Clubs (Dance Music) and Music Bars

  • I always thought that we should reclaim the New Cross Gate toilets (beautiful victorian underground ones in the middle of the road) and turn them into a club, that'd be the shit (that's lingo for really great kids!).
  • Salsa club every Tuesday at the Deptford Live bar. Near to residents of New Cross, Greenwich, Lewisham, Charlton, Blackheath and South East London generally.
  • dont go to the walpole, its rubbish.
  • the numbers are getting smaller - the goldsmths tavern is decidely average, with sports tv in the background when you're skanking, rocking or grooving...HUH!?
  • Hatcham Social Club.BESTEST PLACE. Punk at the x, funk at the x, battle of the bands. Where do i start. Sometimes strict on age but hey.....YOUR PART OF THE BAND.... cough.
  • Venue of course, wouldn't touch it with a big stick. Goldsmiths College Union has some great nights that attract very good djs on Fridays such as the Plumps, Goldie, Adam F, Dj Vadim and Norman Jay plus local Breaks and Drum and Bass Djs. Very cheap drinks and good looking art students, can't beat it. (Wendesday nights are legendary too). Bubblegum on Deptford Broadway is great. Typical New Cross place, very underground nights range from Acid House to cheesy disco to drum and bass.
  • Goldsmith's Tavern - a friend of friend says it reminds him of the bar from Star Wars, but it's still cheap, damned good fun, surprisingly friendly and has some excellent ska on a Friday night.
  • There's the Venue which plays host to all kinds of tribute bands and St*rs In Their Own Arse losers.
  • the jessica thomas club night, offers a range of alternative music - giving competition to all the nu-metal pap that's being churned out of late. tuesday night, goldsmiths tavern, 4 quid in.
  • The Venue - South London's famous little club. If you're into pulling 16 year old girls in mini-skirts, and listening to cover bands play the best of Elton John, The Beatles and maybe if you're lucky the Manics or the Smiths - then you're all set. No trainers, though and expect heavy competition from the lads.

Live Music Venues

  • UPDATE: The basement of the Venue is now having real bands on most Friday nights (i.e. not cover bands), put on by Angular records, Short Skirt Long Jacket (www.shortskirtlongjacket.net) and others.
  • The Montague Arms=10/10! The Amersham Arms. New Cross Inn-but it's no good.
  • The basement of the Venue is now having real bands on most Friday nights (i.e. not cover bands), put on by Angular records and others (update February 2005).
  • the old amersham arms eh? its a really good venue, although they've been getting strict with young patrons of late. they put alot of trendy-core shite on but you get all sorts or rock bands really. the catapult club there on satuday/friday is good.
  • Amersham arms is the best venue in New Cross...A proper irish pub front room with acoustic sounds, and a good sized venue out back, with jazz, comedy, rock/indie to fill it nicely...
  • Hatcham Social Club, again SOOO great. Shimmy on down and mosh, dance and shake your bootie with all the youngsters of the x. Mainly them crazy ol' lot from Askes. And very quickly Punk at the x turns into...drunk, spunk, monk(eys) at the x.
  • Montague Arms. An old coach house on the road towards Peckham is the heart of the New Cross music scene. Local bands like Spektrum and The Violets play here. Full of stuffed animals and weird things its an essential place to visit and always good fun. Late licescence too! Tavern no longer has bands since becoming a wine bar. Really a crime. Amersham Arms is good and Paradise Bar is worth checking out particually Totally Bored nights. Saw British Sea Power and 80s Matchbox B Line disaster play there on the same bill. The Amersham has been known to attract interesting bands such as Oxbow, the Blockheads and Ninja Tune signing Pest.
  • Hatcham Liberal Club near the fire station (check out http://newcrossscene.tripod.com/home.html)
  • Check out the New Cross Inn, fresh hip hop and beats on thursdays and sundays (havent checked out the others yet) nice to find a good atmosphere and music in New Cross - plenty of tidy pieces as well if you know what I mean!
  • The GOLDSMITH'S TAVERN! Some of the best times of my life have happened there. Call that sad? Well, maybe a little but I stand by my comments!!!
  • Goldsmiths tavern is great for alternative bands on Tues and Sat.
  • Go to the Goldsmith's Tavern for a stabbing good time. Or the New Cross Inn does good god awful blues jams.
  • The Venue is the place to see awful cover bands every weekend (ie Tribute Colour Scene, Utter Madness).
  • The Paradise Bar has some good nights on Friday & Saturday
  • The Albany Theatre, Douglas Way: various music events The Bird's Nest Pub has a band most Sundays The Centurian, corner of Deptford High St The Duke, Creek Road Several pubs will be hosting bands at some point during the week.
  • The Venue, 2a Clifton Rise

Cinemas

  • That's in Greenwich.
  • nearest cinema's 20 min walk to Greenwich

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about New Cross. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in New Cross.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
