Clothes Shops, Shoe Shops, Fashion and Bargains

  • Katmandu. Hippie gear piercing etc ,jewellry smellies etc
  • Kathmandu on Hippy Green (Old Eldon Square) sells baggy jeans, cyber goth and lots of alternitive clothing, its good but quite expensive as well. Gets v busy with all the little 'goth' kids spending their pocket money on saterdays tho, before christmas they were making people queue to get into the first shop (there are 2, 2 doors down from each other) altho i haven't seen that since. Flip has also reopened just round the corner from where it was previously but isn't nearly as good as Flip in either Glasgow or Edinburgh with a much smaller selection of clothes.
  • Check Katmandu -it's gr8. The shop's split into two sections, a gothy shop and a more hippyish shop, but both rock. Stock pricey stuff like Raven, but cheaper stuff too, plus gr8 makeup and accessories.
  • check out period clothes for the best in oldie goodie stuff-it really is rock and roll.
  • there's a funky shop called Kathmandu near the old monument and it's gr8 for skater and gothic clothes and jewellery. the good thing is that charvas don't go anywhere near it because there's loads of alternative ppl there who would out-number every charva in newcastle 50 to 1.
  • Maverick nr. the Bigg market for great cool clothes that are too cool to wear unless u r pretentious like me.
  • Katmandu is the best shop for a wide range of clothes from trousers to coats. Pet sounds also sells cool tops and huddies at a good price.
  • H&M is more into the indies and urburn look.Anythink from clothes, underwear, sleep wear to assesories. Decent teen shops are the likes of Piolet, rebel Rebel,International and Quiz. They all have a good selection but the quolity isnt too great.Top Shop is the best when it comes to quolity, quontity and style. The prizes can be a bit pushy but its hard to say no ladies!
  • High Bridge is the place to head, there is a great skatewear shop although I can't remember what it is called. While you are there check out Barbarella and the strange sixties shop (see if you can find it). Personally I tend to stick to the high street brands, if you are like minded go up to the monument, in that area you will find, FCUK, Jigsaw, Monsoon (for the ladies) to name but a few. There are roumours of Harvey Nicks opening a shop up here, watch this space! Then there is Northumberland St. the rents here are the highest in Europe, just one look and you will understand why stores are willing to pay £££'s per square foot, here you will find Fenwicks (classy) and H&M among many others.
  • the amazing 'period clothing warehouse' ***** (or more simply 'the flares shop') there is a cool sixties/seventies place near maverick. fs
  • Flip has now closed down completely. As has the skate shop which used to be opposite
  • Flip, off the Westgate Road, is a decent shop which imports American second-hand clothing. Nothing to do with Flip skateboards and very expensive considering that it's secondhand and most of the stuff cost them almost nowt to buy in. Sells new cargo pants for about £35, in all the nice colours. Also sells own brand t-shirts with logo printed on, buy one and say that it's a rare Flip skateboard tee, impress your gulible friends!
  • Maverick, but it's really meant for posing clubbers who have never even seen a sskateboard, never mind stood on one. A tad pricey for those of us that have relationships with maple, steel and urethane.

Arts, crafts and such (Anything from pukka art galleries to craft shops. Trendy and twee both welcome.)

  • The Baltic is class, seen some great exhibitions there this year.
  • Newcastle Arts Centre, Westgate road, has some cool stuff.
  • Check out the discovery museum- quite hard to find - near ST.James park, and Dance city but often has decent exhibitions and theres always the fun sorta discovery playground, which always has fun games to play.
  • Out of This World in Gosforth is where you will find ethical delights
  • Head for Gosforth near Newcastle for practically anything ethical, fair trade or vegetarian.
  • FAtfield art centre
  • Gemeni's pretty good 4 arts and crafts!
  • Ellula on the street parrallel to the one Pacifics on (i can't remeber the name it runs off Northumberland street next to the Haymarket Metro on the other side of the street, on the corner with KFC) it sells lots of interesting bits and bobs from jewellery to candles and cuddly toys, theres also a luvly cafe downstairs that sells the most gorgeous chocolate cake...mmmmmm
  • Cardbar sells cool cards for all occasions and it is really cool.
  • The Laing Art Gallery is brilliant, with both contemporary and classic art. There are also loads of little galleries around the place, just go and look. Coming soon to Newcastles south bank, is the Baltic art development which when completed will be the UK's largest contemporary arts centre outside of London. Also on the same site will be the (£150m?) regional music centre, a sort of sydney oprah house on acid. This will house the northern symphonia and Folkworks, the national folk music people. Should be Large!
  • there r some pretty good studenty cafe around the central station area. Salsa is a good one and the heaven cafe is worth a look too.

Magazine and Comic Shops

  • FORBIDDEN PLANET - Jesi chrisi...
  • SVEN's adult book Shop looks intriguing, tho i'bve never been in...its near the centre 4 life
  • If the prices in 'Forbidden Planet' put yer off (always above catalougue guide Prices, then try the 'Littlest Book Shop' (run by a decent guy called "Scott") in the 'Antiques Center' (straight opposite Forbidden Planet). [Excellent Prices, good trade, DC, Marvel, etc...]
  • Forbidden Planet, 59 Grainger Street, Newcastle (0191 261 9173) buys and sells comics, graphic novels, vids, horror, sci-fi etc

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Newcastle-upon-Tyne. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
