The Stuff We Can't Fit In Somewhere Else
when i served in the raf at west raynham in the fifties , I ran a radio programme where, mimicing the current bbc style, "we stopped the mighty roar of Fakenham's traffic, buoy" and interviewed local celebs. the pubs were great then too.
Lived here for 6 years and sill an outsider!!
any room for 'oldies' on this site or are you afraid of anything that you may find interesting that publication may alienate you with your peers?
You think Fakenham 'Most boring town in Britain' is a bad place to grow up.
You ought to grow up in a small village 6 miles outside it. Please I beg you -
let teenagers grow up where there is something to do.
For people who live in Fakenham, the nearest place outside of their own home to access the Internet is at e2 Internet in Dereham , Unit 2 Cuthbert Court, Norwich Street, 01362-694545 email:e2internet@hotmail.com
We, the residents of gilberdyke challenge the residents of fakenham to a boring contest. any time, any place anywhere - as long as its not gilberdyke.
Nothing to add except don't under estimate the strength of hangover you can obtain from a night out in Fakenham. As for singles or as I prefer to call it pulling if you look half decent no problem. A change is as good as a rest. Good second time around market particularily from the wine rack factory.
Bridge Street traffic problem has been sorted. Just watch out for people still going the wrong way up the one-way system!
They do say "It allas rean on a Tharsday" (it always rains on a Thursday) every since a Gypsy put a curse on the Market.
Congratulations - this site just got Fakenham onto the telly ! The publicity-seeking Mayor of Fakenham was just on Calendar (Yorkshire TV). He was 'complaining' that this site said that Fakenham was the most boring place in the world - and it wasn't fair that he didn't have the right to reply. With the modern telly journalists usual lack of penetrating getting-to-the-truth, the interviewer DIDN'T say "actually, the site you refer to (and should pay the credit of giving out its URL) is EXACTLY a site where anyone can submit their comments." Anyway, here is the web site that the Mayor was plugging. http://www.fakenham.org.uk/gindex.htm
As a miserable occupant of Fakenham I feel I must let you know that we now have a 24 hour taxi service (courtesy cabs) on Bridge Street and a new Snooker club (Pot Black) on the old Edmundsons site on Oak Street. This is still no reason to come here.
Travel: No rail. Buses run to and from local villages and towns and to and from London (I think twice a day but I'm not sure) You might just get an air taxi at Little Snoring Airfield (no joke) but don't count on it. There is one taxi office in the town so you can get back after a night out if you've drunk too much. For drivers Norfolk Roads are good. Dual Carrigeway is limited though.
Other Shops: A variety of small shops, offering a limited selection. Best service in town is Dugdales on Norwich Road for TV, Radio, and Electrical. Best deals in Norfolk on stuff like that. For a really wide selection of Shops go to Norwich.
Shops: Grocery can be bought from Budgens (town centre) or the Co-op or Safeways on Holt Road. There are lots of smaller grocery shops in the town centre, support these first as then the money stays in the town.
Sport: Town has a sport centre at the Race Course, for Squash, Badminton, Snooker, Pool, etc. Swimming is provided in evening clubs at the Wells Road part of the High School, (you must be a member of the club, casual attendance is not permitted) the nearest public pools are Dereham abd Sheringham Splash. There is a new football complex/stadium being built on the Holt road it should be finished this season (96/97) Rugby is provided by a club on the old cut off bit of the Wells Road.
School: Infant, Middle, High, and VIth form College, all served me OK. Headmaster of the High School and the College is Lee Muston, real cool for a headmaster.
Food Groceries: Bakers, butchers, greengrocers, fishmonger, towncentre supermarket, two supermarkets out of centre and one or two other outlets. Two off licences, one open evenings.
Car stuff: Agents for Rover group, Peugeot and Nissan scattered around, accessory shop in town.
Caravan & Camping Caravan & camping accessories and some spares available out of town centre, gas from same place and also the racecourse caravan site when open.
Fakenham Telecottage (FTS) (01328 851133)
Auctions Every Thursday Junk to 1,000+ antiques.
Market Day Thursday is chaos when the market spreads everywhere.
Other sports: Archery, small bore shooting, tennis, squash, etc?
Racecourse: Several meetings a year.
10 pin bowl In town centre.
Fishing: Sea and rivers all around.
Steam trains: North Norfolk Railway 15m NE. County School 7m S. Bure Valley Railway (narrow guage) 20m SE.
Golf: 9 hole course near Racecourse, several others within 15m.
Naturism: Official naturist beach about 14m NW
Historic Houses Several within 20m
Birds (feathered): Reserves all along the N.Norfolk coast (12-20m N). Wildfowl reserve about 2m S.
Museums: Small Victorian Gas Works and museum of town history and, just out of town centre, Traction Engines and (steam) organs about 7m E. Military vehicles and equipment about 12m NE. Rural Life about 10m S.
The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!
