!!!
CLUB WOW AND BRANNIGANS
The Best noght out in sheffield is HEADCHARGE. its on at the arches on the last friday of the month from 11pm. if ur into big beats and many sweaty bodies you'll love it!!!
Tuesday's = Layed @ Bed - if you like funky house or any dance music really you'll love it. Yet to have a bad nite there. Cheap drinks, best atmosphere I've found at any club, any night. Does get very hot in there, and quite a lot of "cool" slightly pretentious types. You go to dance rather than pull. Cheap entry - £3 ish.
no townies or trendies allowed, but if ur looking 4 sum decent alternative music I would say The Corporation on a Monday night, Headcharge at The Arches every two weeks (one hell of a night!) or Planet Zogg, also at The Arches. have fun!
penny farthing...only 15 shillings on a saturday night
The nightlife in Sheffield has fallen to bits, not to put too finer point on it its turned shite. The clubs are packed, hot and expensive where as you used to be able to dance and drink without getting a fag end stuck up your arse or getting molested by fat birds whilst moving about! As for the bars, they've cacked up as well, used to be a good night out up there with the best of them, but now its a right sack of shit. Gatecrasher is about all we've got left unless you wanna get stabbed outside Niche.
The Limit o.k. its been a while.
Insomniacz is the fucking dogs bollox! If anyone had the fortune to visit the Corporation when it used to be on Bank Street near Castle Square when Insomniacz used to be there every sunday morning from 4am - noon, then they'll know what I mean!!!
leadmill still the best place for a friendly mix of people- went to kingdom last time home- never again!! full of blokes with the attitude that groping you is ok- yuk..
wELl theres the corporation (itsa club that has 3 rooms all playin alternative music) An 4 ppl like me who cnt get into the over 18's thers the under 18's corp which is not full of baby moshers...its full of decent ppl mostly at the age of 14 an 15..Come chek it out
Bed, im a big fan of wednesday nights school disco!
barfly, leadmill
FREEDOM ON CHARLES STREET BRAND NEW CLUB WHAT HAS JUST OPENED
march 2002 - dance clubs suck! but well thats just my opinion. the good places to be in sheffield are at sheffield uni on thursday night for the fuzz club, cool indie music & they often have live bands on which is cool. friday nights its corporation (which is currently being held where the Unit used to be (near the forum) until the new venue is ready) it plays a range of alt. music from old punk to metal to indie. or theres always cocktail rockers which plays indie music at the nation pop center. on saturday nights its gotta be step on at the leadmill, indie tunes in a intimate venue, my favourite night out. or theres reservoir rocks at the corporation which is favourite with the rockers. or theres Brighton Beach held on the 1st saturday of every month in the city hall ballroom, its a cool night of old music and indie classics. the only dance type club worth going to is gatecrasher@the republic for the sheer atmosphere and the chance to dress up in bright pink clothes without people looking at you funny! =D
Please include details about Hallamshire Harriers Sheffield established in 1896 and has a web site at www.hhsac.co.uk The club which Sebastian Coe joined when he was a 12 year old schoolboy.
Try The Corperation (milton st - behind the forum, Nr sk8 park):- 3 rooms, Indie, metal, clasic rock, ska, Sk8 punk etc.
A good mix. Nice atmosphere, cheap drinks, cheap entry (try to pick up a flyer for a reduction). Only on on Mondays, Fri + Sat + possibly the odd other weekday (wed?).
the corporation at the Unit. drop on a friday is the best night, and the new venue's not bad either, not a patch on the old corp, obviously, but pretty damn corp-y all the same.
Loads of great clubs. The week nights are the best. Just about everywhere has something on. Kingdom is probablly the best for a good night out on Wednesdays or Mondays. The Leadmill isn't much to look at but 60p a bottle of Carling? My God! Republic is good too. Always a great atmosphere.
The Leadmill is VERY popular on a Saturday night, but you better stick to non-alcoholic drinks, or else you'll get thrown out! JUST by DANCING you can get ejected from this place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The bouncers must be trained at the school of MORMON PLEASURE, because ANYONE CAUGHT WITH ALCOHOL WILL BE EJECTED!!!!!!!!!! THE LEADMILL BOUNCERS ARE NAZIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE lEADMILL IS THE AFGHANISTAN OF SHEFFIELD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Leadmill, great music, great people
Don't think lots of this previous info is very useful as most listings are from way back. Here's a quick update that might help.
The Music Factory alas no longer exists and is now Bed (run by same people as Gatecrasher)
Remedy is now at Po Na Na's on a friday
(The Fez Club is upstairs of Po Na Na's and has a good drum and bass night called Definition)
Gatecrasher hasn't been at the Adelphi for years (Republic for this one)
NY Sushi is at the Unit but is shut for the summer
Another new one is The National Centre for Popular Music Bar which I'm told has some good nights on
Brown Street is new 'trendy' club near The Showroom.
Leadmill
Republic
The Unit-oh the good old days of the skool disco-LETS CAMPAIGN TO BRING IT BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE BIGGEST ROCK NIGHT IN SOUTH YORKSHIRE AND THE NORTH MIDLANDS!

Main event from 10 until 2am. Capacity 1300 plus, tickets can be bought in advance from the box office or just turn up on the nights. See web site, www.sheffieldrocks for full details
Gatecrasher where else
well, the corporation moves for next friday (22nd june 01) to the NMB, let's hope it was worth suffering the awful arches for. like i said, if it ain't broke, don't try and fix it, i'm just praying that the NMB will live up to the bank street venue.....ahhhh, the memories!
Very few places about, but try the CORPORATION. Its moving, summer 2001, but the music and people aren't beaten elsewhere. No townies whatsoever. But, the barstaff can be a bit bitchy. Also, the leadmill is a great venue, but live bands only unless u like 60's/70's/80's on wednesday.
It has to be said that Roxys does attract spotty teenages with designer stubble which is super glued on to their chin after they shave their cats to get it.
Rant : CORPORATION is a blooming RIP-OFF!! SOMEtimes the music is great,[Alt.Indie/Rock]- When the D.J.s can be arsed to actually change the play-list from week-to-week, but charging ver kids £5 to get in, even tho they've been stood in a Q outside in the freezing cold for half an hour, supposedly to get in B4 11pm when the doortax goes up, then fleeceing them via the incredibly grumpy cloakroom 'lady', who insists you cant put a coat in your bag, no no no, that'll be £1 each item cos we so need to rip-off our customers as much as poss.- My point being, Sheffield has long been tragically short of Alt. clubs, and whilst Corporation is maybe better than no club at all [ Except for the CASBAH,which plays good music, but the dancefloor is the size of a postage stamp & it's full of violent townies] But it aint half abusing this 'power', I remember CORPORATION opening and hopes were high, something like a smaller version of the fantastic ROCK CITY, Har Har, but now Corp. is more pricey[!!] yet way inferior to ROCKCITY and it really is a shame. P.S. much of the above list is now outdated, suggest stuff written before 12 months ago needs deleting?
Corporation on Bank Street, has nights for all tastes, but personally Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays are the best with Drop, Loaded, Hardside and Mystery Machine, plays punk/ska/metal/indie etc, its the only club of its type in Sheff, it has a skate ramp indoor and two walls of playstations what more could you ask for???
Orchis is quite good on a Thursday night
Basically charvas then?
I'd like to correct the information about the Roxy nightclub. The building is actually St Thomas' church now and The Roxy is no more!
Regarding all the "townies" -v- "students" noinsense - I think a lot of you have missed the point. "Townie" isnt a term used by students to describe inhabitants of the town in a derogatory manner - I can call a person from MY town a "townie" (and I'm not a student). Townie referrs to a type of person, who can also be a student, who is a type of sports-wearing/fashion victim with unpleasant ideas about anyone who does not conform, who thinks all music starts and ends with the charts and that there are no issues outside of football, sex, pulling and crappy mindnumbing TV programmes with no real content (Big Brother ahoy) There may be a lot of people who like these things. That's fine. But see that there is more to life and that to NOT like these things is fine too. Then you won't get called a "townie". Townie also refers to the habit of hanging around the town centre aimlessly in the manner of 13 year olds standing outside McDonalds and shouting abuse at passers by who have failed to acquire the right tracksuit. For some reason a few of years later these people end up in the Roxy.. They may well be students too...
In my formative years at Sheffield Uni, NY Sushi was the place to go. Moved to Unit, and I've bever been since - the Music Factory had the separate rooms which gave a good mixed atmosphere. I can't comment on Unit, but I'm sure it's pretty good. Any Remedy gig was always a corker. Dr Fonk! The Arches is always one of the friendliest crowds I've met and I like the place, but it's not to everyone's taste. Can't beat a good techno night there. Gatecrasher can be good, can be shite, depends who's on and who's going. Nights like that are always better with a load of friends.
I'd just like to say that the recommendations of clubs to go to in Sheff is severly out of date therefore I would like to compose my own little guide:
YES to monday @ Republic it still rocks, however Berlins and Gossips DO NOT.
Pre club bars to check out are THE FORUM, new late licence till 1am, Thursday is Pulp Funktion the only FUNK/REGGAE night to grace your prescence with.
Anyway on Division St/West St is cool so just crawl up there.
Tuesdays @ the Unit is by far the most comedy night in Sheffield, School Disco involves 3 rooms packed with wanna be Britneys (£1 entry if you wear school uniform) There's cheap beers and some quality tunes in the hip hop room.
Wednesday I would recommend le Citrus @ the CASBAH formerly the WAPENTAKE, no rockers to be seen but a funky underground atmosphere live bands and free citrus fruits!
Friday nights there are only 2 clubs to choose from...NY SUSHI or BED, Sushi fluctuates between AMAZING and PANTS as it has gone v down hill in the past 2 years, Bed is cool, great decor and a mix of tunes, either crazy trance in main room, funky and weird tunes upstairs and sometimes if you're lucky Dropping Science, hip hop in the other room.
Saturdays are dedicated to CRASHER and BED take your pick cos neither of them appeal to me....that's about it enjoy! and check out Sundays @ the Showroom Bar chilled tunes and some cheap drinks!
non/sense!!! (see events bit)
the store
dropping science
go on then........sushi
Please Note: Gatecrasher is held every Saturday night, (and most bank holiday Sunday's), at The Republic. Not the Adelphi as otherwise mentioned.
Don't want confused clubbers turning up there!!!
NYSUSHI is at the Unit, Milton ST every friday.
Music Factory has changed hands (Club Generation) and has now gone into liquidation
just thought i'd mention it
Republic - generally good all the time. Mondays is veeeeery cheap student night. Decent tunes.
Planet on Effingham Road (honestly) is the only permanent gay club in Sheffield. The University of Sheffield runs 'Climax' a monthly gay night
Corporation Rock Night Club (Queen Street)opened a year ago by a 'corporation' of frustrated rockers who were fed up of the non-existence of a decent rock club in Sheffield
Apparently the Roxy is being knocked down - thank god, about time.
NYSUSHI nights at the Music Factory on London Road, most Saturdays.....a must!
hottest ticket in town is ny sushi(love to be closed ages ago)at the music factory also dont be put off by gatecrasher-pumping music, friendly people and the biggest buzz this side of the law--as for the venue well the republic is fantastic watch gc go for global domination
Once a month during university terms is Climax, the only gay bi lesbian club nite worth a darn---at the union of the University of Sheffield...get info from the lbg club at the union.
The Republic (which should be on its way to being EVEN better now that Gatecrasher have bought it...), The Leadmill, Orchis, Unit. I know it's not packed to the rafters yet, but neother was the Republic two years ago...I'd be being right evil if I slated Capitol and Uropa too...
Having worked in the pubs and clubs of Sheffield for over two years, I thought I'd give you the 'inside' view on the best nights out...
Monday:
7:00pm on -- Any Pub in town or on Ecclesall Road especially try the Nursery Tavern, Champs & The Slug & Fiddle. 10:00pm on - Student Night @ Republic Nightclub -- Cheap beer(ish) and a great laugh!! Dress Code: Anything (Literally!!)
Tuesday:
7:00pm on -- Berlins Fun Bar is a real scream when you've had a few, but you better be able to handle the beer cos it's dead cheap and if you're out in a group it's easy to get a bit tipsy!!!!!!! 10:00pm on - The best club on a Tuesday has got to be Uropa for the simple fact that it's right next door to Berlins and the beer is cheap again, with all drinks @ £1.50 you can't fault it!!!! Dress Code: Try to look smart(ish), but it's not the end of the world if you dont. Oh and best not wear trainers they can be fussy sometimes!!
Wednesday:
7:00pm on -- Again, the town centre pubs are all worth a look in, Surrey & Fringe, Yorkshire Grey, Yates's Le Metro.... all of these are good throughout the week. 10:00pm on - Without a doubt, La Videotech @ The Leadmill is the primo night out on a Wednesday. All the best 60s 70s & 80s tunes, and a great atmosphere to boot. A 'must try' kinda night!! Dress Code: Pretty much non-existent!!
Thursday:
7:00pm on -- Berlins again, along with a mini pub crawl beforehand, enjoy the cheap beer again!! 10:00pm on - Basically you have a choice from Club Uropa's 80`s night (cheap) and Republic's 'Disco 2000' (better music). Both have the same style of music but your choice is a trade off between cheaper beer or better music!!!!! Dress Code: Uropa: Smart, no trainers. Republic: Casual.
Friday:
7:00pm on -- Again, the pubs are good, and any of the bars around Division Street are worth a look in, but the Wheelspin in Berlins kicks arse and makes for a great night out. Finish it off by going into Gossips Wine Bar next door B4 11:00 (they shut the doors then) and you can carry on getting the drinks in for another half hour at least (last orders around 11:30). 10-12pm on - On a Friday there are between 16 and 24 clubs open, so there is a really BIG choice. These are my personal top three: Rise @ Leadmill - Premier house night. Real banging tunes with the top DJs in the country, consistently outperforms practically everywhere else in the country for tunes, atmosphere and attitude!! Dress Code: Get your sexiest togs on clubbers!! The Drop @ The City Hall - The best Rock night in the City without a doubt. It has two rooms, Heavy and Alternative, so the choice is there, and has the best rock DJ going with Mutley there every week. Dress Code: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Club Uropa - The best mainstream dance night going, (in my opinion anyway), Dj's Mad Max & Lloyd do justice to a wealth of top tunes and the crowd's pretty sorted too. Dress Code: Smart Jeans or Trousers, no trainers.
Saturday:
7:00pm on -- Try any of the pubs and bars going on in the city centre or ecclesall road and you can't go wrong. The Wheelspin and finishing off at Gossips are just as viable tonight as any!!! 10:00pm on - Yet again you have a big choice, but nothing can beat Gatecrasher @ the Adelphi. This is a brilliant venue, which is being expanded even more, and the DJs are the best in the world. Unbeatable at the price and the atmosphere is excellent. Dress Code: The sexier the better in true club style!!
Sunday:
7:00pm on -- Berlins and Gossips are the nights out on a Sunday, best to start in Berlins and finish in Gossips, but be in Gossips by 10:30 or you'll miss out!!!!
I hope this will have given you some ideas for fun and frolics in Sunny Sheff! I know I miss the nightlife since I'm a student in Manchester, I have to get back as often as possible or else I get withdrawl symptoms!!!
At the Adelphi on Saturday nights there is the BEST hardcore MCs and DJs with residents Paul-o, Topgroove, MCs Natz, JD Walker, Domer and regular appearances by Stu Allen, Dougal and MC ELL. This is the tops!!!!!
You never mentioned that once a year event known as Pyjama Jump (TM) Try contacting the organisors Sheffield Students Charities Appeal for more info at RAG@Sheffield.AC.UK Just for info it's reckoned to be the world's biggest all ticketed party and makes around about 50K for local Sheff charities. Probably the best club night in the world!!!!!!!
For all those people who think that Sheffield is great, but have been feeling frustrated lately by the absence of Trash and the decline of Fridays at the Arches, then let me offer some relief. There is now a new underground Free party, called Sushi, held every few months which provides a return to the heady, fun-filled days of yesteryear. As well as being a rockin' good time, it is also a showcase for local talent, so if you're bored with the dance scene in Sheffield and you reckon you've got a talent then get in touch. We are looking for DJS, rappers, breakdancers, aerosol artists, bands, singers, dwarfs, freaks, anything. E-mail Adil on fra95saa@sheffield.ac.uk
No-one mentioned Capitol, probably just as well, it's full of 14 year old Berlins people.
Meanwhile:
Roxy - horrible townie club. Far too big as well. You'll get split with your mates, and have to wade through over 1000 Sharons and Kevins at lots of townie styled bars, dancefloors and stairs, before finding them again. Purest nightmare! Roxy's is a meat market with overpriced beer!
Everyone's right about Sheffield being the most amazing thing in the universe apart from the tram bridge by Ponds Forge NICHE deserves a mention as a great club still underground but at £5 12am-12pm it's tops, no alcohol but it's not as if anyone notices.
Avoid:
You didn't mention the excelent Cuba nightclub (Rock). The rock night at Cuba's doesn't run anymore [summer 96]. It's temporarily at the NMB for the summer, but will be moviing back to Kiki's (hopefully!!!). Truly is THE best rock night this side of the Hemisphere-and that's no exaggeration. Just try it and you'll be addicted! Also the new Adelphi Rock nights are WELL worth a visit. The Rock scene in Sheffield is truly blossoming again and with such friendly people, it's the North's best kept secret!
Rocky's -- the finest Gay club in the north. On Attercliffe common opposite The Bulldog. Take a 52 bus from town.
Clubs kicked you out at closing time, but you're still buzzing? Then why not try the Niche, Sidney Street, late night house+garage until at least 9am, and then until they get bored. Every Friday, Saturday and sometimes bank holiday Sundays too. Unique laid back atmosphere, unrivalled anywhere in Sheffield.
Casablanca, Devonshire Street - live jazz every Sunday night, traditional cafe decor, serves well after pubs close, no door fee, no dress restrictions, just pop in and chill out! (But be early if you want a seat). Highly recommended.
Float 'n' Funk, Beluga, Mondays - acid jazz and funky vibes in a small, intimate atmosphere, cheap too. Well recommended.
You mention the Leadmill, but not Rise, which is held there every Friday night, attracting top DJs, such as Alistair Whitehead amongst others. Definitely rivals the Music Factory. TOP CITY, I lurve coming home!
There is also the famous "Leadmill", near the station, where you can also catch bands depending on what night you go. Good if you're into intimate venues. On a Wednesday for the '80's night, it can't be beaten with special offers on drinks in the Howard across the road from the train station first. Leadmill rules on Fridays as ever, (after the Arches in my opinion but not many people's). The Leadmill 80's night is always the best.
Trash's popularity at the moment has fallen but it is still a night worth going to. Be as imaginative as you want in your dress sense. Dead friendly and has an up for it atmosphere like no other night I have been to.
Turbulence at Cubas is another storming night, again no dress code but far too infrequent at the last Thursday of every month. Write this night in your diary.
If you don't feel like dressing up at all and still want a banging night than the newly opened Republic night club is the one for you. No dress code as to get away from the Music Factory snobbishness. Not well established yet, but has hosted some excellent nights with good DJs and you can get food in there as well. It has a license up till 4AM every day and the atmosphere is extremely friendly. Well worth checking this place out. Alas, the Republic has now closed [summer '96]. Too far ahead of its time (ie contemporary) for Sheffield. Republic is not shut but should be, it's crap.
A new club called the Adelphi is now open hosting Happy Hardcore on Fridays (rumours of Slipmatt are circulating) and Gatecrasher on Saturdays with every decent house DJ imaginable, you name it, they've played there, Dave Seamen, Jon of the pleased, Jeremy Healy, Tony de Vit etc. quite hard generally, total blow your mind venue.
A far better club is at the Wicker Arches, hosting every Saturday the more underground night called Subway. Top dj's a-plenty, has a wicked chill out room, dress code more lenient, goes on until 6AM and is relatively cheap at eight quid. Subway is no longer at the Arches, however there's now a similar night. Every other Friday at the Arches is "No Logic" hosting DJ's such as Carl Cox and Gayle San in this wicked underground venue. (10 - 6)
Don't listen to the advice about Music Factory being one of the best clubs in Sheffield, cos it isn't. The bouncers are crap (aren't they everywhere but more so here), it has the most picky dress code anywhere I have ever been -- if you don't look right forget it -- and there's the heads stuck too far up their own arses attitude you get from the fellow clubbers. Far too cheasey where the white shirt brigade is in full effect. And for what you get the price is extortionate. And the dj line up isn't that good either. Music is good but the club isn't.
The Drop at the City Hall on Friday nights: this is also Indy and the like, it is bigger but not better than The Music Factory. Besides the beer is shite even for club standards. Whoever said that Drop is not much cop is obviously not thinking straight. Granted the venue is not the most stylish, but it is large and the music more than makes up for it. Where else can you get the best in rock/alternative/indie? In comparison Rock city in Nottingham and Edwards in Birmingham are shit at the weekend, playing outdated rubbish and Slade megamixes (if you don't believe me got to Rock City on a Saturday). Now Rebels is shut, there is only ONE place to go on Fridays! Don't go to the Drop at the City Hall Ballroom on Friday nights without some fags as there's no fag machine.
"The Music Factory" -- now on two entirely seperate floors.
"HQ" Friday nights.
Love to be ...., Music Factory, London Road, every Saturday. Still the best house and garage DJ line up in Sheffield, on the best sound system in Sheffield, in the biggest dance venue in Sheffield, for over a year. Massive queues - you're very unlikely to get in much after 10pm, but well worth the wait. Go to Love to Be if you're a commercialised clubber, if you're a true child of the underground then the Arches is for you. Adelphi is in between with all the best bits of both.
Trash, Kiki's, Charter Row, every other Wednesday, for trannies, glamour girls, and anyone that likes to dress outrageously! Frequented by Jarvis Cocker from Pulp, and a lot of the Forum crowd. DJs Smith, Weston plus name guests. Highly recommended. Trash is no longer at Kiki's, Kiki's is now closed down and replaced with a crappy bar. Trash did have a new night called Pork at Europa but I've just heard it's been thrown out. Who knows where it will go now.
Smokescreen is THE underground party tribe of Sheffield, they have put events on in Kikis, the Music Factory, the Park, the NMB, and Crookesmoor Junior School, to name but a few - plus lots of warehouse parties. The best point of contact if you're new to Sheffield is the Sheffin shop, on Crookes Valley Road. (Or phone 0114 2812051)
Live Music Venues
Sheffield Uni's union is very good on a tuesday night (Tuesday Club) if you're into hip-hop and DnB. Off the top of my head DJ Yoda, The Pharcyde, The Freestylers have played their in the past 3 months.
The Plug is, in my opinion, by far the best club in Sheffield. I have been to see the Cooper Temple Clause, Adam Freeland (on the same night, how amazing is that!) Mr Scruff and De la Soul their.
Also a special mention for Urban Gorilla, a club night held in many venues throughout Sheffield City Centre and book the top names in modern dance music, including James Lavelle and Evil Nine. Enjoy.
Leadmill is best for live bands.
Leadmill or Plug definately

leadmill
The grapes is such a classic venue for gigs
Everyone check out the Boardwalk! And Coporation! Yay!
The Leadmill play some great alternative (metal/emo etc) bands, but if you want the more popular music youd be looking more at Hallam fm arena
I'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but the Grapes pub behind West street lets loads of unsigned alternative acts perform, some are alright, so if you want a gig try there.
soul story
-> Boardwalk on Snig Hill. Cas bah and Fez club near the Moor. Also the Classic rock bar on Ecclesall road. All good venues. But i'd recommend the boardwalk! On the larger scale you got the Hallam FM arena, but its pop so stear clear!
The Fezz Club....
sunday live
The boardwalk is good for live music and for the bigger, and less personal feel, you could see a gig/concert at the Arena.
HALLAM FM ARENA IS WICKED ECSPEC WID CHRISTINA AGUILERA AND BLUE AND ALL THE OLD SINGERS SING HERE AS WELL
The Leadmill, The Boardwalk and occasionally, Corporation
Venues in Sheffield, your joking aren't you mate! Last event we had was the Don Valley Bowl thing and they've torn that fucker up to plant some new Sheffield speciality white elephant on top of it. Nowts been right down there since they shut Pulse & Vogue - top stuff, top light show!!
Leady of course.
In sheff thers well the leadmill, the grapes,The boardwalk,The arena,The corp,The octagon,Then theres loadsa pubs an stuff...theres more i jus cnt remember

DARNALL MUSIC FACTORY
Leadmill obviously they serve up some decent none run of the mill bands, emphasis on band and not the usual same old dance tripe
venues for live music are - the leadmill for regular gigs from famous indie and rock bands - the corporation for rock, metal, punk and ska gigs - and sometimes they have good gigs on at the barfly in the national pop center or at casbah
theres also sheffield arena and the city hall for your cheesy pop type music and gatecrasher often has famous type guest DJs
The Boardwalk (snig hill- west bar). Best live venue in town- small but with a Big history (the Clash's first ever gig, joe cocker, Stranglers etc) Live bands most nights. ckeck it out @ (www.theboardwalklive.co.uk)
leadmill. and the foundry. keep you eyes on the uni's webpage, they usually have some ace bands on.
Ah now the board walk on tuesdays has a unsighned night which is usually worth chacking out, also the broadfield pub on the abbydale road have a tuesday band which is usually really good. The leadmill and New corparation have the big names and it's always worth chacking there websites for news.
The grapes has some alright local bands quite often like NoEyeDeer, Endorfin and Liquid Angel.

boardwalk's quite good for local and semi-famous bands. the foundry rocks, i saw less than jake there last year and it kissed my fase!
The DRONFIELD MUSIC FESTIVAL is quite immense. Loads of bands, on 4th August this year (2001), behind the Coach & Horses, on the footie pitch. This is also the home of Sheffield F.C., world's oldest football club. Get there early, about midday for most fun. V. cheap + go's to charity!!!
THe Board walk has got to be the place outside london inthe UK for great live music. The band is BOY ON A DOLPHIN, why these guys are not a national institution is a mystery
Poptastic is still going strong on the last Friday of the month at the City Hall. Gay, indie mix is pleasantly relaxed. And lots of tables just to sit and talk.

qed give us a decent venue in sheff.!
Two must visits - boardwalk in the town centre (great music pub covering most music forms) and the Pheasant in sheffield Lane top (a sleazy out of town boozer only worth visiting for the qulaity of acts who play there.
BoardWalk Pub - some golden oldies have played there since it was designated a rock pub on Fridays and Saturdays i.e. ian Hunter, Steve Harley, Wishbone Ash
Brighton Beach in the City Hall Ballroom. 1st Saturday of every month. 2-rooms:i)very mod/northern soul/latest in groovy sounds (good for us who like to dance) ii) 60/70`s freekbeat etc... I really can`t begin to say enough good things about this night here!!! Also runs in Leeds, Leister and Nottingham.
The Leadmill. Ahhhh, I remember when I were a lad, eating jacket potatos like small boulders in that pace. It now hosts loads of great live music and bands. And the food's edible now too...
Every Sunday lunctime October-April there is jazz at the Leadmill 12-2pm in convivial surroundings with tables to spread the Sunday newspapers on, room for the kids to run around and good food and drink. Admission is only £2/£1. Details of the gigs are in the Jazz in Sheffield page in the Sheffield city pages. [But] I went along there to find lunch on a Sunday in Decemebr 96 and it was empty with the doors locked up. Not sure if I picked a bad week but it certainly doesn't seem to be doing lunches any more!
Other Music, The Grapes, Trippet Lane
The Arena (01742 797997)
The venue at the Hallam is called the NMB and is situated just outside the rail, coach & bus stations
Student Union venues include:
The Octogon (small and noisy, but good for a rhythm band)
The Foundry (new, cosy, dancy-type place)
The Park (L-shaped, normal Uni-type venue)
Don Valley Stadium
The Leadmill is the best music venue by a mile.
Cinemas
the showroom plays all the oldschool films, like little women. its absolutely fantastic if you like that sorta thing. Also quite good for all you arty types who like foreign films.
showcase- ok- drink beer in there
Best one is the Showroom - great NON-American films!
odeon near tj hughes, vue cinemas at meadowhall, centertainment don valley
UGC at the valley centertainment
VUE in the Oasis at Meadowhall
odeon ugc
You got Centertainment with UGC and places to eat accross from the Hallam arena
Also meadowhall has a few cinemas but dont go there.
UGC CIMEMAS IS WICKED AND DEAD CHEAP MEAOWHALL'S IS BRILL CAUSE U CAN TAKE UR OWN DRINKS IN FROM SUPERDRUG. UGC HAS 20 SCREENS!!!
the best cinema is the ugc out at centertainment. big seats, loadsa leg room and only £3 with a student card.
Odeon in town is cul. UGC a tram's trip away from twon. Warner Village at Meadowhall. Or the best one of all UCI at Crystal Peaks! No w8, no UCI nemore. oh well, the othas r still ok.
It takes me about an hour on public transport to get to a cinema thats half decent, so dont visit tem often.
odeon
ODEON (not too bad, depends what time of day you go, does tend to have a lot of students at peak times, which isn't great, but daytime tends to be quite relaxing).
WARNER BROS (Meadowhall), avoid at all costs during peak times, it's heaving. Good facilities tho
march 2002 - The odeon in sheffield is tiny, scrubby and over priced and on the way out if you arent having a lucky day you're likely to get beaten up by the gangs of lads that hang about outside! then theres the showroom for the arty farty film types, it is nice though. theres also warner village at meadowhall and the big UGC cinema at valley centertainment which are both good cinemas with good special offers on at different times on certain nights
loads of multiplexes all showing the same shinola except for the showroom (nr the train station)which is alternative/ art house + a good bar!
showrooms for all you pretentious wannabe film students.
The Odeon on Tuesdays is £2.50. Nice one.
The Odeon at Arundel Gate. All the now films and not TOO pricy! Great selection of sweets, but very expensive.
The Showroom - good choice of films and comfy seats. Less likely to find annoying people who laugh in the wrong places or who give running commentaries. There's also an international documentary festival there every October which brings in loads of interesting people from arond the world. Nick Broomfield will be there this autumn (2001)
Odeon-only £2.50 for everyone on a tuesday!!!!!!!!!!!!
Odeon
quasar, wow, i haven't been for years but there is one on bankstreet.
Odeon be carefull out side because of the gangs of lads beating anyone
who walks past you.
The Showroom has best films, ie: not just the American fodder.
Meadowhall may be nasty, but the cinema seats are well comfy. The new Virgin complex has the biggest screen in the UK (or something) - it's gigantic. Plus it has those special seats like couches where you can drink alcohol and get free popcorn and stuff.
showroom natch
showroom - opposite the station a classic art house with something for everyone.
The Virgin Megaplex - may sound like something from the Simpsons, but it really is very nice
UCI, if not travel to the showcase at leeds
The truly luxurious Showroom means that Sheffielders can now see Art films in comfort
The Showroom Cinema is an excellent cinema, and to find a better one you'd have to go to London, New York, Los Angeles, or San Francisco! In my opinion, its one of the best cinemas in Britain.
If you fancy a mix of both mainline and minority interest films check out Sheffield University's Film Unit. The cinema is open to both students and the public (via a £1 'joining' fee), and films cost £1.50 or less.
