• Visit the free Discovery museum on Westgate Road Go up and have a look at the Angel of the North, She has a nice firm bottom! Jesmond Dene is a lovely park to stroll around, you can see farm animals there.

• Newcastle aint rough in the slightest, people seem to be bias. So what if people wear there football strips, talk in the broadest accent (geordie is raw english, just like what it used to be like) Appologies to people who were offended in pubs and such like, but not everyone in Newcastle is like that! People are open and friendly, at least they spoke to that individual and not laughed about it behind there back, I don't think you can beat Newcastle as a place, everyone is welcoming where ever you are! And there are a lot of toilets around, you just have to be from Newcastle to know where they are, just because there are no signs pointing them out doesn't mean that they are not there!

• I'm pleased somebody feels safe walking around Newcastle on their own. I don't. I've been sexually assaulted in a pub and had somebody loiter around me, ask me what time it was and then lunge at me. As for geordies being friendly and helpful - when I fainted my friend asked a taxi driver for help -"I'm picking up a fare" he said and no, he didn't help. Thats a friendly geordie for you!

• It appears that some people that have logged their views on this site have not had good experiences in Newcastle. I would like to put the record straight in that these must be one off incidents as I have been going out on the Queyside for years and I have only once seen fighting or even anyone having a cross word. The only thing I would say to an out of towner is , we Gerodies are very proud of our city and it's heritage when you come here just show a bit of respect the place and we will treat you like one of our own, only then will you experience the true Newcastle and the friendly people that live their.
• To the guy who thinks it is the most UNfriendly place - lets look at the facts. A few jokes were made about your accent - Plenty of people (including a southern Harry Enfield) make fun (and money) out of the Geordie accent - do we sulk? no we laugh with them. It is also voted as the favourite accent for call centres year after year with over 40,000 people in the region employed by them. And the gentleman had the preverbial michael taken out of the football team he supported - I wonder the reaction a Magpie supporter would get at...say... Millwall? I suspect it might be worse than a few jokes. So finally if you are that easily offended perhaps you had better stay in your own home, much safer don't you think?
• can we get one thing straight? newcastle is NOT a dangerous city! i'm a 25 year old woman and happily walk around the city centre at night. obviously there are rough areas on the outskirts but as they are residential there is no need to go in them (unless you are unlucky enought to live there) but even then they are not half as bad as areas of manchester, leeds, london, liverpool etc, etc ... chill out, ignore the hype and don't make ant presumptions until you come here for yourself

• The people of Newcastle-upon-Tyne pride themselves on being the self-styled 'Friendliest People in the UK'. This is a falsity. I am from the south, and when I visited Newcastle 5 years ago, I received nothing but grief and mickey-taking because of my accent. I was later accosted by some neanderthal in a pub when he asked me what football team I supported. When I replied, 'Ipswich Town' (my local team), I was subjected to more mockery by him and his 'gang' of half-wits just because I didn't support Newcastle United. I have to say that in my experience, Newcastle-upon-Tyne is the most UNfriendliest place in the UK.
• This is the place where my ex-husband (Colin Jones)went to live leaving his two children and me alone.
• Overall Newcastle is the best place to hang out, shop and have an overall cool day!!!
• You may be amused to know that the local free paper (Herald and Post if you're allowed to mention it) did a front page story about the Knowhere guide entry. You may want to contact them if they didn't do you the courtesy of asking your opinion. They reckon that its totally wrong (the tone is of outraged local pride and is really quite amusing reading), and even got a local councillor to comment! (He thinks that the comments on the site are 'obviously written by people who have never been to Newcastle') But the best bit- GET THIS! They set up a phone-in poll to see whether people agreed with the site or not! There's obviously not enough news...(that they want to report)
• Newcastle is not the biggest place in the North East - it has a population that is about 40,000 lower than its bigger neighbour and a land area significantly lower. The biggest City between Leeds and Edinburgh is SUNDERLAND
• The riots in Elswick and Benwell were in 1991 NOT in the 1980's (I know I was living there at the time). There were NO riots in any part of Newcastle in the 1980's at all.
• The Climate of the North East is little understood by anyone who doens't live there. YES it can get increadinly cold wet and windy, but not normally. The summer gets very hot but we always have plenty of water due to the enormous Kielder reservoir (a good spot for mountain biking and water sports). During the winter it gets colder than the rest of the country due mostly to the fact that we are in a rain shadow, hence no cloud cover resulting in very cold yet crisp, sunny and dry winter days (the best kind).
• Green Festival in May at Leazes park, last year was biggest and best yet, if sun shines this year weel worth checking out, bring dreads and smiles etc.
• right, well.... basically, 4 any fellow chix out there the Warehouse in Durham (10 mins by train from Central Station) is THE place 2 find prospective lovelies (seems 2 b a law that u have 2 have model material 2 skate there) However, try and befriend sum local skate types b4 u go as is v.v. intimidating.... Also, the definite WORST thing about Newcastle is that there are NO TOILETS ANYWHERE. The only possible place is 5 floors up in Fenwicks which is lethal at the best of times, and then when u get there it has a pretentiously named and overly posh Powder Room and a queue of at least 30 incontinent oap's.
• Interesting view = "Warner Brothers Cathedral" only seen from the walkway between the poly and central library.
• *if you see lots of blokes running around in black-and-whited striped shirts: don't be scared! They're no prison inmates but merely enthusiastic United supporters
• The stories of violence that make Newcastle notorious, were by and large a result of some riots in Benwell and Elswick in the 1980's. Since the surveillance cameras have gone up, the west end of the town has been a lot safer, although there has been a lot of joy riding. I lived in Elswick for two years and during my time there, the corner shop got ram-raided. This prompted the the shop owner to put a sign up in the window saying "Please do not ram raid me- I am your Uncle Johnny." It never happened again.

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.
