The Stuff We Can't Fit In Somewhere Else
- PUBLIC TRANSPORT - Buses are good! Regular..and alround a good service!
- cafe up low st was called carioka i think, i was there in 62, bomb shelter behind bus stop dereliction all round ,excitement was a fight on a sat night on the square, oval wed night 2/6 to get in
- Long deceased character missed around Sutton, an old council worker called George. Not the brightest of the bunch, and sadly picked on by a small mindless bunch, but always carried on smiling.
- sutton was better when i was younger but its all going down the drain, theyre knocking all of the old worthwhile buildings down and replacing them with horrible, ugly big buildings that have no use half of the time coz people rent them for a week and then leave and then they end up empty for about a year.
- Sutton??,the centre of ashfield??it might seem insignificant to outsiders but those who remember it from 50yrs ago or so think differently,A thriving coal and hosiery industry, four railway stations (five if you included skegby),a reasonable shopping area, good market and plenty of public houses (pubs).endless bus facilities to mansfield and nottingham, and last but not least some of the prettiest girls in the midlands, and of course theres the "lawn",londoners would have found the local dialect strange but they would have enjoyed the hospitalty of us midland folk, and would have found it a pleasent change to drink a beer that actually tasted like beer ,i wouldnt have swapped sutton for nowhere (knowhere even)
- i've lived all over the world and still come back to sutton - i guess where-ever your roam there's no place like home. and whatever else life has taught me [so far] above all else, its people that matter, and nothing is finer than having the people you love and who love you near.
i've friends from here, there and almost everywhere but no-one compares to the great friends i grew up with, and still love dearly. to all from terry quinby's class of 78, here's looking at you!!!
- LEMO LADS RUN TINGS ROUND THERE AND EVERY ONE KNOWS IT. GHETTO LEMO. NUFF SAID..........
- Why no comment about BMX riders.
- the sutton ninjas are the hardest ninja squad in the world
- Hello to all who went to Quarrdale! Yes I remember the so called fights between Sutton-Centre and Quarrydale. One very nearly did take place as far as I can remember, about 100 quarrydalers met on spider (w)rec(k) but then the police turned up and we all legged it. I can remember everyone denying it in a special assembly which took place the next day.
Oh yeah, Daniel Caunt and his Friday afternoon chair wangling, just after art. If you know Daniel then you know what I'm on about!
- The sun dial wud b a brilliant idea if we knew what the sun was? as i have never seen it?
- No cinema, no bowling place, coppers are too mardy.
Too many people who go to the post office, pick up their giro and spend it on skag.
Way too much rubbish and stuff.
Not enough places to get wrecked.
- i would like to point out that if you come from sutton you can call it all the names under the sun, this site is meant to provide a bit of a laugh, which i personally think it does. Don't take it too seriously, but woe betide any outsiders calling our beloved sutton in ashfield. (you gotta admit its a bit of a dump, but we all love it!!)
- FIGHTS,
if your into public fights then come to sutton in ashfield and c school vs school, sutton centre kids luv to pick fights with quarrydale school, its school vs school, lets go boys, im a sutton centre lad oh yea
- I would like to point out to the person who writes on suuton in ashfield, that i am very disappointed that they felt their home town is some what not worthy of them. I amm 20 and am very thankful for the lessons and people i have met in the town of sutton. I guard it as a very valuable part of my maturing adulthood, and am not ashamed of my 'accent', if we all talked the same it would be a very boring place. I think that this person is being biest and not recognising the good starts that this town offers young people willing to learn. Personally i attended sutton centre community college in the 1990s and am very proud and glad i went there, the teachers meet the students half way on every thing listening to all pupils view wether you be top or bottom of class, no matter what your capability aslong as your willing to learn they are glad to teach. It is true that this town has hit a downer since the closure of the pits and factories but these are an important part of our grand parents and parents upbringing, it is their history and not to be looked down upon as worthless. I personally am glad i have a small town to go back to each weekend after the long tiring week at university. I thank Sutton in Ashfiled for helping me through my teenage years and for allowing me to meet my fiance, i love sutton in ashfield , like they say there is no place like home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Took me til I was 21 to escape. Never live there again.
A dead backwater.
- Some good lookers working at Sutton Leisure Centre.
- Derby & Nottingham Music Hall Association.

8 meetings per year Derby & Sutton in Ashfield.
Connections with British Music Hall Association
and Grand Order of Water Rats.
- Best school is Sutton Centre. Lots of unemployment, mostly due to local pit closures. Pretty Polly tights are based here. This is a really boring place I was born here, I lived here for 18 years, I got out, I was lucky. Enough said.
- Contrary to popular belief, Sutton Centre is totally outshone by the capers and goings on at rival school, Quarrydale Comprehensive, on Stoneyford Road. When I was there, back in the 80s I remember many a pitched battle organised between the warring sides. On the subject of schools, was anyone taking their 'O' levels, CSE's or 16+'s during summer '87, cos a school reunion may be in order for the 10th anniversary of this event during 97? Memories for me include Mr Tatham's eyebrows, Giles Stride picking on Mr Heywood for being so short in front of the whole class, wagging General Studies in 6th form to play pool and drink beer in the Miner's Arms, also in 6th form, Darren Dykes failing his driving test by crashing into a car when pulling out of the test centre, Craig Gittins and co. performing Caravan of Love by the Housemartins at a Christmas Party, German Exchanges in Ahlen, Karen Tabernacle - silly name, rather cute, all the lads fancying Miss Mumby and wanting to appear in the school play 'Bugsy Malone'. I could go on, but won't! Cult celebrity's from Quarrydale Comp. include a few footballers. I understand one ex-pupil is goalkeeper Steve Ogrizovic. Other footballers include another goalkeeper, Andrew Marriott (who I used to sit next to in German lessons) who went on to play for England Schoolboys, and I think is now at Wrexham (but I could be wrong). Wayne Bullymore (who was in my tutor group in "Franklin House", and also went on to the England Schoolboys team and I spotted him playing up front for Barnsley a few seasons ago!
- Arguably the strangest thing about Sutton is the Cryer's Yard Barbers. Inside this establishment, "up t'steps" on Low Street, there takes place a scenario second only to the events portrayed on the X files. Punters take their place in one of the chairs and whatever haircut they ask for, it always looks exactly the same as the last person's. You could ask for a perm with a blue rinse and you'd still get a 'grade two back and sides and a severe trim on top'! Strange but true. And the other thing is the total absence of scissors. They do the complete haircut using only an afro comb and an electric razor. Vidal Sassoon doesn't sleep at night, you know!
- More on the barbers up 'steps in Cryer's Yard - Autumn '98 and Lesh (he of the stoney stare and bone-dry comment) is a proud grandad.
- There are worse places.Where you may ask? Hard to come up with anywhere right now.

The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide.
