Clothes Shops, Shoe Shops, Fashion and Bargains

  • Thank God they've shut Miss Selfridge down. But then, the rest are all dire too.
  • "The Old Weaver" in Fishpool Street likes to weave clothes out of the hair of young long haired men. Once, he found this kid called David in the street, and wove his hair into a shirt, without cutting it from the head of David. David still stumbles backwards after Serge, the boy who bought the shirt. His feet are bleeding.
  • THE FLYING DOO DOO IS DEAD!
  • Verulam School PTA run a uniform exchange on the Saturday morning of the first weekend in each term.
  • Officers Club is cheap like the budgie. Conspiracy is cool. Everywhere else is fine if you like to pay £60 for a plain t-shirt
  • yOU CAN GET A SExy JackEt at the FirKiN in St. Albans! Just ask the sexy scottish guy!
  • There is a cool leather/kinky/bondage/fetish shop run by a Mr Brands at Verulam, on Brampton Road. He sells expensive belts, but also chains and gimp suits. Nowadays you get a lot of kids going there, because after the success of Nicky P as Arthur's gimp, everyone in St. Albans wants to be one. There is even a square dedicated to them - Chime Square is renamed Gimp Square for the weekly Gimp Dance. Not to be missed.. wear your kinky clothing, and get on down!
  • All the clothes shops suck, if your a big guy!! my boyfriend cant buy any shoes, or clothes, coz hes tooo big. hes not even fat just really muscly
  • Oxfam, Barnardos, Scope, and all the charity shops are great. Dumb people shop in other shops. No-where to buy decent boots, so you have to nick them from the drunken youth that litter the streets every week..
  • Mothercares shut! damn. still at least fleetville postoffice still sells nurses outfits.
  • I looked all around St. Albans to find just the right size of shorts. But there were none, so I went to cornwall. There weren't any there.. so I went to watford. And spent £40 on some long baggy shorts. Bargain, I reckon! Almost as cool as the Flying Dodo! luv Fido.
  • My favourite clothes shop is TK-MAXX.. it's such fun, especially watching all the whores dancing with poles, and Shaihan jacking off in the corner. They also sell cutlery sets, and things that keep wine cool and bread hot.. useful for Jon the Messiah and his magic tricks. Liz works there too, and her best friend is Becca's sister. And Becca is Jess's twin. And Jess knows Mr Rob. Very well. I also like to go to the Flying Dodo, now that the manager sells cigarettes to little kids.
  • I hate St. Albans, they never have any decent clothes. I hate the most the TK-MAXX, which suckes the most ever. It makes me work up great Plath-like chants of hatred towards it and it's suckness. I despise the sight of it, it's almost as bad as watching The Brink play one of their original sets.
  • Well, Flying Dodo sell most of the clothes I love, such as my "World Industries" Hooded Top, and my big floppy combats. However, they don't sell my ultimate stalker accessory, which is a flight suit. I had to send off for it by male order, but I have it now. I wear it everywhere.. the pub, London, even when I play with 13 year old girls. However, the most fun comes when I wear nothing underneath, for the suit can be easily unzipped by one of the many zips, and my manhood often flops out, much to my amusement and everyone elses surprise. I would wear nothing but my flight suit all the time, but they don't allow them at school. As soon as I get home, however, I strip, and put my flight suit on. I then follow all my current stalking victims.
  • Flying Dodo is good, but the manager nailed my foot to the floor, and now my life solely consists of walking in circles on their floor, laughing until I cry.
  • All my friends hate me because they covet my wonderful wardrobe which comes almost exclusively from Flying dOdO.
  • hmmm i just discovered that the rockit shop sells clothes. doh! i think i must be to ignorant for this town.
  • Oh now heres a great one. Most people tend to shop out of town for this one because for the younger generation we like decent clothes. The Chikin however still lets his mum purchase his clothes so he recomends BHS and C&A.
  • There are lots of shops for young men
  • You can buy stupid looking clothes from the Flying Dodo, such as hooded tops, and stupid combats, which allow you to look like Fido. Whatever you're into, I guess..
  • loads of them conspiracy levis and many many more that i cant think of right now
  • St albans (bricket wood at least) is Englands capital of nudism. Who needs clothes?!
  • No-where in St. Albans sells pants. You won't believe how hard it is to get a decent pair of pants nowadays. There is a little shop next to the Organ Museum which sells good pants, although watch out for the ghastly orange decor! It was run by Mr Pepper last time I was there.
  • Ummm I dont wear clothes from St Albans cos they are designed for Trendies. GO TO CAMDEN!
  • bugger all of any interest unless you have a lot of money and can afford george street prices
  • unless you are rich and can afford shops on "high street" or george street" £8.50 will get you to camden/oxford street
  • Mostly expensive top range designer lables, Copperfield is always good for quality clothing
  • Kishimo - Jin, The END and the Flying Dodo are all excellent and funky clothes shops for girls aged 14+ and they are all in the Maltings. The Flying Dodo is expensive but a nice smile at the manager works wonders.
  • There are loads of trendy clothes shops all over the place. If you want something different go to Rocket in the Village Arcade which is a head shop which also sells quite mad clothing. There is another head shop in the 'in shops' in the Maltings shopping centre.
  • Several Boss/Paul Smith outlets that I really cannot afford to go into. Monsoon for the ladies I suppose. The Saturday market is great for that genuine Eastenders style market-ware. Very stylish.
  • St Albans is full of building societies and fast food shops. No decent clothes apart from Clarkes and the T shirt bit of Our Price.

Arts, crafts and such (Anything from pukka art galleries to craft shops. Trendy and twee both welcome.)

  • graphics plus near the clock tower have some cool stuff. C-R-A is such an enormous shop with barely anything in it - I always leave disappointed.
  • The Big Picture on Chequers Street has some interestin stuff but its not really art for art's sake. Good all the same though, better than Graphics Plus.
  • art and craft shop down london road or victoria road im not sure which one. they run paralell to eachother anyway.
  • Trestle Arts Base - loads of things to do if you're into arty stuff. Will soon have a cool cafe run by Morelli's.....check it out. Theatre, classes, free film showings and DJ workshops coming soon....
  • CRA
  • CRA, when it was where the firkin is now was v. nice. A lovely old lady used to sort me out with all my requirements. Fw to many old people to make this place cool, and art shops always seem a bit like glorified warehouses, but still.... That place on Hatfield road (Coral-by the pet shop) was cool too..I'm gonna go again now I know they sell Skateboards!
  • there is some cute place called pots of art...where little kiddies...or the older child (adults) can paint mugs...plates..things like that just for the fun of it...
  • Cant think of anything in SA itself but Hatfield House has a craft fair every summer which is tres bon for those who love wicker and pot pourri.
  • I'll sell you my hair for thirty eight pounds...meet me at the Nunnery on a cold sunday morning
  • Beaumont Hall Studios can found in Beaumont Hall Lane, off the Redbourn Road (A5183). Tel: 01582 791661 for next event day.
  • Have you heard about Beaumont Hall Studios which claims to be the first interactive art studio in England. It is open every Sunday from 12.00pm - 8.00pm and there are event weekends every 4th Sunday. The next event is on 21 July, refreshments are available. Over 18's only! Try it out!
  • 15 Carlisle Avenue where the boy performs wizardry in the art of origmai.
  • enough multi-stories ripe for work.
  • Wilkinsons is the best provider of any All Purpose Tool you may need, for when you like to open bottles of cheap wine and sherry. safeway is to sell A4 Lined Pad to bring to the pub. Tesco for large bottle of water, or Juice for Nick to Come with.
  • CRA or whatever and loads of little shops scattered randomly
  • Art works in a computer shop, and tempts all comers to buy computers with his vertical beard and 'special' milk.
  • Go to the evil drunk guy in Christopher Place (there's a lot of drunk guys in St. Albans), and then slide a five pound note between his tightly clenched teeth. He'll wink at you, and then lift his shirt, revealing his toned chest. On which is tattoed the location of the hottest Art Gallery in St. Albans.
  • The Art Foundation Department at UH.. hope of some of the most disturbed people ever! Pop in and play with some of the LRC Massive!
  • im gonna make me a multimedia presentation i am.
  • hee hee you don't want to know
  • CRA on Victoria street is very good. Unfortunately it's being closed down but I think it's getting new premises. It sells anything and everything that you might need for all sorts of creative hobbies and arts.
  • not sure oh yeh theres games workshop
  • Upstars in CRA in town the r vpaintings that look remarkable like the ones by bob ross' giude to paint still all good dont let it close.
  • Paul Peppers Wood Carving Shop. It sells wood carvings that resemble American Presedents from 1890 to 1974
  • Cool shop in the Village Arcade (Near the Vintry Pub) called Rocket. Also Tradewinds in the Maltings shopping Centre.
  • "Aladdin's Cave" in the Quadrant - cool craft shop
  • Too many to mention. Every kind of fey crap from aromatherapy to native American wall hangings.

Magazine and Comic Shops

  • The Shoe Shop in Wool Road actually sells Magazine and Comic, despite it's misleading title. They sell ice, ice cream, vanilla ice, movies, porn, coconut ice, ice skates, big bowls of ice, and spare parts. Anyone is welcome, although customers with huge afro wig get immense discount, and people called Max have to do ten push ups before they can come in.
  • Only really good comic shop is Chaos City Comics (have a feeling it may be the only comics shop) but they've gone down in my estimation since I can't get Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stuff there anymore. Not fair.
  • Dave's Comic Shop is always good. Dave is actually Dave Powell, and he has two eyebrows, known as Tom Barnett and Stewart Overton. He'd look damn cool in eyeliner, but mostly he just plays the tambourine and crashes his car. Paul F crashes his car too. And Andrew Howells is in orbit around Simon Wills, after being sucked into his gravitational field.
  • you can buy more magazine from any good newsagent
  • Chaos City comics have moved, next to Games Workshop and Woodstock Records, so all the non-geek people in the world can avoid them all.
  • I get upset when I read of the fate of the comic shop. I cry my lungs out.
  • Yes
  • They sell mens magazines about men in some newsagents
  • Mike the drunk guy used to run a Comic Shop, but in the end he sold all his comics, and bought Gin. He rolls around nowadays.
  • Cahos City next to games workshop which is by clock tower
  • Import Rotation has caused Chaos City to move to Heritage Close, but it sucked after the Andrew Prichard/Swivel Chair incident. Much better to go to the Hive, although that's in Worthing.
  • There is only 1 why u ask. They dont sell studio 54 ndisco supremeo comics ( they do exist)
  • Chaos City Comics in Heritage Close, been a patron of theirs for years, very friendly, and the guys that run it, Rich and Derek, are great blokes.
  • Chaos City Comics is far too X-Men for my liking, and they don't sell JTHM. AND the guy thought I looked like Brian Molko.
  • Stars at the Verulam Estate. There are cool old ladys that let you have 20p worth of penny sweets when really you had 23 sweeties
  • that place in the in-shops that claims to have luke skywalkers trowsers
  • Chaos city Comics owned by the chunky dude Richard Emms

What is Knowhere?

The Knowhere Guide started out as a list of places to skateboard in the UK. It is a compilation of (unedited) information and views supplied by users like yourself. It is not a conventional tourist guide!

In most cases, the information in each section has been submitted by more than one contributor (the credits at the bottom of the page list some, but not all, of the contributors) and some of it dates back to the 1970s.

We make no claims as to the accuracy of the information in the Guide - our only purpose is to provide a forum for users to share their knowledge and opinions. So please keep a large bag of salt handy and be prepared to read between the lines!

If you disagree with a comment, or information is out of date, please submit an update! The contributors come from all walks of life, and their opinions are bound to be subjective, so if your view isn't represented, please speak up and contribute to the balance of the Guide. See below in the 'Have Your Say' section for how to add your voice.

If we have helped you out or made you laugh you can buy us a pint.

Have Your Say...

The Knowhere Guide depends entirely on real users for information. Please feel free to join in.

You can tell us more about St Albans. This is also the method to use if you want to correct some of the information already here. (But please remember you're not mailing the person who actually wrote whatever-it-is.)

You can use the add an event form to tell us about events happening in St Albans.

Or, if you'd just like to leave a message for other users of this site, take a look at The Knowhere Board (handy if you're just trying to get in touch with someone).
