Best and Worst in Bathgate, Lothian*

Bathgate, Lothian Triumphs and Tragedies

* Important Note: all entries in the Knowhere Guide are the opinions of its users. see What is Knowhere for more info about the Guide.

Favourite Building

  • My favourite building in Bathgate is the Old Academy on Marjoriebanks Street which is now part of the College.
  • Old District Headquarters, shame they moved the HQ to Livingston
  • The Old Bathgate Academy certainly but, in its own way, the former District Library Headquarters in Marjoribanks Street is also very impressive (and it's up for sale!)
  • The Old Academy on Marjoribanks Street, but it could use a serious facelift.

Demolish It Now Building

  • Room at the top
  • DSS in Whitburn Road

The Best Things

  • All the road's out!!!
  • Coming back for around 1 hour
  • Comedian tattoo studio, (Ian &Jim are God's)
  • The absolutely best thing about Bathgate must be Scott. He is a hacker working as doorman at the famous nightclub, Room at the top. He is a really nice guy and a MUST if you ever visit Bathgate!
  • The best thing about living in Bathgate is that it is close to both Edinburgh and Glasgow but it is also in the country so you can escape out of the city when you need to.
  • I've lived here all my life except for approx 4 years, it's home
  • In many respects, Bathgate is still a typical wee Scottish central belt town - too many churches and too many pubs! But it is a neat wee town. The people are sound and there are plenty of nice new housing development. It is also steeped in history - from the likes of Cairnpapple in the Bathgate Hills (burial site of the Beaker people) to more modern signs of religious dissent (Free French cross, sign of the 17th century Covenanter movement, situated not too far from Cairnpapple) to the start of the Industrial Revolution, (old industrial kilns, situated not too far from the site of the old silver mines). The Knock is the tallest hill in the area and, on a clear day, you get a magnificent view of the Firth of Forth and the Ochil Hills. Bathgate is not too far from the countryside and, in general, it's a great place to live.

The Worst Things

  • All the road's in!!!
  • Cats.....cats....cats....and more cats !
  • No decent clubs. Room at the top. The dreadfull.
  • The takeaway shops are too near
  • Has no cinema, unfortunately.

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about Bathgate. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in Bathgate.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
