Sunderland Gay Scene...Support it. Stay Local
- hylton castle park is where all the charvers go on a weekend wiv their litre of white lightning or pulse or the gud old 2 litre ov bella nd start riots on bunnyhill
- some pure mad people live in sunderland so its a preet cool place to be if they tidyed the shithole up
- SUNDERLAND IS SOILED!
- The local history is great - there is a wealth of heritage in the North (this being defined as North, not midlands or anywhere north of the Watford Gap), people are genuine, for good or bad, with no pretentious rubbish. I love it here
- our friendly gang of youths
- as a native of Sunderland, but having been brought up down south, can someone please tell me why we are called makems
- Just a word of advice... North Sunderland is nearer to Edinburgh than it is to Sunderland. The two are no more linked than Newcastle upon Tyne and Newcastle under Lyme.
- is there sum 1 that lives in sunderland that is calles kyle lex he is 16?
- the best advice i can give about sunderland, is to stay away from it, its full of charvas, doll scum, druggies, thieves, kappa slappers, oh and i would stay away from pallion(its a bit of a dump), and lower ford, yet anoth great council estate in the every so sunny sunderland
- Lewis Carrol lived at Wallsend for several years, and owned a holiday cottage in Hetton-Le-Hole. His famous children's tale was originally to have been called 'Alice In Sunderland', but was altered to the current form by the publishers who had no idea of his affinity for the Wear valley.
- you have to come here to apprecite the culture of the mackem!
- SUNDERLAND was the place that invented the Eccles cake, the Hoover, the PC (by Bill Gates of Ryhope), the labour party (later stolen by tory tony and his crony), glass, coal, ships,
- the transport sucks and nearly every building is delapedated
- My name is pottsy and Im a brilliant person and I love tourists and I am the king of sunderland and the world, YOU ARE THE WEAKEST LINK........CHARA!!!!
- A quite-good brewery (Vaux) shut down here a coupla years ago, leaving no others in the town and little others than the mass-slop fizzo tasteless lowest-common-denominator S+N brewery in the whole region. Goodbye to a fairly distinctive range of local beers. No-one really gave a damn, though, because everybody slaps back lager, lager, lager and anything with the words 'imported', 'expensive' or 'USA' on the bottle. It's sad.
- Sunderland is not in TYNE & WEAR, as there is no such entity as TYNE & WEAR, it vanished as a local government entity several years ago.
Sunderland is just Sunderland.
- The people of sunderland are obsessed with the fact that their 'city' has some 30,000 residents more than Newcastle up the road, which therefore makes it more worthwhile than its more glamourous neighbour. A few points come from this 1) Bombay has a population some 3 times that of Paris or Rome...where would you rather spend a long weekend? 2) Sunderlands population is composed in the main of its sprawling council estates in the North,South and West of the city. Newcastle has Jesmond, Gosforth and the Quayside...where are the exclusive sunderland addresses? 3) When the metro finally reaches your doors and you put the horse and cart away, see how many mackems come to Newcastle for the world renowned nightlife...how many will make the opposite journey? err, thatt'll be NONE!!!
- Far too many charity shops.
The road system into the city centre is frightning, and must put off visitors comming to the centre. Apparently whoever designed the road system lived down South-need I say more
- The get serious comedy club has moved. It is now on every monday night at Bar Modo (used to be masters)at the top of high Street West (near the Empire Theatre). High quality acts every week. Entry is only £2.50 now!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Sunderland is a total dump- I highly recomend living in Wakefield though.. it is lovely there..
- Due to the Great Geordie Properganda machine, many people from outside the north east do not realise that more people live in Sunderland than in N*******e upon Tyne. Sunderland is the largest city in the north east and deserves more national recognition.
- Sid James died on stage at the Sunderland Empire Theatre in 1976, whilst Mick Fleetwood and Sam Fox died on stage at the Brit Awards in 1990.
- I used to at Town End Farm when I was younger. I have lived away from the town for 14 years and my accent is still there, which is unfortunate cos now I live in Gateshead and work in Newcastle. Still Mackem though.
- The people are great really friendly, well most of them anyway! I'm a local and I think the place is getting better all the time. Not all of us hate students I think they become part of the place. Sunderland is much much much mcuh much much much much better than Newcastle!!!
- I've just checked out your mother website at state51. Quite impressed at the music reviews my son. Unfortunately no evidence of your skateboarding roots.
- Sunderland is not friendly, it is filled with vile criminal minded people who would probably mugg their own grandmother if they had half a chance. It is cold, grey and very miserable. I have never experienced so many unpleasent people in one town or so much crime.
- We dont like it, but will defend it to our death if someone from Newcastle tries to mock it.
- We need the Metro to come to Sunderland.
- It's got some bridges, it's got some car parks, a river and a (legal) local radio station. It's Sunderland and it's "beside the sea-side, beside the sea." The North Sea that is, stop making fun we're proud of our raw sewerage!! We've got a Cinema! Okay so it's only got two screens and one of the only holds about 150 people but what do you think we are Eastbourne or something? We have a fair and some amusement arcades (stop yawning).
- The local sport is 'Student Bashing'. It is encouraged right through the schooling. The first thing you are told by the University when you go to Sunderland, is if a local looks at you in a threatening manner, just take out your wallet/purse and beg for mercy, it doesn't matter how old they are, the locals really apreciate the kind gesture and thus only kick you twice instead of placing you in hospital....
- Two cinemas actually. There's the Cannon, with two screens, then there's the Studio that's on the side of The Empire. That's a small one, but it's still a cinema. The Empire itself also has a screen and shows films in holiday times etc.
-

- It has the third best football team in the North East!
- As a Sunderland fan, can I just correct you on a major error on your part. Your assertion that the City's football team are the third best in the north East is I'm afraid not factually correct. The basis of comparative success of all football teams is the number of times that they have been League champions which for your information is as follows:

Sunderland 6 times
Newcastle 4 times
Middlesbrough 0 times
I shall be pleased to receive an unreserved apology from you and correction of your statement on the web as quick as you can.

- Just go see it for yourself but in Oct/Nov Mobray park's illuminations are lovely. If you prefer you can go to Seaburn which is not far away

What is Knowhere?
The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!
In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor
(the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.
We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!
If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.
